Changes Coming to Disney Parks for Unaccompanied Park Entry

There are changes coming to minimum age requirement for unaccompanied park entry at Disney Parks. Disney is always updating policies and finding new ways to make it safer and fun for everyone of all ages. Well they are at it again and this time it will affect those guest age 14 and under.

Disney is making a change to the age of admission policy for all of its US parks, including all the gated attractions at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort. Locations included are Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Blizzard Beach, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, DisneyQuest, Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure.

Starting March 23 2013, guests under age 14 will need to be accompanied by a guest age 14 or older. Currently, the policy is that guests under 7 years of age must be accompanied by a guest age 14 or older.

My first three trips to Disney were at ages 10, 12, and “just turned” 15. Only during my 3rd trip was I permitted by my parents to visit MK by myself. I feel that 13 would be an appropriate age to allow unaccompanied teens in the parks; however 14 works, as well. One must also remember that parents know what their kids can handle and what they can’t. There are some 16 year olds I wouldn’t want in the parks without adults, while some 12 year olds would be fine on their own. I think parental discretion is important. I do agree with others that if the entry age for unaccompanied kids is raised to 14 that the entry prices reflect that change.

Love your comment…!!! I’ve been several times and we are taking our daughters for the first time in Sept. It makes no sense that 3 of them who are ages 10, 10 and 11 are considered adults.

It makes complete sense to me. We are going in Sept and we said we would allow our oldest daughter, 18, to go with our 13 year old to one of the parks alone… but the other three girls who are 11, 11, and 10 will go with us. I would never consider allowing a 7 year old to go with anybody BUT an adult. But I agree with other comments that they then need to readjust their tickets and dining prices.

Well, I was having this discussion with my husband last week at Sea World in San Antonio. Only in the US are ‘kids’ told they are ‘adults’ at age 10 by amusement parks ~ ticket prices, 12/13 movie theater tickets, age 16 to drive, age 18 to vote, and age 21 to drink! If Disney wants to raise the gate age to 14 then they had better raise the ticket kid price age to 14!!!! and I am a die hard Disney fan. I have 3 DVC owner ships.

Doesn’t quite seem fair. Like I want to pay “adult” rates for my 5 year old that is tall enough to go on Space Mountain. Go ahead and encourage them to charge a hard working family more money. Not all of us was born with a silver spoon in our mouth!

I like the changes, but agree that the ticket prices should be changed to reflect the new rules. I don’t mind unaccompanied kids as long as they behave. On the same token I wish some young adults were accompanied! Some can be very rude and disrespectful to Disney property.

I think the price of admission tickets should be based on height not age. If you can go on every ride then you should pay full price. After all the child is viewing and riding the same rides as the adults are as long as they meet the height requirement regardless of their age.

Yay! I think this is a great idea! I think it should apply to attractions as well as park admission. (Although I’ve been in lines with unaccompanied 14+ year olds who were far worse than many 7 year olds.) I do agree that they need to readdress the ticketing age/price as well. I’ve never understood how a 10 year old is an adult.

Is this just for entry into the parks or for individual rides also? We get a different story almost every time we ride Peter Pan. Our daughter, now age 6, loves to ride with her older brothers, 13 and 11. Depending on the cast member, we sometimes have a very unhappy 6 year old riding with mommy and daddy because “she must ride with someone at least 14 years of age.” If that’s the policy, I’m fine with it and am happy to abide by it. I just wish that Disney would make sure that the CM’s all have the same understanding of the policy and are consistent in enforcing it.

I understand this totally, however, I think if they are changing this age to 14 then they need to change the Disney Adult age to 14 as well. Meaning They CANNOT charge 10 to 13 as an ADULT for tickets, and dining plans and then deny them admission, and the freedom to use their ticket as an “ADULT”!! Sorry you cant have your way and Money too!!

I also think If Disney is changing the ages of unaccompanied Park entry then they cannot legally charge 10 and up as an adult!! So what are they going to do now?

I am appalled that it was 7. Ever. Wow! 14 seems reasonable. But I do like the idea of changing the ticket prices to reflect the change.
