There has been a lot of internet buzz regarding the future of  “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” animated series since Cartoon Network aired the season finale last week. Rumors of the show’s cancellation ran wild while others speculated an announcement from Disney about the move to one of its channels. Today we know that Lucasfilm animation is “moving in another direction.” While not specific, it does sound as if there are no immediate plans to have season six on broadcast television.

We do know that various voice actors as we as supervising director Dave Filoni have gone on record working on season six and beyond. In the video clip below Filoni says, “Even though we are winding things down on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it’s not over yet. In fact the best is yet to come!” This is good news.

Now read the press release from Lucasfilm.

As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come.
As part of this shift, we have also made some key decisions affecting Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Detours.

After five highly successful and critically acclaimed seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, we feel the time has come to wind down the series. While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content. In the video below, Supervising Director Dave Filoni offers a peek of what is to come in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

At Star Wars Celebration VI last year, George Lucas gave fans a glimpse at the animated comedy series Star Wars Detours from Seth Green, Matthew Senreich, and Todd Grimes. Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy, and in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense. As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date.

We are incredibly proud of the teams at Lucasfilm Animation for creating some of the most amazing animation ever produced for TV. Keep checking StarWars.com for new developments on these and future projects.

“Always in motion is the future.” – Yoda

An interesting choice of words in press release to say the least. I believe Disney and Lucasfilm wanted to address the fanbase before it explodes. I suspect that they are planning to launch a new series focusing on original trilogy characters and will find it’s way on Disney XD.  The Clone Wars will definitely not be returning to the Cartoon Network but it also doesn’t mention the fact that the series will appear on any Disney or ABC related network at this time. The key words are “bonus content” which leads me to believe that they are planning to release these episodes as webisodes or streaming content on StarWars.com. Does it mean that they won’t find their way on a ABC/Disney channel down the road? Perhaps. It would depend on how much content they have completed. There is always the possibility for downloadable content, made-for-tv movies, a boxed set of DVD/Blu-ray the possibilities are endless. Perhaps they will have a mini-series announcement during Star Wars Weekends 2013 in a few weeks. That is very exciting stuff indeed!

“Even though we are winding things down on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it’s not over yet. In fact the best is yet to come!” – Dave Filoni

That quote from Filoni made me the happiest. More Star Wars to come is a great thing. I also like the fact that they showed a clip of a future episode. We will all get to see this content and soon. I still contend that they will make an announcement during Star Wars Weekends in a few weeks. You can be sure that I will be there to report on all the happenings regarding The Clone Wars and Detours.

Let me know what you think about these turn of events.
