There are few cartoon characters that come with as much nostalgia as Winnie the Pooh.  Pooh Bear has been adored by children and families everywhere since the 1920s.  Walt Disney Animation Studios has picked up right where Pooh left off – on his quest for honey.  Not much has changed around Hundred Acre Wood.  All of our favorite characters make an appearance in this feature film version.  Pooh’s BFF, Eeyore, has lost his tail.  Christopher Robin along with Pooh and the rest of his stuffed animal buddies decide to hold a contest to see who can find the best replacement tail for Eeyore.  Of course, along the way Pooh is constantly distracted by his incessant hunger for honey.  During their search for Eeyore’s tail, the gang become afraid of a fictional creature called a “Backson” which they think has kidnapped their owner Chistopher Robin, and they devise a plan to trap the Backson thus rescuing Robin.   Winnie the Pooh is full of light-hearted fun and terrific classical characters for the whole family to admire.  It would be really hard to not love Pooh Bear, Piglet, Eeyore, Rabbit, Roo, Kanga, Owl, Tigger, and of course Christopher Robin.  Aside from Robin and Pooh, the characters that get the most screen time in this installment are Eeyore, Tigger and Owl, most of which are some of the most popular Pooh characters anyway.  The filmmakers did a great job at conjuring up some of the nostalgia for those of us that grew up reading “Winnie the Pooh” stories ourselves, while at the same time making a film that had just enough action to entertain a new generation of Pooh lovers.  Also the film comes in at just barely over an hour in length, so it knows when enough is enough, and it should keep your youngsters’ attention.  In case you are wondering, my favorite character in this version of Pooh was Tigger.  He has a shy, dimwitted quality to him that is extremely reminiscent of the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz (1939).  As a matter of fact, Tigger even utters the line “Aw shucks, I’m speechless” during the movie.  I can only assume that this was intentional on the part of the filmmakers as they must have realized how similar the two characters actually are.  Aside from the tremendous childhood charm in Pooh, there is also an amazing soundtrack.  Indie rock group She & Him, which is led by singer and actress Zooey Deschanel ((500) Days of Summer, 2009), recreated the Pooh theme song and also created new classics just for the movie.  There is no doubt that young children will get a lot of enjoyment from seeing their Pooh characters on the big screen, and it will be very easy on the eyes for the parents too because after all, let’s face it, seeing a smile on our little ones’ faces is what it’s all about.
