Wednesday with Walt: What's My Line?

My guess is that most of our Chip & Company readers will not remember original airings of a game show called, “What’s My Line?” Contrary to my soon-to-be- grandmother status, I never saw an original airing of the first episodes either. “What’s my Line?” was a panel game show which originally ran in the U.S. from 1950 to 1967. It has the distinction of being the longest-running game show in the history of prime time network television in the U.S. Some of you might remember the syndicated version which ran from 1968 to 1975; for some of you, today will be your first glimpse of this show.

The rules of the game show were pretty simple. Each week, there was a new mystery guest. There was a panel of celebrities who were blindfolded before the mystery guest arrived and they were tasked with questioning the contestants in order to figure out their occupations, or in the case of a famous “mystery guest” the identity, of the contestant. The panelists had to ask only yes or no questions to probe the mystery guest until they could offer their guess as to the occupation or identity.

On November 11, 1956 there was a very special mystery guest. As you might imagine, his name was Walt Disney.

I was watching this old television clip from his appearance on the show and I just had to share it with you. It reminded me of just how quirky he was; a genuine original to be sure. Be sure to watch it in its entirety as it contains a mini-interview with this great man.

Enjoy!

  1. I agree. The Hollywood of yesteryear was surely a lot better than the Hollywood of today. It was a beautiful event when they held award shows like the Oscars. Thank you for reading and for sharing!

  2. Well, I’m old enough to remember watching this show with my grandparents when it originally ran. The panelists all dressed up, women in evening gowns and hair perfectly done, unlike the sloppy messes many celebs are these days. It was fun to see the audience reaction when the mystery guest arrived!
