Disney’s newest marketing tool is sending out more pin codes. That’s great, right? Well, just be careful. Some of the newest pin codes don’t actually save you any money. Briefly, a pin code is a discount that’s unique to you. When you sign up at the Disney website to get emails from Disney, some of the emails “might” contain a discount code. I say “might” because there doesn’t seem to be any way to ensure you’ll actually get a code.
In our household, Disney loves sending codes to my husband. My husband has never booked a Disney trip or played with the website to get vacation ideas. I haven’t had a pin code in months and I’m on there all the time. Pin codes are generally a better deal than what’s being offered to the general public. This is particularly true with room discounts, which tend to be better.
The latest round of pin codes is called “game on.” It’s essentially like booking at some of the online booking engines where you gamble on the room and it’s non-refundable. Personally, I’m not crazy about that part, but some people love this pin. I’ve heard of people getting one-bedroom villas at Saratoga Springs for $199 a night. That’s a huge savings. The complaints I’ve heard are that some of the pins aren’t actually pins at all. The intent is simply to get you to call Disney and pay rack rate. So just be aware that a pin code that looks like a pin code might not actually save you any money.
How to protect yourself? Well, if you have a travel agent, have him or her take care of it. They should be able to tell right away that it’s not a real pin code. If you’re booking on your own, make sure you run the numbers on the Disney website first to get full rack rate (that is, the price without a discount) before you call. Some cast members won’t understand that this isn’t an actual code.
This isn’t anything new. I’ve had clients email me because they’ve gotten these codes in the past, but I’m hearing more about it lately. Just be a smart consumer and know ahead of time what the full price is and you should be find.
