According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, theaters may be shying away from hosting the latest installment in the Star Wars franchise The Last Jedi which is slated to open nationwide on December 15, 2017.

The piece goes on to explain that the Walt Disney Company is requiring theaters to agree to secret terms in order to run the film which is making some owners nervous about committing to screen The Last Jedi.  The terms include Disney receiving 65% of the revenue from ticket sales (an industry record) as well as requiring the theaters to agree to screen the film in their largest auditoriums for at least a month after it’s release (which is double the usual length stipulated in contracts of this nature).

Should theater chains agree to these terms but fall short of meeting the guidelines set by Disney, the Studio will charge a penalty fee of 5% which would raise their ticket profits to 70%.

Though these terms may not effect cinema juggernauts, the smaller more independent filmhouses will be hardest hit by the revenue split and the loss of space in which to run other popular films during the holiday period.

What impact will this have on moviegoers this Christmas? That remains to be seen.  However, for most cinemas, it is expected to be business as usual.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will open on December 15, 2017. Keep following along with Chip and Co for the latest Star Wars news and updates.
