The Princess and the Frog comes to Disneyworld's Port Orleans

So as the date approaches for the release of The Princess & the Frog on Blu-ray and DVD I can’t help but wonder if we will see Princess Tiana & Prince Naveen making their mark on any Disneyworld Resort. By the way it releases on March 16th if you have not preordered. So with the huge success of the movie earning around 100 Million dollars domestically just in the theater, you have to ask yourself what is next?

Right now Disney has a perfect opportunity to make this movie a classic for all time by incorporating it into one of its Disney World resort, the Port Orleans. Both the Riverside and French Quarter already have a Southern, Louisiana, Mardi Gras type feel with the decorations and such. I am sure it would take minimal effort for the Disney Imagineers to come up with a way to change the decorations to resemble the look and feel of the movie. They are refurbing half of the park already anyway 🙂

I would like to see Disney possibly incorporate a character breakfast at the Boatwright’s Dining Hall. Almost every other resort has some kind of character breakfast. I know my family and I practically live at the Polynesian, Contemporary, and Grand Floridian for the various character meals. Being able to meet Princess Tiana, Prince Naveen, and possible Raymond would be very cool. Also like the other resorts with Character meals you are getting people to venture out of the parks and check out various resorts, buy merchandise, and possibly make reservations for next visits. Isn’t that what you want Disney more sales?

Another cool thing DisneyWorld could do is possibly have a daily or weekly “Mardi Gras” celebration. I know over the summer Disney had the Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee which was great but for some reason they stopped doing it. If Disney was trying to guage attendance and if it would be worthy to have it permantely at the park I think maybe it was a little to soon. I am no numbers expert but I think alot of people who didn’t see the movie in the theaters are just waiting for the DVD/BluRay release. I know we have seen it several times in the theater but our 3 year old is probably the exception since she is a movie buff like her mom and dad. If anyone at Disney is reading this give it another chance! I know our family would love to see the show or participate in a Mardi Gras celebration minus all the drinking and flashing that goes on at the real one.

Whatever the future of Princess and The Frog I hope the creative staff and management at Walt Disney Co are trying to find ways to incorporate Princess Tiana & Prince Naveen into the fabric of the Disney experience. If not here are just a few suggestions 🙂

What are some other ways you could see Disney adding the elements of the movie into Disneyland or DisneyWorld? Let us know in the comment section below.

  1. I actually think P&F will be a Disney classic. It has all the elements plus, if boys can look past the title, it actually has a lot for boys. Tons of a action and adventure plus a little bit of girly stuff thrown in? I think it will do very well. I'm not sure you can base its success entirely on box office figures.

I like the idea of restaurant. I don't know if the location of Port Orleans works simply because it's so far out of the way, but then again people go all the way to Ft. Wilderness to eat at Hoop Do Doo, so maybe it would work. Last time we were in the parks I kept trying to think of where a Tiana attraction would fit in. As far as the theme goes, there's almost nowhere; maybe Hollywood Studios? This is blasphemy, but retheming Splash Mountain (I know, it's so wrong to even consider) to a swamp theme with P&F would be incredible.

  2. If Princess and the Frog is really a Disney classic like say Beauty and the Beast, which only cost 25 million to make, but made 125 million which is in 1991 dollars. Then it must be below that. Then lets say Mulan which made 12o million domesticaly in 1998. So to say that Princess and the Frog is a classic is not accurate. Did it make a profit for Disney? Yes. However will it be remebered as Cinderalla or Sleeping Beauty? No, it is a marginally successful film, that will be forgotten.

  3. I agree. Was just there, and saw many missed opportunities to capitalize on the success and freshness of Tiana and the Frog. I'd say there's a chance to rebrand the hotel sit-down restaurant as Tiana's Palace.

Also, the Riverside restaurant Mardi Grass decorations scared my three year old to the point we ate our meals in the room or off site. Another opportunity to have Mama Odie's Gumbo Hut (or somesuchthing)

They did, however, serve Tiana's famous beignets.

The wonderful thing about The Princess and the Frog is that three year olds are gloriously colorblind and only see a Princess. I do not think that management has yet understood what a major marketing bonanza they have generated. This is obvious by the fact that most Tiana merch was sold out throughout the property.

  4. Not to mention, Chip's figures do not even touch on the “real” profit Disney will see for this movie. Disney is more than likely making a killing via merchandising for the movie and those figures are not included in the movie ticket sales. The other profit Disney will see will start to hit when the movie comes to DVD and Blu-ray. That profit could potentially soar. Box office numbers are not the only numbers that matter, and in some cases Disney cares less about the box office numbers than the ones that really hit home with merchandising and home video sales.

  5. Total US Gross $101,951,400
    International Gross $109,000,000
    Worldwide Gross $210,951,400

I would say that is pretty successful. Not the best for good for not having the Pixar name behind it.

  6. Princess and the Frog was not a a box office success. It did not even make enough to meet its budget of 105 million. Disney made mistake, and needs to return to more traditional features in the future.
