Ten Things Your Travel Agent Wants You to Know

There are a lot of articles out there about things your Disney Travel agent doesn’t want you to know. This is not one of those articles! These are things that your travel agent DOES want you to know:

  1. Good travel agents won’t charge you a dime! If you find a travel agent that wants to charge you fees for booking, making reservations, itineraries, or cancelling reservations, walk away! Make sure you ask if they charge fees before you book with them.
  2. Most Disney travel agents know and are very passionate about Disney Travel. Many of us go multiple times a year.  This means that when you contact a Disney agent, you’re getting someone who can give you pointers you’ve never even considered, who knows the parks like the back of her hand, and who thinks it’s perfectly reasonable to have a packing list made 7-months before you visit.
  3. Don’t feel bad asking questions! We love planning trips and talking Disney so don’t apologize for asking a question. I have received emails starting with “Sorry to bug you…” or “I don’t want to nag…”. Your questions are not nagging or bugging us! This is our job and we enjoy doing it. It’s what we’re here for so ask away!
  4. Please don’t hesitate to ask for quotes and basic information, but remember that until you book, we can’t work up itineraries, advise you on what to pack, or make your dining/fast pass reservations because we have clients who are already booked to attend to. Once you’re a client, we’ll do all of this and more!
  5. Book the room you can afford now, not what you think you can afford six months from now. It’s a lot easier to upgrade prior to travel than downgrade.
  6. If a discount is released after you book, you can still take advantage of it. So long as your travel dates qualify and there is availability, you can take advantage of discounts that are released after you book. Disney will not automatically apply a discount to your reservation-that’s where your agent comes in. We will call and have Disney apply the discount to your reservation and get you those savings.
  7. There’s some flexibility regarding your final payment.  We all know this economy is bad and sometimes people need an extra day or two to pay. We get that. Let us know and we can talk to Disney for you. Don’t feel embarrassed;  it happens all the time.
  8. Wait to buy your airfare. The way Disney offers discounts, there can sometimes be a major difference between checking in one day (the day you just happen to have booked six months ago) and the next day (the day when the discount actually starts). You’re usually safe if you buy airfare under 60 days out.
  9. We will do as much or as little planning as you want. Whether you like to be in control and do all the planning yourself, or you get overwhelmed easily and don’t know where to start, we can help! If you just want us to make your initial booking and leave the rest to you, we can do that! If you want us to help you decide where to stay, where to eat…etc, we can do that too! You are in charge and we will work for you!
  10. Okay, this is self-serving, but here it is: When you book with a Disney travel agent, you help a small business. Disney pays commission to travel agencies. Agents and agency owners split that amount different ways.  Paying that amount to an agency doesn’t raise your price; in other words, it isn’t built into your costs as a hidden fee. You’ll pay the same amount whether you book with a Disney agent, call Disney directly, or book online.  But when you book with us (and by “us” I mean any Disney travel agency), you put that money back into your local economy instead of keeping it at Disney.

I love helping others plan and book their vacations! It makes my day when I’m able to find that discount or reservation that will make my client’s visit extra magical. If you’re interested in using a travel agent or would like some help planning your next Disney vacation, contact me here!

  1. Hi Sara! How lucrative is it to be a Disney Travel Agent (as far as discounts towards a Disney trip)?
