Second and Third Graders From Louisiana Win Disney’s Planet Challenge and Trip to Disneyland

Second and Third Graders From Louisiana Win Disney’s Planet Challenge and Trip to Disneyland

Those second and third graders can’t contain their excitement because they just won the national elementary grand prize in Disney’s Planet Challenge environmental and science competition. They also just found out they’re going to Disneyland and will be the stars of a parade down Main Street, U.S.A. on May 6.

The students from Zachary Elementary School in Louisiana beat out thousands of kids across the United States for their work towards saving the Louisiana coastline and wetlands ecosystem.

With the help of their teachers, Ms. Breigh Rainey and Ms. Kristy Gilpin, the second and third graders built a school nursery, grew hundreds of grass plants and replanted them along the coastal beach area of Grand Isle. The winning students wrote and published books about the Louisiana Wetlands in an effort to educate the community and are donating the money raised from the sale of the books to wetland preservation. The Zachary students also secured a deal with local radio stations to broadcast their Coastal Roots podcast to help spread the word about their conservation efforts.

Here’s a look at how excited the kids were when they learned they won at their school assembly on Friday, April 1.

Disney’s Planet Challenge is the in-school program for Disney’s Friends for Change, an initiative that focuses on inspiring kids and families around the world to take simple steps to help the planet and their communities.

Disney’s Planet Challenge winners were chosen by a judging committee comprised of scientists, environmental experts and educators including representatives from the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and WestEd K-12 Alliance

If you’re a teacher or parent and want to get your kids involved, Disney’s Planet Challenge enrollment for the 2011-2012 school year is open now at http://disney.go.com/planetchallenge.

Disneynature’s plans to work with the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) to “Save the Savanna” have gone viral.

As the April 22 opening of the awe-inspiring “African Cats” approaches, Disneynature is tapping into the true power of social media by building awareness of its “See ‘African Cats,’ Save the Savanna” program. During the film’s opening week (April 22-28), a portion of the proceeds from that week’s ticket sales will be donated to AWF through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund to protect the Amboseli Wildlife Corridor, a passage between the Amboseli, Tsavo West and Chyulu Hills National Parks that is frequently used by lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, giraffes and a host of other animals in the African savanna.

A host of compelling and unique social initiatives allows participants to make a difference, giving them the power to pledge their intent to see the film, support the cause and spread the word to others.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Selected as Host Site for World’s Largest Swimming Lesson

Disneys Typhoon Lagoon Selected as Host Site for Worlds Largest Swimming Lesson

Guests visit Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon for thrills like the Crush ‘n’ Gusher water coaster and Gang Plank Falls.  This June, they’ll hit the water park’s wave pool to help break a world record and spread an important message about teaching children to swim.

“We were honored Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park will once again serve as the official headquarters location for a second record-breaking World’s Largest Swimming Lesson,” said Jean Gallagher, director of water parks for Walt Disney World Resort. “At Walt Disney Parks and Resorts we have a strong commitment to water safety and the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson is a reminder to guests of all ages that when they step in the water we want them to have fun and be safety smart at the same time.”

Last year’s inaugural World’s Largest Swimming Lesson, hosted by Walt Disney World Resort, established the Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson when almost 4,000 participants across 34 states, five countries and three continents participated to build awareness about the vital importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning.

To help spread the message about the importance of learning to swim, the worldwide safety and accessibility team at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has produced a popular DVD, Disney’s Wild About Safety with Timon and Pumbaa: Safety Smart in the Water. In the DVD, Timon and Pumbaa help children learn that fun in the water starts with safety. Hundreds of copies of the DVD were distributed at last year’s event.

Tragically, drowning is the second leading cause of unintended injury related death of children ages 1-14 in the United States. In fact, more than one in four fatal drowning victims is a child under the age of 14.

Research also shows if a child doesn’t learn to swim before the 3rd grade, they likely never will. The threat of childhood drowning is even greater outside the U.S.

Olympic gold medal swimmers Rowdy Gaines and Janet Evans once again serve as official spokespeople for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson. Evans will encourage swimmers at a remote site in California, while Gaines will kick off the event at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon and serve as master of ceremonies.

“I’m thrilled to be working with The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson for the second year to help spread the word that swimming lessons save lives,” said Gaines. “Learning to swim and the exposure to the water safety messages that swimming lessons offer provide a fundamental first step in drowning prevention.”
