The Disney Dining Plan vs. Paying Out Of Pocket

The Disney Dining Plan vs. Paying Out Of Pocket

The answer to that question is quite simple – a resounding and uncompromising IT DEPENDS! Your choice depends on a lot of factors and varies from family to family:

  • Do you eat a lot of sit down meals?
  • Are you “fast food” (counter service) comfortable? – There are a lot of  excellent counter service restaurants at Walt Disney World.
  • Do you like “fine dining”?
  • Are the kids (like most) burger and fries fans?
  • How flexible is your budget?
  • Do you like a cocktail or wine with your meals?

It seems like considering all of these questions would complicate things but it can actually help make the decision for you. There are many options you can choose from but there are also some things to be aware of. Disney considers anyone 10 years old or older to be an adult on the dining plans and everyone staying in your room, 3 years old and older, must be on the same dining plan. Here are options you can choose from along with links to Disney’s sites:

  • The Dining Plans are : Quick Service Dining Plan, the standard Disney Dining Plan, the Deluxe Dining Plan, the Premium Dining Plan, and the Platinum Dining Plan. For those of you who enjoy wine with your meals there is an add on option for the basic and deluxe plans called the Wine and Dine Plan. The prices start at $37.26/adult and $12.77/child per night of your stay for the Quick Service Plan and go up from there.  Here is an  overview of the Disney Dining Plans along with the associated policies. There may or not be one that works for you but at least now you have all of the information in one place.
  • Paying Out Of Pocket - Surprisingly, this can be more economical that the dining plans depending on your family’s dining patterns. Nobody is tied to anything and all of the choices are yours. This can be especially helpful if you have kids in the 3-4 year old range who don’t eat very much and often eat off of Mom or Dad’s plate (Disney is pretty flexible on this practice). At that age they must be on the same dining plan (if you choose that route) as Mom and Dad and often will not eat that much food.
  • Tables In Wonderland – This is the option we almost always choose. In order to be a Tables In Wonderland (TIW) member you have to purchase at least one Annual Passport (AP) which limits you to a “room only” reservation and separate purchase of park tickets. Fear not though, it generally doesn’t cost more for your tickets (except for the AP) than if you purchased a package and AP holders are generally able to get significant room price discounts subject to them being offered (almost always except for peak periods) and somewhat limited availability. Tables In Wonderland discounts combined with AP discounts can be huge. At most table service restaurants, the TIW card entitles you to a 20% discount on your check for up to ten people on the same ticket including alcohol purchases. If you are a sit down type family your savings can be enormous!! A TIW membership costs $75 with an Annual Passport (it is available to Florida residents without an AP for $100).

It will pay for you to do the research and figure out exactly which options are most suitable for your group. Take a little time and use the internet to get the best deal for yourselves. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Disney World Training 101 – Picking the best months to save

Disney World Training 101 Picking the best months to save

This year marks the first year we have decided to get an Annual Pass for Walt Disney World. Most times we go once a year and go all out by getting deluxe dining and a moderate resort. We use up our entire tax check (and then some) to pay for our yearly pilgrimage to the House of Mouse. With the birth of our newest DD (Disney Daughter) we haven’t been able to get to Disney World since Jan of 2010. Probably one of the longest stretches for me being a Florida State resident in years past.

So having not been in so long I felt it was justification for 2 vacations less than 6 months apart (Sept 2011 & Jan 2012). But like most people my wife and I work for a living. Believe it or not but I do Chip and Co for the love of the Disney and don’t really make a ton of money off my banner ads we run. I try to not flood the site with ads like some Disney sites out there and really use them to pay for our server and my other websites I host and run.

So with 2 vacations coming up shortly and a tax check that was not going to cover 3 Annual Passes, Room, and Food. What were we to do?

Our saving grace (which is our newest DD’s middle name) was the bonus paychecks we get.

What Chip you get bonus checks at work?

Not hardly. These bonus checks come on months that have 5 Fridays!

Being the uber nerd I am we have a budget that we try to stick to. Its a neat Google doc and if you have seen my Planning Spreadsheets you can get an idea what our budget looks like.

So on months that we have a bonus paycheck we take a big chunk and make a payment to Disney for our trip. This year we are rolling it in savings till I buy our AP’s and Tables in Wonderland card. In the remaining months of 2011 there are 3 more bonus paycheck months. July, Sept, and December.

My plan is to use our July bonus check to pay for the AP’s. September Bonus will be to pay for our food on our September vacation. Finally the December bonus will be to pay for the food for our January trip since tickets will be covered already.

Not a bad deal.

Looking ahead into 2012 I see March, June, August, and November as bonus months. So between those months we should be able to do it all over again.

Oldies But Goodies – Tables In Wonderland, Does It Fit Your Style.

Oldies But Goodies Tables In Wonderland, Does It Fit Your Style.

Oldies and all other folks put quite a lot of time making decisions about many things before embarking on a Walt Disney World visit. One of these items is dining, after all, everyone has to eat. I’m going to give you some numbers to give you an idea what the Disney Dining Plan (DDP) costs per adult per night so you can compare the benefits of the DDP to the Tables In Wonderland Program.

The DDP includes 1 table service credit, one counter service credit, and one snack credit for approximately $46 per person per night. The Deluxe Dining Plan (DxDP) takes this to 3 table service credits and two snack credits per night and brings the cost to $79 per night.  You may add the Wine and Dine package giving you 1 wine entitlement per night per room for an additional $40 per night. So if you like table service dining and go the whole route, the cost is approximately $99 per person per night (and does not include cocktails). Depending on your dining and beverage preferences this can add up quickly. Please remember that Disney Signature Restaurants require 2 credits per meal.

Enter Tables In Wonderland (TIW) which costs you a total of $100 ($75 if you are an Annual Passholder). What does this get you? You get a full 20% discount on food and beverage (yes alcohol too) purchases in most Disney Table Service Restaurants and many of the lounges. It is also important to note that in resorts with no table service restaurants the TIW discount of 20% also applies at the food courts. You can find a current listing of TIW restaurants here (lounges too). The discounts apply for the TIW card holder and 9 additional people. Technically, there can only be one guest check but you MAY be able to sweet talk your server into two if that’s how it works for you. Another important point, if you use TIW they automatically add an 18% gratuity based on the non discounted price of the meal (not at the food courts) after all, the server and staff have to work just as hard to serve a discounted meal as a discounted meal so in my opinion they should be compensated that way. Dinner Shows are also included but only for the last scheduled show of the day.

If you don’t eat at Signature restaurants and are disciplined enough to stick to only using the allotted dining credits on your visit then the DDP can be very economical. I do not have that kind of self control because there are way too many amazing dining experiences to be had at Walt Disney World. We have used TIW before and will be using it again on our October visit. It offers some distinct advantages that the DDP’s do not have. If you enjoy a cocktail as well as wine with your meals – 20% discount. If you enjoy Signature restaurants there is no penalty (no credits involved) – 20% discount. You are not forced to have extra food that you might not want, you order exactly what you want, no more or no less – 20% discount. I guess the only complaint I hear from people is that you don’t really get a 20% discount but only a 2% discount because of the included tip. I tell those folks that they will likely tip in the 18% range even on the DDP’s because that is the industry standard for the type of excellent service you get at a Disney Restaurant. I hope you find this information helpful and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
