First-Time Experiences at Walt Disney World
Spoiler Alert: If you haven’t enjoyed Splash Mountain and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror yet, don’t read this article! Everyone else, enjoy!
I think we can all agree that the first time we experienced a Disney show, Ride, or Attraction, was the best time! Not knowing what to expect only heightened the fun and made us gasp and giggle at all the right places. We can never get closer to the feelings that the Imagineers wanted to invoke in us than during our first exposure.
I’d like to share with you two such experiences from my Walt Disney World visits.
Example One: The first year my wife and I visited The Magic Kingdom together; one of the first Attractions we wanted to ride was Splash Mountain. I knew quite a bit about the original movie that it was based on, but knew almost nothing about the Ride itself. But I knew the main thing to watch out for – the Drop! But when would it come?
As you probably know, the Imagineers fake you out several times during the Ride with smaller drops. But during our first ride we braced for The Big One each and every time! This added an extra level of suspense to the Ride that is now gone as we ride as experienced Guests. Or is it?
We now enjoy living vicariously through the screams of the many First-timers we ride with. We know what’s coming up, but they don’t!
Example Two: I’m almost embarrassed about this next one! The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is an obvious Screamer of an Attraction. You know going in that you are going to drop many times. But again, as a Newbie, I didn’t know quite when the drop would begin, or how bad it would be. So as I was all caught up in the preamble of the show, we entered the Elevator Shaft. I’m expecting to drop now! Instead, the Ride Vehicle stops, and doors open in front of me (I was sitting in the front row my first time). I now have a nice view of the Hollywood Backlot. I see Herbie the Love Bug, and being a Disney Movie Geek, I turn to my wife to let her know he’s there. My words exactly: “Hey dear, look! It’s Herbie the Lo-aaaaaaaaaaaHHHH!” The Ride chose that moment to plunge me into oblivion. I was not expecting the very thing I came on the Ride for! Those Imagineers faked me out again.

Well, they can’t fool me twice, but they can fool other Newbies. So now I enjoy the Ride almost as much my umpteenth time as I watch and see others sucked in by the Imagineers!
Alert to Spoilers: We all miss our first time experiences. As the years go by, maybe they begin to fade just a little bit. But we can overcome nature’s spoiler alerts (from our memories) by not ruining the experience for others. Let others have those same magic memories by containing your impulse to yell out “Here it comes!” right before a big drop, or “Oh, watch this part!” during a Movie or Disney Show.
That way, we will all have many cherished first-time experiences at Walt Disney World.
P. S. – This goes for those of you who frequent Disneyland too!

Poll: What do you think about Splash Mountains new lap bars?
After being closed for about a month for refurbishment Disney World’s popular ride Splash Mountain opened yesterday with a new safety feature – Lap Bars.
Officials say they hope the feature will prevent people from standing up or getting off the ride while it’s still in operation. Officials also say they don’t expect wait times will be increased..lol right..
Since we have the official word now I want to hear from you. What do you think about the new lap bars? Do you like or dislike the new added safety feature or do you believe it is not necessary?

A Maximum Attraction Minimum Wait Time Magic Kingdom Day
Maximizing attraction time while minimizing wait time at the Magic Kingdom is almost like setting up the Perfect Storm. If you do certain things and do not do other things you may be surprised at the result.
First, the do not’s:
- In general, do not go to the Magic Kingdom (MK) on weekend days. Most visitors arrive at Walt Disney World on Friday or Saturday sometime late in the day. This makes Saturday or Sunday their first full day in the parks and most people head to the MK on their first full day to kick off the magic. Also remember that the local residents also visit on weekends.
- Unless you are a huge fan of evening Extra Magic Hours (EMH) do not go to the MK on a day they are having them. It is far better to go to the MK the day after an evening EMH day, the crowds will be smaller.
- After you get to the end of Main Street USA do not follow the crowd as they head to the right for Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of Tomorrowland. Left to Adventureland is better.
Now for the do’s:
- Do go early. Be there at rope drop even if you go when there is an A.M. EMH. Earlier is always better because when people vacation they like to sleep in a little bit and have a leisurely breakfast. You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish while the masses are finishing their morning coffee.
- Do go left. Resist the temptation to head for Space Mountain. Instead head for the Jungle Cruise. In my experience you can hit the Jungle Cruise, Pirates of the Caribbean, Splash Mountain, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in less than 90 minutes. Walk Ons are always worth it!!
- From this point on, there are going to be a few more people around but if you head for the Haunted Mansion directly after Big Thunder you should only have a short wait.
- After you leave the Haunted Mansion you can pretty much pick up some of the less popular attractions or head towards Fantasyland. One thing you will notice is that as you are heading into Fantasyland the majority of folks are headed in the opposite direction to stand in line for the attractions you walked on earlier. You will also notice that as you head into Tomorrowland the crowds are not quite so bad. You may not walk on but your waits will be shorter.
Of course these ideas are not 100% but in general they have worked very well for us over the years. I have said in the past that I don’t use formal touring plans but I guess if you look closely, this is a touring plan that takes into accoumt more than where to go in the Magic Kingdom but also when to visit the park. Good Luck, and as always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
