Rachel Booth Delivers Record-Setting Performance Again at Disney’s Princess Half Marathon

Rachel Booth Delivers Record Setting Performance Again at Disney’s Princess Half Marathon

Louisiana runner breaks her own event record to become first woman to win an unprecedented four runDisney titles; race weekend total of 36,000 participants is event’s largest ever in five-year history

Rachel Booth etched her name in the runDisney record books – again – by winning Disney’s Princess Half Marathon on Sunday for the second straight time, beating her own race record from a year ago.

Perhaps even more significant, Booth stands alone as the only woman to win four runDisney races – two Princess Half Marathons (2012 and 2013) and two Disneyland Half Marathons (2010 and 2011).

This latest win, a 13.1-mile journey through Epcot and Magic Kingdom on an unseasonably warm February morning at Walt Disney World Resort, was fairly routine. Booth charged to the front of the pack of 26,000 runners at the start and was never seriously threatened, even though she could hear the cheers for second-place finisher Mia Elbon and third-place finisher Megan Jaswell behind her.

Taking the Plunge…RunDisney!

Taking the Plunge...RunDisney!

If you decided to read on, perhaps you’ve been intrigued by the hype surrounding RunDisney.  Maybe you’ve seen ads, emails, photos, and videos promoting RunDisney events and in the back of your mind, you’ve always said, “maybe one day!”.  Maybe you’ve thought that for like about 5 seconds before you come to your senses and start listing of an arsenal of reasons why you (of all people) have no business running, period.  Today I am here to help you stop that negative self talk and redirect your negative thoughts into positive realities.

About a year ago, I did just that!  I put that negative talk to the side and committed to running the Princess Half Marathon.  With 13.1 miles staring me in the face, my first step was to sign up.  I knew that once I committed my money, my dedication would follow.  That was seriously the best choice I could have made.  I was that girl who always joked when I saw people running on the side of the road; “the only way I would be able to run is if someone chased after me with a knife!”.  But, then I learned a little something about myself (that I think is true for everyone)…  what is to be is up to me!  In terms of training and running, I pushed myself like never before.  It was hard!  I am not going to kid you.  But, it was SO worth it. Not only for the satisfaction of completing a RunDisney event, but more so, for just showing myself that I can take on a challenge and succeed.  I am officially addicted to RunDisney!  Running is all about putting one foot in front of the other.  That is how I thought of the process; each action was a next step!  I think you (insert your name here…yes, especially YOU) should take the plunge and RUN…Disney!

If you have been thinking about signing up for a race, take a look at my list of 5 pro’s to signing up for a RunDisney event!  These will help you combat all those cons I know you’ve cooked up!

Runners nationwide have their first chance today to go after a commemorative new medal that will be awarded to finishers of the 2013 Disney’s Princess Half Marathon.

Registration for the race weekend opens today and all finishers will receive a one-of-a-kind medal to mark the fifth anniversary of the women-focused event at Walt Disney World Resort, Feb. 22-24, 2013. Runners can sign up for the race at www.rundisney.com and the commemorative tiara medal will be revealed in the coming months.

Disney’s Princess Marathon Weekend is one of the largest women-specific running events in the country and focuses on healthy active lifestyles for women and girls.  After nearly 7,500 runners ran in the inaugural 2009 event, the popularity of the race has grown considerably with more than 19,000 competing in last year’s race. This year, the event is expected to attract more than 20,000 runners.

The weekend event includes the Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Royal Family 5K and Kids’ Races on Saturday, followed by half marathon on Sunday.  The weekend also includes the Disney Fit for a Princess Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, featuring the latest running apparel and equipment, as well as a speaker series involving running experts such as official runDisney training consultant Jeff Galloway.

Disney’s Princess Half Marathon is one of two women-focused runDisney event weekends.  The Tinker Bell Half Marathon takes place in January at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Ca.

The race started, as always, WITH A 2012 Princess Half Marathon Royal Family 5K race review!!BANG!

We just happened to be in a GREAT SPOT as all the runners were coming PAST us! So I was holding up this sign as 5000 runners came past! And there were a ton of them! All in great costumes and many pushing strollers.

This year’s race was hosted by Rapunzel and Flynn Rider and, my husband tells me, began with Flynn riding MAXIMUS! Very cool!2012 Princess Half Marathon Royal Family 5K race review!!

Along the race route characters are stationed for runners to take pictures with and my husband tells me this year had Shang and Mulan together as well as other “sweethearts”.

As we waited at the finish line for the first finisher to cross 1000s of friends and family members cheered from the stands and the announcers kept us posted on where the lead runners were in the park.

2012 Princess Half Marathon Royal Family 5K race review!!Finally we had our winner, a male, finishing in 17:14.

I kind of felt sorry for him to be honest because the weekend is so heavily women-centered the announcers almost seemed irritated that it was a male and not a female crossing the line first. Especially when he was a full minute faster than the second place runner.

But I did think it was interesting that they noted that the first finisher and the last finisher ALL get the same race medal.

Not long after we had our first female to cross the finish line and they made a celebration of it!

Both the second and third place females also got a big round of applause

As I was taking a random picture of people crossing the finish like I realize.

THAT’S MY SON!!

2012 Princess Half Marathon Royal Family 5K race review!!

This is made even more amazing by the fact that it is STILL UNDER THE 30 MINUTE MARK!!!!

AND that means he is running sub-10 minute miles in a huge crowd. Pretty impressive for a 9 year old. Wouldn’t you say?2012 Princess Half Marathon Royal Family 5K race review!!

And then I got REALLY EXCITED because they announced about 30 seconds LATER that JEFF GALLOWAY, official run Disney marathon training consultant, was just crossing the finish line.
