castle 525x349 New Disney World Resort Discounts are Out! %tag

The latest Walt Disney World  resort discounts are out for travel from January 2, 2011 through April 16, 2011.  Both general public and annual passholder discounts were released yesterday. They are as follows:

Room-only offer for the general public:

Save 20% at Disney Value Resorts and Animal Kingdom Lodge if booked by 12/31/10. You can still save 15%  if you book between 1/1/11-2/13/11.

Save 25% at Disney Moderate Resorts and Polynesian Resort if booked by 12/31/10.  Book between 1/1/11-2/13/11 and save 20%.

Save 35% at the remaining Disney Deluxe Resorts if booked by 12/31/10,.  If you book between 1/1/11-2/13/11, you’ll save 30%.

Save 35% at Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts if booked by 12/31/10.  You’ll save 30% if you book between 1/1/11-2/13/11.

 Annual Passholders Discounts:

Save 32% at Disney Value Resorts, Animal Kingdom Lodge and Polynesian Resort.

Save 35% at Disney Moderate Resorts.

Save 42% at the remaining Disney Deluxe Resorts.

Save 42% at Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts.

Keep in mind that there are some black-out dates for travel during this period. From what I’ve seen, the annual pass discount has fewer black out dates.  Check with your travel agent for more information. These rates will go fast, so book as soon as possible.  Since free dining is running during the same time, make sure you ask to have both a free dining package and a room discount run see which is a better deal for you and your party.  Depending on how you vacation, how many people are in your party, and where you plan on staying, it can make a big difference.

Ask a Disney Question: Can I get free dining after I’ve already booked?

disney dining Ask a Disney Question: Can I get free dining after Ive already booked? %tag

This question comes to us from Joan, who asks:  “I booked a trip for December through AAA with the dining plan for three meals a day . Please tell me this would be free.  Thanks.”

Joan.  Thanks for reading Chip and Co and for your question.   Free dining has not been announced yet for December.  We don’t actually know if it will be, but the rumor is pretty persistent and from some good sources, so I’m thinking it might happen.  We’ll announced it here as soon as we find out any information.

A good Disney certified travel agent will keep up with discounts as they come out and notify her clients.  The only problem with this is that sometimes there can be a delay in agents getting the information. This delay can take up to 3 – 5 days because of the way Disney makes this information available to their agents, which can mean that the agents who have better connections (or who are searching Internet forums for information) are getting their clients free dining while other agents aren’t even aware that it exists.   By the time an agent who isn’t “in the know” gets the information, there’s no more availability.  I’ve had this happen myself and ended up informing my agent that the discount was out there; he had no idea.

I mention this because you may also want to do some searching yourself.  I’ve found that the posters on Passporter and Disboards are pretty savvy.  If there’s a discount out there, they usually know the moment it’s been announced.  Keep up with those forums and check out Mousesavers, which has historical data on when discounts are released.

If free dining is announced, call your agent and have him change your reservation to include dining, if there’s availability.   If this seems like more work than you want to do and you have faith in your travel agent, simply wait for him to inform you if free dining has been announced.  You may want to send him an email expressing your interest so that he knows to keep you in mind if something comes up.  By the way, you can do this with any discount, so if something better comes out, have him apply that instead.

One small but very important caveat:  You’re only allowed to have one discount at a time, so if your AAA agent already booked your trip with a discount  (say, a percentage off the room), you’ll need to have him switch that discount to free dining.   He’ll be able to run the numbers and tell you which one is a better deal.  Generally free dining is a better deal if you have more than two people and you’re staying at a value resort. For a couple staying at a deluxe, the room discount is a much better deal.

Good luck.  I hope this helps.

Ask a Disney Question: Where Have All the Deals Gone?

Bay Lake Tower at Disneys Contemporary Resort Thumb 7769 Ask a Disney Question: Where Have All the Deals Gone? %tag

From Meg L.:

We are planning a one day trip to Disney World in June. We got a deal on the Contemporary Resort, 40% discount per night. We WANT that same discount on a Bay Lake Villa resort with 2 bedrooms, but they say there aren’t any rooms available with that discount. You know anything about how to get one? Times to call??

Meg:  Thanks for reading the site and for your question. Sadly, there’s no real trick to getting these deals other than to know that they’re out there and to ask for them.  It also helps to have flexible travel dates.  Disney only sets a aside a small number of rooms under these codes based on sophisticated projections of what they need, what they already have, and what they can expect to book without incentives in the upcoming months.   They fill up quickly and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

There are a couple of things you can try.  As much as I love planning my own trips, I’ve gotten better deals with a Disney authorized travel agent.   They don’t charge for their services and are really good about finding the best rates, so if they can’t find something that works for you, all you’ve lost is the amount of time it takes to contact your agent and explain your needs.  We don’t specifically recommend anyone on this site, but if you want to know who I use and who I recommend to my friends, send me an email and I’ll give you her information.

Second, and I think this is probably your best bet at this point, consider renting Disney Vacation  Club (DVC) points.  You can rent points from individual owners on  the DVC forum of Disboards or on Mouseowners.  Both forums will require you to register to post. Mouseowners has a particularly good section on the dos and don’t s of renting points.  The Dis, which is the more active board, only allows renters to respond to owners’  listings but is pretty flexible beyond that.  Make sure you get references from the owner and be wary of renting from someone with a low post count.  Most points rent for around $10, but more desirable resorts like BLT may go higher.  Sometimes on Mouseowners, owners rent out confirmed reservations. These tend to be pretty good deals and are worth a look.  Quite often the owner will allow you to rent  a day or two rather than the entire reservation.

If the idea of renting from an individual owner sounds too risky, consider renting from a points broker like DVC by Request. They charge around $13 a point but are usually pretty successful at matching up owners and renters. Since they act as an intermediary  between you and the owner,  you won’t have contact with the owner, so this makes the whole process easier on you.  Keep in mind that both brokers and owners and have very strict cancellation policies (as in, you’re out of luck), so trip insurance is a good idea.

I went to the Disney site and looked for a 2-bedroom Bay Lake view at BLT for a weeknight in June (the 15th, if you’re counting) and put in the numbers and it came out at a whopping $979!  But hey, that includes tax.  I then went over to Mouseowners, checked the points charts, and found that this same night ”rented” for 48 points a night.  Even renting from a broker and paying the absolute maximum of $13 a point, you’re still only paying about $624.   It’s not as good as 40% off, but it’s close.

Depending on how important it is to stay in BLT, I would look around and see what I could find. It’s a beautiful resort. But don’t cancel that Contemporary reservation just yet.  Good luck. And please let us know if you find a good deal!
