Every photo has a story.

One of the more well known Disney Christmas decorations found outside the gates of the Magic Kingdom is the victorian era inspired Gingerbread House at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

Walt Disney World pastry chefs use a classic gingerbread recipe from Austria to create their gingerbread delights.  The GF Gingerbread House is so large, you can purchase the Bake Shop’s mini gingerbread houses, ornaments and cookies from the merchandise shop set up right inside the house.  This snack-filled gift shop usually operates from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  from mid-November through December 31st.

Picture this…the GF Gingerbread House is whipped up every year from scratch using 800 pounds of flour, 600 pounds of powdered sugar, 1,050 pounds of honey, and 180 pounds of apricot glaze.  It takes about 400 hours to bake everything, and by everything, I mean the upwards of 10,000 pieces it takes to complete the mouth-watering 16-foot-tall piece of culinary architecture.

Want to learn some neat tips for creating your own holiday gingerbread masterpiece?  Grand Floridian Gingerbread House decorating demos are held Monday through Saturday right out in front of the victorian Gingerbread House.  You’ll need to bring your Disney Rewards Visa,  because with all these sweet-treat options, you probably won’t walk away empty handed. You’ll want to bring your camera as well.

Thanks for stopping by for a photographical Disney ride!

5 Snacks to Pack in a Cooler at Walt Disney World

5 Snacks to Pack in a Cooler at Walt Disney World

Walt Disney World allows you to bring a cooler into Walt Disney World, given you follow a few simple rules.  So why not take advantage, you will save money and let your snack credits stretch further – a double win!  Snacks are great to keep handy for little ones at Walt Disney World, not only will they be thirstier than normal it is great to have little ones busy doing something while you wait in line!  Here are some family friendly snack foods you might want to pack on your next Walt Disney World vacation:

  • Drinks – Don’t waste a snack credit of soft drinks and bottle water! Bring your own and use your snack credits for something much better like a Dole Whip! Keep your drinks cold in your room refrigerator or pack your sink down with ice the night before to get your beverages cold!
  • Goldfish – Nothing keeps little kids occupied quite like goldfish! They are small and fit nicely into  a child’s hand
  • String Cheese – String cheese is very filling and keeps well in a cooler.
  • Uncrustables – These things are a great idea! Peanut Butter and Jelly in sealed bread!  It stays great inside a cooler and really isn’t too much of a mess either making it perfect for children!  These are great around lunch time if you don’t want to shell out the cash for a counter service lunch.  This would also be a great idea if you have a child that isn’t old enough to have the dining plan.  Bring this for them instead and save yourself a little cash.  Pair it with some other items in your cooler and you have got a nice little lunch!
  • Trail Mix – I know there are some sweet and salty lovers out there! These are great for kids to hold and keep them busy in the stroller! Make sure to keep them inside the cooler though so the chocolate doesn’t melt!

While these options may not be the healthiest they do keep well inside a cooler.  We do not pack a cooler to replace all of our meals at Walt Disney World, but to curb a craving.  The only time my daughter gets irritable at Walt Disney World is when she gets hungry so it is great to have a few snacks on hand!  Snacks also help to keep her in her stroller, it gives her something to do while she is sitting down giving us a break from carrying her!

Don’t forget to pack hand sanitizer inside your cooler as well!  There is a lot of sickness that goes around Walt Disney World so before your snack make sure to freshen up!  Also pack some baby wipes for sticky little fingers.  They are great to have on hand so you don’t have to go to the bathroom to wash up each time your child eats something!  It can save a lot of time!

I would love to hear from all of you on what, if anything, you pack to bring inside the Parks!

Downtown Disney: 5 Snacks Worth a Visit

Downtown Disney: 5 Snacks Worth a Visit

When I’m visiting Walt Disney World (WDW) one of my hobbies is snacking. (It’s my trip – I can call eating a hobby, right?) And WDW offers plenty of tasty Disney snacks to satisfy the rumbly in my tumbly.

Now, many guests think of the theme parks when the Disney snack attack hits. But Downtown Disney (DTD) has its own special treats, things that aren’t found anywhere else at WDW (although they may be found other places).

So, to avoid appearing like too much of a glutton, here are 5 snacks worth a visit to DTD – as if you need another reason!

Make-Your-Own Treat, Goofy’s Candy Company: While there are plenty of Goofy’s Candy Co. stations throughout WDW, the DTD location is where you can unleash your inner mad candy scientist with a made-to-order snack. Start by choosing a goodie (crisped rice treat, marshmallow, pretzel rod, apple, cookie) as your tasty treat foundation. Dip in caramel, dark chocolate or milk chocolate. Select toppings, like mini M & Ms or crushed Oreos, that are sweet snacks in themselves. Then watch your trusty assistants help bring your creation to life. Name it Frankencandy, and enjoy it….if you dare. (Bwa ha ha.)

Doh-Bar,” Cookes of Dublin: How to describe this so-bad-it’s-good-for-you treat? Melted candy bars dipped in dough and then fried. Yep, that just about describes it. Sort of like state fair food, definitely a dining adventure, and even a bit scary. But oh-so-worth trying, even if just once, because there’s just something about fried food. It’ll definitely make you say Doh! (The candy bar may vary or contain nuts. I’ve tried a Snickers bar; it can be hard to tell.)

Downtown Disney: 5 Snacks Worth a Visit

Ghirardelli Gold Rush sundae at Downtown Disney.

The Gold Rush sundae, Ghirardelli Ice Cream:  With so much ice cream at WDW – and admit it, who doesn’t love a Mickey bar, why Ghirardelli? Well, I could tell you it’s the premium ice cream. That’s part of the reason. Or the rich toppings, like hot fudge, berries, caramel. That’s another good reason. The picture-perfect presentation of a whipped cream and a cherry? That, too. But the combination of all those things? Irresistible. And why the No Way, Jose? It’s almost a random selection, but vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and melted peanut butter. Great tastes that taste great together!

Cupcakes, BabyCakes NYC : Disney does well in working with guests who have dietary restrictions. So it makes perfect sense to me that BabyCakes NYC, a gluten-free, soy-free, egg-free, casein-free, dairy-free refined sugar-free vegan bakery, would be welcomed at DTD. But what suprised me, who doesn’t regularly eat vegan but is devoted to exploring all Disney snackage, is the rich taste of the goodies.

For those who notice such things, BabyCakes NYC uses high-quality ingredients, which emphasizes the flavors. So if you’re looking to eat gluten-free while at Disney, or just to have a really fresh sweet, then BabyCakes NYC at DTD is a small slice of (cupcake, cookie, doughnut, brownie) heaven.

Cinnamon Pretzel, Wetzel’s Pretzels: I know many Disney fans have a love affair with the stuffed cream-cheese pretzels found at Magic Kingdom (and other theme parks). They can be good, true – although I find them too sweet for my taste. For a subtler sweetness, a bit of spice, and a fresh pretzel, I far prefer those at the Wetzel Pretzels at DTD Marketplace and West Side. I’ve never thought of pretzels as melt-in-your-mouth good…until I had one served piping hot one morning.

These are some of my top treats for a Disney snack attack. But seeing as DT is big, I’m sure I’ve missed something. What’s your favorite snack at Downtown Disney, Walt Disney World?

Disney Food Confession – Disneyland Cinnamon Roll

Disney Food Confession – Disneyland Cinnamon Roll

Disney cinnamon roll, found at Disneyland’s Blue Ribbon Bakery.

Where to find it: At Blue Ribbon Bakery on Main Street, U.S.A., Disneyland Park

What it is: A fresh-baked, soft but not soggy extra-large cinnamon roll.

Why you want it: This cinnamon roll is as big as your kids’ eyes – which widen when they see it – and nearly as big as your head. For a truly decadent treat, ask for extra frosting and to have it heated. Oozy warm breakfast goodness, drool-worthy at any time of the day. You can, and should, share. But you won’t want to.

Note: The Blue Ribbon Bakery will close in January 2012. The Jolly Holiday Bakery Cafe will replace it. The Café will be located at the old Plaza Pavilion building, which used to hold the Annual Passport Processing Center. Jolly Holiday promises to serve “practically perfect pastries and more.”
