Capturing Disney in Pictures: 9th Day of Christmas at the Contemporary’s Gingerbread Tree

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 9th Day of Christmas at the Contemporarys Gingerbread Tree

Contemporary Resort's holiday Gingerbread Tree

Every photo has a story.

Lou Mongello reports in his Walt Disney Trivia Book that the Contemporary Resort was originally referred to the “Tempo Bay Resort Hotel.”  He cites early picture
postcards of the Contemporary with a written description listing the name as
the Tempo Bay Resort Hotel.  Mongello says the word “Tempo” was chosen because the hotel was designed to be a backdrop for the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland.  Of course the resort opened as the Contemporary Resort, the name most seasoned Walt Disney World visitors are familiar with.

Now is the time to visit the Contemporary’s 4th floor Grand Canyon Concourse
for a glimpse of the holiday decorations.  The Contemporary Gingerbread Tree,
located by the elevators and the Fantasia Gift Shop, is created in the simple
artistic style made famous by Disney Imagineer Mary Blair, the artist
responsible for the iconic 90-foot mural at the Contemporary Resort.  If these
figures look familiar, it’s because Blair is also the artist behind the “It’s a
Small World” attraction at the Magic Kingdom.

Picture this…1050 pounds of honey, 800 pounds of flour, 600 pounds of chocolate, 600 pounds of apricot glaze, and 35 pounds of spices are used to create the tree.  Cast Members spent 1200 hours and three months to make, cut, and bake over 4,900 shingles.  The tree is 6 feet wide and 17 feet tall. There is a small gift shop, open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, where you can purchase butter cookies, ornaments, lollipops, peppermint bark, and gingerbread cookies in assorted shapes and holiday colors.

If you need break from the Magic Kingdom holiday crowds, the Contemporary Resort is just a 10-15 minute walk from the MK entrance gates. You’ll have a great view of Space Mountain and Disney’s Bay Lake Towers on the walk over. The Contemporary Resort is the only Disney Resort building a monorail travels through. So you could enjoy the walk over and hop a Disney monorail for the trip back. Take a gingerbread snack with you, and enjoy the scenery.

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 6th Day of Christmas at Wilderness Lodge

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 6th Day of Christmas at Wilderness Lodge

Christmas tree at Wilderness Lodge

Every photo has a story.

Consistently rated as one of the top authentic-themed lodgings in Orlando, Disney’s Wilderness Lodge Resort is like stepping straight into the Old West.  Tall pines, thick forest, and a 450-acre lake all add to the feeling that you have left sunny Florida and magically traveled to Yellowstone National Park’s Old Faithful Inn, one of several rustic landmarks used as inspiration for Wilderness Lodge.  You are traveling using magic -Disney Magic!

Picture this…during the Christmas holidays, Wilderness Lodge’s soaring six-story lobby is decked out for the season with festive wreaths and garlands.  A 60-foot Christmas tree adorned with nature-themed decorations and 60,000 twinkling lights are the focal highlight of the Lodge’s holiday décor.  Take a seat in one of the rocking chairs by the 80-foot-tall fireplace, which depicts a built-to-scale replica of the Grand Canyon’s rock layers.  Warm your hands by the fire, and look around the gift shop in an equally warm and cozy shopping environment.

Wilderness Lodge has five restaurants that offer everything from fine dining to quick counter-service snacks from breakfast through dinner.  Grab a bite to eat, and head outside to take in some of the Rocky Mountain ambience.

Follow the path… along the man-made Silver Creek, stroll down to Fire Rock Geyser. Located in-between the shores of Bay Lake and the Silver Creek Springs pool, Fire Rock Geyser is a Disney-created artificial geyser controlled by computer.  Stick around for a while and you’ll witness the water shooting 120 feet into the air.  Fire Rock Geyser is fashioned after Yellowstone National Park’s famous geyser, Old Faithful.  The geyser erupts every hour, on the hour, from early morning to 10 p.m.

Grab a snack… take a seat at one of the many tables just outside Roaring Fork quick service dining, and wait for the geyser show.  You’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to the Rocky Mountains of the great old west, only this version is more beautiful, and there’s orchestral music piped in through the rich landscaping.  One quick boat ride, and you’ll be back on the steps of the Magic Kingdom in less than 20 minutes, depending on holiday water traffic.  Bring a camera, because the Florida wilderness views are fantastic.

Castle Dreamlights at the Magic Kingdom

Every photo has a story.

One of the newest traditions at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World  is not the lighting of the Main Street Christmas tree, but the lighting of  ”Castle Dreamlights,” the light display covering Cinderella Castle.  The numbers are nearly as high as the park attendance.  Disney lighting designers use 200,000 sparkling LED lights, 500 strobes, 15 miles of cable, and 32,000 square feet of fishing net to create Castle Dreamlights. Back in 2007, Walt Disney World started this new holiday tradition where Cinderella Castle changes color in synchronization with the music of “Holiday Wishes.”  In this case, a picture is worth thousands of lights.

Picture this…it takes 150 trips for WDW tractor-trailers to deliver fully-loaded truckloads of decorations to 24 resorts, 4 theme parks, Downtown Disney, and other locations.  1,314 wreaths are hung with care, accentuated by 15 miles of garland. 300,000 yards of ribbon and bows are draped over 1,300 Christmas trees spread across the WDW property.  8.5 million lights are strung up throughout the Walt Disney World Resort.  That’s a lot of sparkling photo opportunities!

While you’re on your way to claim a seat for the Castle Dreamlights show, stop in at Casey’s Corner, located on the corner of the west side of Main Street.  Grab a cold drink, a hot dog, some fries, and walk over for some Dreamlight fun.

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 5th Day of Christmas at Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Capturing Disney in Pictures: 5th Day of Christmas at Disneys Beach Club Resort

Lighthouse near the Beach Club Resort

Every photo has a story.

Walt Disney World is a busy place during the holidays. That’s probably an understatement; it’s an amazingly busy place.

Picture this…there are 12,213 parking spots in the Magic Kingdom parking lot.  If you don’t arrive to claim your parking spot by about 10 a.m. on Christmas morning, you’ll be out of luck, because that’s about the time the parking lot fills up.  If you’re a Disney night-owl like me, and you can’t catch that 7 a.m. wake up call, where to go now?

Head on over to Disney’s Beach Club Resort.  The Beach Club models the architecture of 20th century mid-Atlantic resorts, showcasing pastel colors, intricate woodwork, and a relaxing beachy charm.  If you decide you just need to ride some roller coasters, you are within walking distance of both Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  The Beach Club Resort is the creation of architect Robert A. M. Stern, the master also responsible for designing the Disney’s Boardwalk  Resort, Disney’s Newport Bay Resort, and the Cheyenne Resort in Disneyland Paris.

A must-see Disney holiday decoration is front and center in the lobby of the Beach Club.  Here you will find an amazing gingerbread carousel, featuring ponies made of yummy chocolate and fondant, giant candy canes, and hand-painted portraits of Disney Characters. It’s a culinary-artwork sight to behold.

Now make your way down the resort stairs to the Disney BoardWalk entertainment district and out to Crescent Lake. You can walk the entire circumference of the lake at a leisurely pace in about 20 minutes.  One memorable stopping point is a small lighthouse at the end of a narrow causeway overlooking the Beach Club itself.  But be warned, because if you stop at some of the merchandise stores or restaurants, this sight-seeing walk could take a bit more time.  There’s also classic midway games, occasional street performers,  dancing at the Atlantic Dance Hall, or you can enjoy a “dueling pianos” show at Jellyroll’s.

The Magic Kingdom is still pretty busy. You have plenty of time for another lap around the lake.
