Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS Salute National Literacy Month

Disney Cruise Line VoluntEARS Salute National Literacy Month

In honor of National Literacy Month in March, Disney Cruise Line crew members visited schoolchildren in ports of call as part of the Reading Together educational outreach program. The crew visited schools in Grand Cayman, St. Thomas and Nassau to promote literacy and inspire children to enjoy reading.

The Disney Cruise Line Reading Together program launched 10 years ago, and since then, crew members have visited  schools across The Bahamas and U.S. Virgin Islands to share stories and get children excited about reading.

“Disney is a company built on storytelling and imagination, so it’s a great fit for Disney Cruise Line to have a Reading Together program where our crew read and inspire children in their local school,” said Rena Langley, vice president of Public Affairs for Disney Cruise Line. “This is another way we become involved in the ports we call home each year.”

In addition to the Reading Together program, crew members also deliver donations of Disney children’s books to schools in to promote reading and help increase reading comprehension scores in classrooms. Since 2003 Disney Cruise Line donated enough books to impact more than 7,000 children across The Bahamas and Caribbean.

Johnny Depp has confirmed his role in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The actor is expected to play his infamous role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the franchise that is still showing no signs of retiring. The fifth film in this series is scheduled to be released to theaters in July 2015.

Johnny Depp also revealed that Disney initially wanted to remove him from the project during the filming of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. He reported that were unable to understand his notorious ‘Sparrow’ mumbling.

“They didn’t understand the character. They were actually contemplating subtitling the film,” he said.

Four-Year-Old Airlifted from Disney Cruise

Four Year Old Airlifted from Disney Cruise

There’s been more trouble in Disney’s pools this week. However, this time was on a Disney Cruise Line ship instead of Disney World. A four-year-old boy was pulled out of one of the pools on a Disney Cruise Line ship and airlifted to a hospital.

The boy’s family was planning to sail on Disney Cruise Line’s Fantasy ship for a seven-day Western Caribbean cruise. The family had just boarded the ship in Port Canaveral, Florida and decided to head straight one of the ship’s three pools. According to officials, Brevard County and Disney rescue workers responded to the ship around 3:30 p.m. for a potential drowning at the family pool. Port Canaveral police reported that they found the boy “in distress” when they arrived. The boy was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Port Canaveral and then airlifted by medical helicopter to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida.

Disney Cruise Line Says Bon Voyage to Texas but launches with New Low Rates

Disney Cruise Line Says Bon Voyage to Texas but launches with New Low Rates

Come the end of this year Disney Cruise line will no longer use Galveston, Texas as a homeport.  This comes as sad news to many in the southern states as it did for me when Disney left New York as a homeport.

The silver lining to all this is that Disney still has great rates for this coming fall!  You can still book and receive an onboard credit as well as half off the deposit at time of booking.

If you book from now until May 15th you will receive an onboard credit up to $200 depending on the stateroom you book and you can’t compete with only having to put down half of the normal deposit.

Rates for a 7-night Bahamian or Western Caribbean cruise on the Disney Wonder between September 28th and November 16th start at $699 for an Inside stateroom, $749 for Ocean view stateroom and $899 for Verandah stateroom (per person, based on double occupancy).
