Review: "The Horse Whisperer" Majestic on Blu-ray

What’s “The Horse Whisperer” all about?

Here’s the Reader’s Digest version. After a devastating riding accident, a young girl and her beloved horse are left with serious physical and emotional scars. When her mother calls on the “Horse Whisperer” to help, she meets a rugged rancher who not only has an extraordinary gift with animals, but also an ability to enrich the lives of people around him.

Does it star anyone I know?

Stars? Oh yeah. Plenty of star power here! Academy Award winner Robert Redford (Best Director, 1980, Ordinary People), Academy Award nominee Kristin Scott Thomas (Best Actress, 1996, The English Patient), Sam Neill, and a young Scarlett Johansson star in a landmark motion picture for the entire family. With a cast like this they can’t miss right?

So how does it rock?

I saw this film when it first came out and after watching it again on Blu-ray it looks brilliant. The transfer was crisp and vivid and the soundtrack sounded clean and full. Disney did a fantastic job on the digital restoration. So that was the technical part. The film is incredibly long at 170 minutes making it seem a little long-winded. I believe that the film could have been chopped down to a tighter story that would be more captivating and entertaining. Aside from the bloat factor and the acting can get a wee too melodramatic at times. The film has some great moments that are inspiring and heartwarming. It’s within these moments where the story and visuals, along with this newly restored glory shines brightest.

There are only a handful of bonus features including a music video and two behind-the-scenes featurettes. They are only several minutes long and seemed to be more of an after thought than a selling point. Unfortunately there is no commentary by director Robert Redford or his cast which would have been a great addition.

Bottom line…

The film is stunning in high-definition and would make a fine film to watch for family movie night. If you are wanting more insight into this film or in it for the bonus materials this will definitely leave you wanting more.
