Review: Disney's Aladdin the New Musical

Hello my name is the Disney Apprentice. I will be providing reviews on new Disney channel shows and theatrical shows.

I have recently attended a showing of Aladdin the New Musical at 5th avenue theater in Seattle. It was spectacular. The musical told the same overall story but  it used new characters that haven’t been featured in the Disneyland show or the Movie. Some new characters include:

  • Babkak, Omar, and Kassim are storytellers who replaced the one storyteller at the beginning of the story but they also are in the show as Aladdin’s only friends throughout. (Babkak resembles Alan from the Hangover)
  • Iago isn’t a bird he is just Jafar’s assistant
  • The main character in the movie that aren’t in the show are Abu the Monkey, and Carpet.

Here is a list of all the musical numbers. The ones with * by them are the ones that were first ever used in this version or that has new lyrics. I won’t list the reprises of any of the songs, because there are a lot and they are similar.

Act 1

Overture

  • Arabian Nights – Beginning the Story
  • Bakak, Omar, Aladdin, and Kassim – A new song that shows the friendship of Aladdin and Friends
  • One Jump Ahead – Escape the Guard
  • Proud of Your Boy – Aladdin is talking to his dead parents
  • Call Me a Princess –  Jasmine Portrays herself as a bad wife by acting snotty and mean to her suitors in this song.
  • Why Me – Jafar’s only solo
  • A Million Miles Away – Gives A and J a chance to fall in love
  • Friend Like Me – Classic Genie Song
  • Act One Finale -Finishing Act One

Act 2

  • Prince Ali – Aladdin parades in
  • A Whole New World – A and J go on their carpet ride
  • High Adventure – Bakak, Omar, and Kassim save Al in this wonderful addition
  • Somebody’s Got Your Back – Genie gets them out of chains
  • Wedding Day Suite – They are getting married

Finale

Comparison Aladdin the New Musical VS Aladdin the Musical

We will be comparing the new musical to the old show in California Adventure. In California Adventure the show in put on in a huge theater, that has been performing this show for years. As such they feature much more permanent effects compared to the New Musical. For example, the flying carpet in the New Musical is used in one scene and is on a pole on stage, but in the California Adventure version the carpet is used a lot and it flies above the audience. Even so the New Musical is an amazing and features some great acting, special effects and it definitely worth seeing.

So if you are in Seattle see Aladdin!
