Puerto Rico’s Film Industry Lures Lands Captain Jack Sparrow (Update: Disney Denies Report)

Update: Disney has debunked the story as not true. They confirm the fifth movie is currently being worked on, but will not be shooting in Puerto Rico this November. Original story below.

Walt Disney Pictures has selected Puerto Rico to shoot the 5th “Pirates of the Caribbean” Movie.

The selection by Walt Disney Pictures is a huge boost to the Puerto Rico film industry and economy.  Based on reported budgets, the last two “Pirates” films were among the top 10 most expensive movies ever made.  This translates to direct and indirect jobs as well as additional money flowing thru the economy.  Currently filming in Puerto Rico, the film “Runner Runner” is expected to generate $35 million into the Pureto Rico economy.

The majority of the “Pirates” franchise films have been filmed in Hawaii.  Scenes from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” the fourth movie in the franchise, were shot in Puerto Rico two years ago, and producers praised the island’s film crews and scenery.

The Governor of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuno had signed another incentive package this summer to entice movie companies to film in Puerto Rico.  The incentives provide the studio with tax credits for money spent on non-resident actors, writers and other talent.  Incentives in place since March of 2011 have helped result in over 30 productions coming to Puerto Rico, which has created about $80 million in revenue.  The island also has a diverse filming setting, having stood in for Iraq, Vietnam, Spain, Brazil, Cuba and other “far off” places.

The fifth film is expected to begin shooting in November.  Once again Johnny Depp will step into the starring role as Capt. Jack Sparrow.
