Brad Bird

Ever since Brad Bird’s new film, ‘Tomorrowland‘, originally thought to be titled ‘1952’, has been announced, there has been so much speculation and rumor surrounding the project that it was impossible to figure out just what the film was possibly about. The most popular theory surrounding the film included it dealing with Walt Disney working with the government to help cover up UFOs, and that seemed to be gaining a lot of steam, with many thinking that George Clooney would be playing the middle aged Walt. The other was that Bird was directing ‘Star Wars Episode VII’, but that was debunked the moment that J.J. Abrams signed on to direct the highly anticipated follow up to the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy.

But now, it seems, that our friends over at Hitfix may have figured out just what ‘Tomorrowland’ is in their exclusive article. Now, this contains what could be for some major spoilers for some, so if you don’t want to know what the film might be about, don’t hit the jump. But for those who are curious to jump ahead and get an idea of just what might be in store for this film, hit the jump to get a taste of what we may be seeing.

Are you still here? Great. This information comes from the Dew McWeeny, who got the scoop from some agents in Hollywood, who have received this information from Brad Bird’s production team, as they look to continue their casting process of the film.

According to Drew, the logline for ‘Tomorrowland’ is as follows:

A teenage girl, a genius middle-aged man (who was kicked out of Tomorrowland) and a pre-pubescent girl robot attempt to get to and unravel what happened to Tomorrowland, which exists in an alternative dimension, in order to save Earth.

Pretty interesting, right? But it all sounds a bit…confusing. But Drew went on to help elaborate on just what this “Tomorrowland” is, and how these robots are involved.

The “Tomorrowland” that they keep referring to in this break-down appears to be a place where science has blown past the world we live in, and when Frank Walker was a young man, he first encountered the promise of Tomorrowland at the 1964 World’s Fair.  David Nix was there, showing off his own work, and he told Walker to come back when he was older and his inventions actually worked.  A girl named Athena saw great promise in 11-year-old Frank, though, and she snuck him into Tomorrowland.  Eventually, Frank was discovered by Nix and thrown out, but not before learning that the girl he loved, Athena, was actually a robot.

By the time we meet Frank in the film, he’s much older, and George Clooney is set to play the part.  Nix is the role that Hugh Laurie is signed for, and by the point the main story of the film kicks in, Nix has been in charge of Disneyland for many years, and he’s become rotten, corrupt.  Athena, unchanged since Frank was a young man, plays a key role in the film, and the hero is a girl named Casey who has a quick scientific mind that becomes important as the story unfolds.  Nix is a guy who values technical accomplishment over creative thinking, and when he throws Frank out of Tomorrowland, he’s not alone.  Every creative thinker is banished, allowing Nix to focus purely on aesthetics and technical advancement for its own sake. There’s interdimensional travel, human-looking robots, and a quest for revenge on the part of Frank.  He is a bitter adult, and the film is not just about Casey’s adventure, but also about Frank rediscovering the kid he used to be.  It sounds like young Frank actually plays a decent-sized role in the film, so we may see both timelines play out to some extent.

There was a lot of talk about how this had a very ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, old school Steven Spielberg type vibe to this film, and I can see that just from reading about the information from the film. It also makes sense that there seems to be an underlined family story to this whole big budget sci-fi adventure, something Disney’s films have always excelled at, and with Brad Bird at the helm, I can guarantee that’s what we’re getting will be very much in the vein of those big adventure films that Walt always enjoyed. The more I hear about this film, I can’t help but get even more excited about it.  Bird is an excellent director with a lot of creativity, so I can’t help but find myself so intrigued by this whole premise. There’s even more at the article linked above, and it’s definitely a very interesting read. So unless Bird and his production have created a very elaborate red herring for casting agencies, I think it’s safe to say that we now have our very first into just what Bird has in store for us when he takes us to ‘Tomorrowland’ on December 19, 2014.

‘Tomorrowland’ is written by Damon Lindelof, and stars George Clooney and Hugh Laurie. Are you excited to see ‘Tomorrowland’? And was this what you were expecting the film to be about? Let me know in the comments below, only here at Chip and Company!
