THE BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, is the exciting tale of a young London girl (Ruby Barnhill) and the mysterious Giant (Mark Rylance) who introducers her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.

Today a new trailer for the upcoming Walt Disney Studio’s film “The BFG” was released, and I couldn’t be more excited! This film will be nostalgic for me and many others, as it is based on the classic children’s book “The BFG” (The Big Friendly Giant) by author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda). As seen from previous movies based on Dahl’s books, his stories are incredibly heartwarming and adventurous, and speaks to the child in all of us–I can only imagine how wonderful the combination will be of Disney bringing a Dahl book to the big screen.

Three-time Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg is the director of the film, and has this to say about this story: “I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light which was so much Disney’s original signature in a lot of their earlier works like in ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Snow White’ and ‘Cinderella,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book.”

The story is about a giant who shows a girl the wonders and excitement of Giant Country. From watching the trailer, you can see that the Big Friendly Giant (played by Mark Rylance) looks very similar to the illustrations from the original book. The film also stars Bill Hader (who plays Bloodbottler) and Jemaine Clement (who plays Fleshlumpeater).

The film will be released on July 1st of this year, 100 years after Roald Dahl’s birth. You can check out some stills from the trailer below:
