Marvel Studios Begins Screen Testing Actors for 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Marvel Studios is well underway into crafting their Phase 2 in the cinematic universe, which follows this summer’s ‘The Avengers’. The newest phase will feature the return of fan favorite characters Iron Man in ‘Iron Man 3’, Captain America in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, and Thor in ‘Thor: The Dark World’. All three of the new solo adventures will look to bridge the heroes into their next cinematic crossover in Joss Whedon’s ‘The Avengers 2’. But those films aren’t the only ones to make up the second half of the Marvel Studios line up. We also have the last piece of these ever growing universe, James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. With the movie now heading towards production, Marvel has begun screen testing actors for the main role as Peter Quill, or better known as Star-Lord, the lone human in the group known as the Guardians of the Galaxy. Just who’s up for the role, and who exactly are the Guardians? Hit the jump for more info about the movie.

At the moment, the short list of actors Marvel is looking at for the role of Peter Quill includes Joel Edgerton, who recently worked with Walt Disney Studios on ‘The Odd Life of Timothy Green’, as well as being a fan favorite as the young version Owen Lars in both ‘Star Wars Episode II’ and ‘Star Wars Episode III’, and his recent work on films like ‘Warrior’ and ‘The Thing’. It also isn’t the first time that Edgerton’s name has being rumored to be up for a role in the Marvel universe. Months back, there was a rumor that Edgerton had actually scored the role of Doctor Stephen Strange for the studio in ‘Thor: The Dark World’. Nothing came from the rumor, but to see his name now pop up once again for another role in the Marvel Universe makes me think that there must be some truth to the original, and I think Edgerton may have some fans in the Marvel Studios office. I would really love to see him in the role of Peter, and I think he would a perfect fit for the character, so I’m really hoping he’s the one who lands the role. Other names on the list include Jim Sturges, Lee Pace, Garrett Hedlund, and James Marsden. All would bring a unique take on the character, but with Edgerton being the seemingly most up and coming actor on the list who has been looking for a movie to really launch his career, he seems the best choice for it.

As for who, or what, the Guardians of the Galaxy are exactly? Here’s a recap from one of my previous articles regarding the team, to help you get acquainted with them.

I’ve talked a lot lately about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, especially with its ties to ‘The Avengers 2’, and for those that aren’t into Marvel comics have probably been left scratching your head. Thankfully, a short log line for the film appeared online this weekend. The film will follow ‘ A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.” Now, the US pilot in question will most likely be none other than Peter Quill, better known as Star Lord, who is pictured in the middle in the above concept art of the film. He’ll be our eyes and ears into this new side of the Marvel universe, and I’m glad to see that Marvel is taking chances and jumping into the cosmic side of their universe. And as for the something that everyone wants? Well, I can only guess that they’re talking about none other than the Infinity Gauntlet, which I theorized would play a big part in ‘The Avengers 2’. I think there’s a good chance that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is going to be the big set up film for ‘Avengers 2’, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they somehow even showed up in the sequel.

Something that hasn’t been mentioned lately though, is the fact that Iron Man has recently become a team member in the newest run of ‘Guardians’ comics. With the comics generally starting to work more in line with the way the cinematic universe is going, could we be seeing Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man arriving in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ as well? It would definitely help sell the movie for people who aren’t fans of the series, so I don’t see it out of the realm of possibility, but this is all speculation on my part. Until we have concrete word on just which members we’ll see on the team, nothing is official. I would love to see it happen though, and I think it would greatly benefit the studio.
