The Walt Disney Company has announced that it will donate $1 million in humanitarian aid for the areas affected by a recent deadly earthquake in southwestern China’s province of Sichuan. The president of LucasFilm, Kathleen Kennedy, made the announcement in China on Saturday where she made two appearances. She also used this time to discuss two recent deals in China.
Kennedy offered her condolences to the individuals affected by the natural disaster which killed over 150 people and injured more than 5,500 people. The LucasFilm donation will be used to rebuild schools in the areas affected by the earthquake.
During Kennedy’s speech, she discussed Disney’s initiative, which was announced last week, to work with the Chinese cultural ministry and Internet company Tencent to develop the country’s budding animation industry. LucasFilm hopes that this will help the Chinese animation sector to “deliver original content,” she said, as well as see Disney look “for characters, which may mean something specifically to Asian audiences.”
Kennedy also led a LucasFilm delegation in a ceremony marking the signing of the expanded Base FX agreement. This decision will help the two companies strengthen their cooperation over the next three years, according to a press statement. It said that Base FX has already completed effects work on G.I.Joe: Retaliation, Identity Thief, Pain and Gain, The Lone Ranger and The Pacific Rim under Industrial Light & Magic’s supervision. Kennedy added that Base FX is expected to play a role in future LucasFilm productions, including the three upcoming installments of the Star Wars franchise.“The Star Wars universe is full of technological and cutting-edge effects, which Base FX will be a wonderful partner to create with,” she said at the ceremony.
