Johnny Depp May Star in Disney’s Musical ‘Into the Woods’

Actor Johnny Depp may star in Disney’s film adaptation of Broadway musical “Into the Woods“. Depp’s role in this film would be his first singing role since he starred in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street. This project would also reunite Depp with Rob Marshall, who was the director of Disney’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film.

Into the Woods is a “darkly comic mash-up” of classic fairy tales that revolves around a childless baker along with his wife, who try to lift a family curse by traveling into the woods to confront a witch that put a spell on them. During they journey, they encounter a group of characters including Rapunzel, Cinderella, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Meryl Streep will play the role of the vain and charismatic witch. In what would be a key supporting role, Depp will play a hungry and sexy variation of the fairy tale Wolf, which is a part generally held in the stage version by the same actor who plays Cinderella’s Prince.

James Lapine wrote the screenplay, which is based on his book for the 1986 musical. The Tony-winning original score is by Stephen Sondheim, who was also the composer behind Sweeney Todd. David Krane will be working on the music arrangements for the film and John DeLuca is going to be the producer.

Depp is no stranger to Disney films. He has played in all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and recently confirmed the plans for a fifth installment of the popular films. He also played the Mad Hatter in Disney’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland remake. He will also be in Disney’s The Lone Ranger.
