James Gunn in Talks to Direct Marvel's 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Could Marvel have found the director for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’? It looks that way, because James Gunn is now in talks with Marvel Studios to helm the film, according to Heat Vision.  This is very exciting news, and Gunn is definitely a very cool and intriguing choice for the film. Though he isn’t known for making big blockbuster films, Gunn has managed to impress me more than once with his independent films ‘Slither’ and ‘Super’. One thing I’ll give Marvel, the choices they’ve made when it comes to directors so far for their films have not only been great, they’ve been inspired ones. They don’t pull just any random filmmaker and give them the films, they bring people with passion and vision for the projects, something I really love about them and their choices.

I’ve talked a lot lately about ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, especially with its ties to ‘The Avengers 2’, and for those that aren’t into Marvel comics have probably been left scratching your head. Thankfully, a short log line for the film appeared online this weekend. The film will follow ‘ A U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.” Now, the US pilot in question will most likely be none other than Peter Quill, better known as Star Lord, who is pictured in the middle in the above concept art of the film. He’ll be our eyes and ears into this new side of the Marvel universe, and I’m glad to see that Marvel is taking chances and jumping into the cosmic side of their universe. And as for the something that everyone wants? Well, I can only guess that they’re talking about none other than the Infinity Gauntlet, which I theorized would play a big part in ‘The Avengers 2’. I think there’s a good chance that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is going to be the big set up film for ‘Avengers 2’, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they somehow even showed up in the sequel. Hit the jump for more on Gunn’s hiring and some theories I have involving ‘Guardians’ and the future of Marvel’s phase 2.

Apparently Marvel loves the way that Gunn balances humor with more serious material, which is going to be perfect for a movie like this. It may be a tough sell for audiences, so someone who can not only make the movie more serious, but balance it with humor. That’ll make the movie more fun and accessible for those who aren’t too sure about the concept. That really seems to be something Marvel loves to bring to the table, is a serious movie with balanced humor, as we’ve seen so far with all their films, and most notably this years ‘Avengers’. This will most likely be an epic sci-fi adventure, and they’ll need to make sure that it has a heart as well, something Gunn can definitely fill the movie with.

I’m very excited about the news that Gunn may be joining the Marvel family to take a shot at ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’. He’s definitely a perfect fit for the film, and I can’t wait to see how this turns out. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the next few years, and I really look forward to seeing how Marvel handles the film, and I really hope that audiences will embrace it. While it may not be the most popular or well known comic series, it’s definitely one of the most fun and exciting, and it should make an excellent film. Are you excited for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’?
