'Ghosts of the Abyss' Comes to Blu-ray September 11, 2012

I’ve always been interested in the Titanic, and what happened that fateful day April 15, 2012. So for years, one of my favorite documentaries has been Jame Cameron’s ‘Ghosts of the Abyss’.  Created specifically for IMAX back in its original release, the film is a breathtaking and beautiful journey down to the grave of the Titanic, something that hasn’t been seen since the night it sank. For fans of the Titanic, this is definitely something you don’t want to miss.  The film follows James Cameron and Bill Paxton as they use some of the world’s most incredible technology to explore the grave site of the Titanic, something no one has ever been able to do before. I’m definitely excited to see Disney is putting together this truly magnificent film on blu-ray, and what a blu-ray package they’ve put together.

The blu-ray set will feature a new digitally remastered version of the film, something I can’t wait to see. It’ll also feature the original hour long IMAX version, as well as an extended hour and a half long version. I’ve never seen the extended version of the film, so I can’t wait to get a chance to see more footage of this exploration. The blu-ray will also feature a 2D and 3D version of the film, so for you fans of 3D out here, this is a disc you’ll definitely want to pick up. Cameron is a huge proponent of 3D, and this movie is one of the most exciting and breathtaking 3D films I’ve ever seen. It really makes you feel fully immersed in the journey, and I definitely recommend checking it out in 3D. I can’t wait to get this on blu-ray, something I didn’t think we’d be seeing any time soon. But once again, Disney has gone the extra mile and surprised me, picking out some of their back catalog that I didn’t think would be getting a blu-ray release, and proving me wrong. The blu-ray will be landing on September 11, 2012. Keep a look out for our review, only here at Chip and Company. Are you excited to get this film on blu-ray? Let me know in the comments below!

  1. I find all the Titanic things haunting. I have seen the traveling exhibit and movie and it makes it all very real. Life for these people was over so quickly and then trapped at the bottom of the ocean for a very long time before cameras were taken down there. I think James Cameron has been very respectful in his treatment of the subject matter.

  2. I always find the technology of exploring sunken ships fascinating! This will be a must watch when it is released!

  3. This looks like a great movie. My mom and I really like the history of the Titanic and this would be interesting to watch.

  4. It’s definitely fascinating! Cameron is actually a pretty great director when it comes to things like this, so I’m definitely excited to get to watch this again. It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen it. Especially this extended version I’ve never seen. Should be great. 😀 Thanks for reading!

  5. I’m sorry to hear that. 🙁 Although, some may have a hard time watching things where it feels like you’re massively under water going through a sunken ship. I could see how it might be a tiny bit unnerving at least. 🙂 Thanks for reading!
