Evil tree. Bad Apple?

Twenty years ago, all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost–a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave. Stripped of their magical powers, the villains now live in total isolation, forgotten by the world.

From a first glance you can tell this book is downright chocked full of evil goodness! The cover has of course none other than an apple with vines growing out of the side and it was the first thing to pull me into the story.

We start off the story ten years before the beginning of the movie (Coming to Disney Channel this year!) with Mal daughter of the infamous Maleficent ruler of all evil and reigning queen of the Isle of the Lost…which doesn’t bode so well with the one and only evil queen herself thus resulting in Mal not being invited to the party of the year the young evil princess Evie’s (daughter of the Evil Queen) birthday party. This doesn’t make Mal very happy and is a great shadowing of what happened to her mother years before with a certain Sleeping Princess’s party. A big round of applause to Melissa De La Cruz who not only cleverly penned that connection but seamlessly weaved all the characters together into the novel in a spellbinding way. Equally as refreshing and spellbinding is the task Mal is put up too in the novel that requires her to work together not only with Evie but with the science nerd son of Cruella De Vill, Carlos and the happy go lucky thief son of Jafar, Jay that may or may not teach these kids a thing or two about friendship and what it means to have someone’s back. While of course we can’t expect any warm fuzz from these characters you’ll be surprised to find they do have hearts and feelings and even a sense of humor! Each character also faces their own test while on this adventure that teaches them things about themselves and the island they call home.

We also meet the son of the Beast and of course Beauty as he prepares to take his rightful throne and rule over the kingdom of Auradon which surprisingly isn’t as perfect as it seems. Though it seems he has everything the story flawlessly shows the story of a young man just as trapped at the sons and daughters of the most notorious villains on the Isle. This book sets up a wonderful story for the film which I can’t wait to see. If you love action adventure and of course Disney this novel is a must read. Great for middle schoolers and up this novel is spellbinding and fantastic and I can’t wait for the next one!
