Disney DIY: Using Your Passporter as a Journal & Scrapbook

IMAG0405 239x400 Disney DIY: Using Your Passporter as a Journal & Scrapbook %tag

After posting on my photoblog about all of my Disney DIY exploits I started to get a lot of comments from people who felt like they would love to scrapbook their Disney trips but just couldn’t find the time to sit down and scrap.  Additionally, I found that a lot of people also felt like the couldn’t commit the kind of funds that it takes to make a really personalized scrapbook.  I started thinkign about how I could help these people and thought that a Passporter is the answer.

Here at Chip & Co we love Passporters and have written about them time and time again.  Check out the review of this years guide here.  It seems to me that this is the answer.  Although, I never end up using them there are awesome pages in your Passporter SET ASIDE just for adding your trip photos! Plus, if you are using your passpockets you are creating journal entries of each day on your own! And there is space for you to squeeze in about 2 weeks of Disney vacation memories– whether you take one long trip, or like I do take a few shorter trips each year.

Another great idea would be having a different member of your family write up the journaling info for each day of your trip so you could look back and see how your son felt eating at Chef Mickey’s or your daughter felt riding Dumbo for the first time.  No matter how you journal or scrapbook your magical Disney vacations, whether its in a huge book or on a budget, the Passporter is a great place to start.

What is Disney Photo Pass?

What is Disney Photo Pass? %tag

Many people traveling to Disney World for the first time always ask us about Disney Photopass. What is it? How do you use it? What does it cost? We want to answer some of your questions and share some of our experience with it.

Simply photopass is a photography service set up by Disney throughout the parks as well as at some resorts where you can have a Disney photographer take pictures with a professional camera which are than uploaded to a “cloud” and scanned onto your Photopass card (a free credit card sized card with a bar code and unique number sequence on the back).  You can have the card scanned multiple times and purchase pictures from your trip at Disney and off the computer once you get home by using the scanned card.

More complicated is factoring in the price- is it WORTH it to order your photopass CD or buy pictures? That is where it comes down to preference.  What is great about the Photopass photographers is that if you let them take your pictures and scan your card they will almost always take one with your personal handheld camera as well.  They are also at the best photo spots in the parks.  Personally, I find that I NEVER regret pre-purchasing the CD.  It saves you $50 off of the usual price of $150 and you can come home, add signatures and borders, and then create as many different variations of images as possible.  In a four day trip my husband and I came home with over 300 pictures not counting the duplicates I created with borders!

Disney has now thrown another complication into the mix with Photopass+.  This is an added feature that would allow you to ALSO add all of your ride and character dining pictures to your Photopass account.  The catch: it costs $199.95 and you can not get the pre-order discount like you can on the regular Photopass CD.  This one you would really need to think about whether or not your family is utilizing the attractions and restaurants in the program.  The dining locations included in Photopass+ are: 1900 Park Fare, Ohana (breakfast), Tusker House (breakfast), Chef Mickey’s, Spirit of Aloha, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Hoop de do Revue, and Akershus.  The attractions include in Photopass+ are: Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, Tower of Terror, Rock’n Rollercoaster, Dinosaur, and Expedition Everest.  I think it is important to note that not all ride pictures come out good, sometimes other groups are blocking you or you are looking down and its not something you would have otherwise paid for.  Additionally the photos included in character meals are the ones when you first enter, Photopass photographers do not walk around and take your pictures while the characters mingle.

Even with the basic photopass some rides (the only one that currently comes to mind is Test Track) and on certain tours (like Animal Kingdom’s new Wild Africa Trek) you will have a photographer with you or be able to scan your card to add your picture to your account.  Each park also has a “special” picture or two where you will be posed in a certain way and have animated friends added to your images when you look at them later (we’ve gotten Tinkerbell, Stitch, Simba, Mickey & Donald hang gliding, and a bunch of balloons carrying us away).

Here are examples of classic shots from each of the parks (I used Picnik to turn the 4 pictures into a strip and make them have a vintage look):

When push comes to shove the bottom line is that you know your family best and how you take pictures so think about what you would gain and how you would use those images later before you make your final call!

Disney World Fastpass 101

FastPass Logo Disney World Fastpass 101 %tag

There seems to be a lot of confusion lately over Disney World Fast Pass. With the new enforcement rule on FastPasses to how to even use them. I thought this might be a good time to go over all the details in one post so we are all on the same page.

How To Use Disney’s FASTPASS Service:

  • Look for the “Disney’s FASTPASS Distribution” sign near the entrance of an attraction.
  • Check the “Return Time” displayed on the sign or get an idea from different mobile phone apps.
  • The sign will indicate the time you would return to enjoy the attraction using a FASTPASS ticket.
  • For attractions, the return time is a one-hour window (e.g., 1:10 p.m. to 2:10 p.m.), so you don’t have to be there exactly at a given time. For shows, your return time will be for a specific performance.
  • If the return time is one that works for you, just insert your admission ticket into the Disney’s FASTPASS Service machine. (You may use your Walt Disney World Resort admission ticket, Disney Resort Hotel Keycard or Annual Passport.)
  • A FASTPASS ticket will emerge with your return time printed on it. Now you’re free to go and enjoy the rest of the theme park!
  • Go back to the FASTPASS ticketholder entrance when your return time rolls around, show your ticket to the Cast Member and enjoy the attraction with a minimal wait.
  • Note most Cast Members are enforcing the times on the Fast Pass Ticket so try not to be late.
  • I have heard various reports where people have gone in past the FastPass time and the Cast Member still let them in. This is one of those things it all depends on the Cast Member at the entrance. I wouldnt push your luck though.

    Please keep in mind:

    • FASTPASS tickets are only valid on the day of issue.
    • Everyone in your party using the FASTPASS entrance must have a FASTPASS ticket.
    • There’s a limit to the number of FASTPASS tickets you may have at one time. On your ticket will be printed the time at which you can get your next one. Disney’s FASTPASS Service machines won’t issue another ticket until the time stated on your current one.
    • Times vary (1-2hrs) depending on which ride or attraction you just received a Fastpass for. Just check your ticket for exact time you can get another Fastpass Ticket.

I hope this helps iron out any kinks or questions you might have about Fastpass. If you have any questions please let us know.

Accessible Ride Vehicles at the Magic Kingdom

P1100092 300x225 Accessible Ride Vehicles at the Magic Kingdom %tag

Walt Disney World has made it possible for people with all kinds of abilities to visit and experience the magic. One of the things that makes my visits easier is that Disney has implemented ways for you to stay in your wheelchair to experience certain attractions if you are unable to transfer.

I have found the accessible ride vehicles very easy to use with minimal assistance. Below is a rundown of these attractions at the Magic Kingdom.

The Walt Disney World Railroad is accessible through either the Main Street or Frontierland stations. Just let the cast members know you need to use the ramp to board the train and they will lead you to the wheelchair seating. I love riding the train because you get to sit up front near the conductor.

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin has an accessible vehicle, just enter through the standard queue and let the cast members know you would like to stay in your wheelchair.

The Jungle Cruise has a boat with a ramp and a lift. Loading is really easy and you will have a great view since the lift keeps you higher than the other guests that are seated around you.

To ride the Liberty Square Riverboat enter through the exit. Once you are at the boat the cast members will place a ramp down for you to ride. We rode up at the front of the boat. Just be aware that its not flat so make sure your brakes are working properly.

It’s a small world has a separate wheelchair entrance and a boat that is just for wheelchairs. They place rubber bumpers in front of and behind your tires so you stay secure. Sometimes there is a wait for the wheelchair boat to cycle through but we are usually rewarded with a solo cruise through the attraction.

The Many Adventures of Winne the Pooh accessible vehicle lets you roll right in. You can also choose whether or not to bounce with Tigger, which moves the vehicle slightly but there are no major bumps or jerks.

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has a special ride vehicle with a ramp that you and one guest in your party can use. If the cast members are fast enough getting the ramp down the ride doesn’t even stop. And if you are lucky and there are no other wheelchairs waiting, you may even get to ride again.

Stitch’s Great Escape has special wheelchair seating in the back and you can still experience everything. Whether or not that is a good thing is up for debate but the cast members will help you lower the shoulder harness so you can hear and smell it all.

Shows like The Country Bear Jamboree, Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, Mickey’s Philharmagic, The Hall of Presidents, and the Enchanted Tiki Room have special wheelchair seating. Just alert a cast member when you arrive. There is also special wheelchair seating at the Magic Kingdom parades. You can view my tips for parade viewing in a wheelchair here.
