Guide to Downtown Disney – ‘Must Sees’ for Foodies

Downtown Disney Spice Tea 500x333 Guide to Downtown Disney – ‘Must Sees’ for Foodies %tag

The Spice & Tea Exchange, Downtown Disney.

Regular readers of Chip & Company know that I enjoy exploring the various things to see and do Downtown Disney (DTD) at Walt Disney World. Part of the reason for my pleasure in the larger DTD area – the absence of Adventurers Club notwithstanding – is that the place offers different experiences for different people that can vary with the trip. Indeed, the “must sees” for a first-time visitor to DTD are different than for guests who are returning on their second, third or thirtieth trip.

While I’m not a hard-core Disney foodie, I do like my food, Disney and otherwise. And DTD offers a varied menu of tasty options for foodies. Here are few of my favorites to tempt you and whet your appetite for your next trip to the World.

Mickey’s Pantry

This store is the must-stop shopping destination for Disney foodies. This culinary haven in the DTD Marketplace area (near the Earl of Sandwich) offers a number of goods for the kitchen, from cookware and cookbooks to coffee mugs and cookie cutters. Oh, and pre-packaged Disney food to take home. The pantry is especially fun for those of us who enjoy a Mickey-themed kitchen in red, white and black.

The Spice & Tea Exchange

Located inside Mickey’s Pantry, The Spice & Tea Exchange promises to set noses aquiver in anticipation. As its name suggests, it features both spices and loose teas beautifully displayed in apothecary jars, as well as accessories. The ingredients are fresh, often organic, and preservative free. Guests are welcomed, indeed encouraged, to stop and smell the spices. Employees are on hand to help you explore your olfactory options.

On my recommended list? Try the Florida Grinder, one of its signature blends. It combines Brazilian Atlantic sea salt, lemon, lime, orange zest, mild green peppercorns, rose petals and ginger. Or for a true splurge, bring home one of the store’s more unusual offerings, like a Himalayan Mineral salt block.

Ghirardelli Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop

Oh, you know I’m a fan of the ice cream at Ghirardelli’s – or really of I’m a fan of any Disney ice cream. But foodies might want to stop by the chocolate shop area of the store. That’s where you can buy chocolate samplers and souvenirs as well as a counter for baked goodies and sinfully good hot chocolate. But before you decide what to purchase, be sure to savor for a free chocolate sample.

As a side note, I adore that the packages are often themed to whatever holiday I’m pretending to celebrate when I buy a “gift” of the pre-packaged chocolate deliciousness.

Downtown Disney Goofys Candy Company 500x333 Guide to Downtown Disney – ‘Must Sees’ for Foodies %tag

Goofy's Candy Company, Downtown Disney.

Goofy’s Candy Company & Candy Cauldron

Let’s not candy coat this. I love candy – just see my recommended candy stops – and  Ghirardelli’s chocolate is a melt-in-your-mouth taste sensation. But If you like your candy, and want to have a hand in its creation, stop by either Goofy’s Candy Company at DTD Marketplace or the Candy Cauldron at DTD West Side. Both places offer a sugar rush just in the heady aroma as you step through the doors. While I enjoy both stores, and really stop by whichever one is closer to my other destinations, I’d choose Goofy’s Candy Company generally for its customizable treats but give the slight edge to the Candy Cauldron for its made-to-order apples. Maybe it’s the Snow White’s Wicked Witch theming.

Raglan Road Gift Shop

A fan of Raglan Road’s Irish fare with flair? Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop attached to restaurant’s gift shop. There, in addition to buying other items imported from Ireland, you can purchase cookbooks featuring Raglan Road recipes and other cuisine developed by chef Kevin Dundon. Also available are Dundon Food Experience products, such as chutneys, relishes and jams. My recommendation? Try the apple chutney.

What about Disney foodies and the Downtown Disney restaurants?

I know, I know, Disney foodies are wondering about where to eat at DTD? Really, the challenge here is that choosing a snack or restaurant is such a matter of taste. For instance, although I’ve mentioned many sweet snacks above, primarily for the Disney foodie shopping experience, I’ve been known to curb my salt and savory cravings with Wetzel’s Pretzels (try the jalapeno cheese option).

But for a starter course on Disney restaurants, here’s what I recommend. For quick service, I don’t think you can go wrong with the gourmet pizzas at Wolfgang Puck Express or the fresh sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich. For table service, my favorite meals are found at Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant, starting with the to-die-for Irish soda bread all the way through to the bread pudding.

Still, don’t solely trust my taste buds. Tempt yourself with some Chip and Company’s Disney World Guide to restaurants and snacks found under the site’s “Planning” tab.

And Disney foodies…let’s help each other out! What are your favorite food and dining experiences at Downtown Disney?

Best Things I Love About Disney – Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

100 0472 500x375 Best Things I Love About Disney Big Thunder Mountain Railroad %tag

How did I miss this among the many “Best Things” articles I have written. Not only is it one of my favorite attractions it is a true Walt Disney World Classic. It has been around for more than thirty years pleasing park visitors of all ages. There are some attractions that can be a bit rough on the older and younger folks but this one is truly a family friendly coaster. Personally I enjoy this one as much for the theme as I do the ride itself and never miss a chance to take multiple rides every visit.

One thing that keeps folks from enjoying the theme  that the Imagineers have worked so hard to put together is a nervous anticipation of riding a real roller coaster. Sure it has some curves and just a little bit of speed (not a lot) but it’s smooth and doesn’t bounce you around very much at all. Compared to Space Mountain it’s the “smoothest ride in the west’.

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the detail that surrounds you. The very best time to check out the scenery is as the mine car train climbs many of the hills and then you can hold on as you start down those same hills. Another way to learn to appreciate the theme is to just ride the attraction and you will see just how tame this coaster really is and then on your next ride you will feel relaxed enough to do some looking around.

Don’t pass up Big Thunder Mountain Railroad because it is truly one of the fun attractions at WDW. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

Why We Love Disney’s Epcot Resorts

beachclub Why We Love Disney’s Epcot Resorts %tag

When people ask me which of Disney’s many resorts is my favorite I usually have a hard time answering because I love so many of them….for different reasons. At certain times of the year like during the Christmas season, Wilderness Lodge can’t be beat. When I want someplace peaceful, quiet and serene, with amazing art and design…and animals….I tend to vote for Animal Kingdom Lodge. If I’m wishing for a Caribbean vacation without actually visiting the Caribbean, then I tend to lean towards the Caribbean Beach Resort.

But generally speaking, my first choice is nearly always one of the Epcot resorts: the Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Club, and Disney’s Swan and Dolphin. And yes, I did include all five resorts as ONE favorite, because while they are all different, they all share ONE thing that makes them a favorite for me: a fantastic location!

Located on Crescent Lake and situated perfectly between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, these resorts offer what is to my Epcot-loving family the ultimate benefit: the ability to be able to leisurely stroll to Epcot. Yes STROLL. No waiting for busses or the monorail, no standing room only, no multiple stops until you get to your destination….just a nice relaxing walk (with a stop for coffee and/or a muffin…. LOVE Boardwalk Bakery!) and then on to Epcot. Guests from this area can enter Epcot through World Showcase’s International Gateway, and let me tell you that this is such a great way to start your day! Virtually no lines, bag check is quick and you’re in and on your way! And the walk is delightful: it’s peaceful and lovely, and as you get closer to Epcot, you hear the wonderful Disney background music from World Showcase that just gets you in the mood to have a wonderful day!

It is also possible to walk to Hollywood Studios from the Boardwalk, and it’s a bit longer of a walk, perhaps 10 minutes or so, but it’s still great to again stroll along the waterway to head over to DHS. Or run: this entire loop in fact is quite popular with folks who like to take their morning jog before heading out to the parks each day.

Now you also have the ability to get to either Epcot or Hollywood Studios by boat, and that is another option that we enjoy. Connecting Epcot, Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Club, the Swan and Dolphin, and Hollywood Studios, the Friendship boats provide a continuous loop of transporting park guests to each of these areas. Convenient, relaxing, and again rarely as crowded as you would experience on the busses or monorails, the Friendship boats are a great way to get around. And they are especially nice going back in the evening when your feet are too tired to walk any further!

The most important thing to make note of when using the boats is to read the signs CAREFULLY before you get on, to make sure you are headed in the direction you want to go…and when in doubt, ask the Captain before you get on. :)

Now of course, these resorts have plenty of other things to recommend them. Some favorites include:

  • Stormalong Bay at Yacht and Beach Club: Probably every kid’s idea of what the perfect pool and water play area should be, this mini-water park is extremely popular.
  • The Boardwalk at the Boardwalk: Try renting bikes or one of the surreys and travel around the lake for some great affordable, old-fashioned fun.
  • The Heavenly Beds at the Swan and Dolphin: I don’t know if I have ever found anything that is more appropriately named than these Heavenly Beds. After a long, exhausting day at the parks, sinking into this cushioned bliss is…..heavenly.
  • ESPN Zone: OK, we truly appreciated this during last year’s football playoffs, when we were able to stop in for a few hours to watch our game. We had a blast: we got a seat, ordered some food, made new friends, and had a truly fantastic afternoon. (Yes, and our team won….Go Steelers! :)  )
  • Plus some of the best places to eat on Disney property!

In real estate, they say location is everything. If you love Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios…then you truly can’t beat these five great resorts for the ultimate perk: location, location, location!

Best Things I Love About Disney – The Carousel Of Progress

100 0686 500x375 Best Things I Love About Disney The Carousel Of Progress %tag

There aren’t a lot of attractions left that are truly “old Disney” but the Carousel of Progress (COP) is definitely one of them. Sure, it’s not a thriller chiller and the animatronics are definitely dated but it has that one thing that”old Disney” has that is lacking in a lot of the new stuff – CHARM!!

I was given the 50th Anniversary Musical History of Disneyland by my wife for Christmas a few years back and I can’t tell you how many times I have listened to the audio from the Disneyland version of COP while driving (it has the original Tiki Room too). For a while, I listened to it so often that I nearly had it memorized. The Walt Disney World version is just a little bit different and has been updated just a little to keep up with the times but all of the old characters are still there, even the dog who has undergone several name changes over the years.

Not only is COP entertaining, it’s also a great way to sit and relax in air conditioned comfort while enjoying the show – a nice break from what can be a very hectic Magic Kingdom. I know most people like to head for the Magic Kingdom Mountain Range (Big Thunder, Splash, and Space) but as the day wears on and you wear out take some time to stop by COP. There is rarely a long wait and you will welcome the CHARMING little vignettes as your seats circle the stage and “father” spins his stories. It’s one of those smell the roses opportunities that too many of us pass up while scurrying here and there trying to hit every E-Ticket attraction. Do yourself a favor, especially if you haven’t done so in a while and visit the Carousel of Progress on your next vacation. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!
