Mouse Gear: Your Disney Shopping Headquarters at Epcot

jan26 300x400 Mouse Gear: Your Disney Shopping Headquarters at Epcot

By far, my favorite shop in all of Epcot and arguably all of the Walt Disney World parks is Mouse Gear.  It is the largest shop in Epcot and really I find myself wanting to skip Downtown Disney when I am staying in the Epcot Resort Area since you can find a little bit of everything here!  My favorite Mouse Gear story came this Fall when I decided to grab two vinylmations: Star Wars (hoping for Darth Vader) and Pirates (hoping for Captain Jack) and as luck and Disney magic would have it I scored both! icon wink Mouse Gear: Your Disney Shopping Headquarters at Epcot

Without the Hollywood Boulevard or Main Street shop set up this is vital to Epcot and worth a trip of its own! The store is set up in sections as you wind your way through.  You will find:

  • All kinds of toys for kids of all ages
  • Disney World Souvenirs (including dated)
  • Apparel for the entire family (including a large ear hat section)
  • Disney Trading Pins & Vinylmation
  • Candy, Snacks, and novelty foods
  • Picture frames and Collectibles
  • Seasonal merchandise
  • Epcot themed merchandise and apparel
  • Cookware and Kitchenware
  • And much more!

While the areas change and don’t always have the largest selection on property you will find this is an Epcot one stop shop! There are also great ways to save here:

  • Disney Visa Cardmembers can enjoy their 10% discount on most merchandise orders $50 or more here
  • During busy times it has been reported that quick service dining receipts have also featured 10% off coupons

With so many specialty shops in the World Showcase, Land, Seas, and Imagination pavilions this is a great stop for a less crowded store with lots of selection!

Disney Snacks that are too good to pass up!

coke 300x225 Disney Snacks that are too good to pass up!

When I came across this topic, my mouth started watering, and my stomach growled!  Ok, sure, it’s nearly lunchtime, but I think it has more to do with all of the incredible snacks that you can get at Walt Disney World!

If I’m not careful, I could spend all day writing about all of those delicious snacks, so instead of that, I think I’ll focus on my all time favorite snacks, where you can get them, and why I love them so much!

  • Cinnamon Roll — This wonderful, delectable snack is available over at the Main Street Bakery at the Magic Kingdom.  Made fresh all day, these wonderful snacks are an incredible way to start your day, end your day, continue your day, or even save to prepare for your next Disney day!  I’ve had them for breakfast, bought them during the day to take back to the resort for later, and had them as a late night snack on our way out of the park.  All of that gooey deliciousness is absolutely addicting, and if you have never had one, I urge you to try one out the next time you are able.
  • Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar — This is a winner, winner chicken dinner in my wife’s eyes!  You can find this perfect ice cream bar all over the parks, and is a great snack to have on a hot summer’s day, but make sure you eat it quickly or it will melt!  How can you go wrong with premium vanilla ice cream, shaped in a Mickey Mouse head formation, and coated in delicious chocolate?
  • Popcorn and Diet Coke — Call me dumb, but I love to have an old fashioned snack of Popcorn from the popcorn vendors and a Diet Coke.  There is just something perfect about walking down Main Street, U.S.A., smelling that wonderful popcorn, and getting a snack to settle down with before the next big parade!  I’m picturing it in my mind right now!
  • Jumbo Turkey Leg — This delectable treat is more than just a snack — it’s practically a whole meal!  Smoked turkey (although Bob from MouseChat.net swears it’s made out of emu), terrific flavor, all wrapped up in a foil wrapper.  I love them, and so does my daughter Sophie!

  • Last but not least, I love getting beignets over at the Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory Food Court at Port Orleans French Quarter!  These wonderful doughy creations, sprinkled with powdered sugar, are the real deal!  Another great breakfast treat!

That concludes my trip to those Disney snacks that are too good to pass up for me and my family.  I know some of you will be shocked that I didn’t make mention of Dole Whips and other tasty delectables — those snacks are really good, but I don’t have cravings over them.

Tell me, though, what is on your list that I didn’t mention here?

Take Five at Walt Disney World: Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Tree of Life 500x337 Take Five at Walt Disney World: Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Of all Walt Disney World theme parks, Disney’s Animal Kingdom perhaps offers my favorite “Take Five” moments – those little breaks in a touring plan that are opportunities to relax, enjoy some unscripted fun and appreciate details that make up the Disney Difference.

I generally find Disney’s Animal Kingdom relaxing, particularly because of the wildlife and lush landscaping. But with E-ticket attractions as Expedition Everest and Kilimanjaro Safaris requiring some regimented touring, and the park’s extensive exploration paths, it’s useful have a few “Take 5” moments planned for your trek.

The Boneyard, Dinoland U.S.A.

I’m a fan of Disney’s unstructured play areas, and The Boneyard is the epitome. It’s an exploratory archeological dig site that offers climbing structures, rope ladder, slides and tunnels. Designed for kids ages four years and older, the young at hear can also explore many areas designed for full-sized fun. (Note: The Boneyard is wheelchair accessible.)

Kids can dig through the sand, searching for fossils, check out interactive displays, or burn off extra energy by climbing, sliding and tumbling on the spongy floor. Playing the xylobone, musical rib bones, appeal to the musically inclined. For tired parents, shady seats provide a welcome respite and time off tired feet. That is, unless you want to take advantage of the unposed photo ops that arise when children are let loose in this creative prehistoric playground.

Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama, Dinoland U.S.A.

Chester Hesters Dino Rama 500x322 Take Five at Walt Disney World: Disney’s Animal KingdomChester & Hester’s Dino-Rama is a Disney experience that romanticizes the wacky places that populated the famed Route 66. As with most Disney attractions, this one has a story: Chester and Hester, in order to make a quick buck, transform their gas station into a delightful garish roadside attraction to attract tourists visiting Dino Institute, the “scientific” arm of Dinoland U.S.A..

While some guests find Dino-Rama off-putting because of its kitchiness, that’s precisely its appeal. Spend some time, and maybe some Disney dollars, among its marvelously cheap dinosaur “artifacts” and toys and note all the campy décor at Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures store.

Then, if you enjoy the “Take Five” tour, explore the whole of Dino-Rama, a mini-amusement park featuring with dinosaur-themed carny games that, according to Disney lore, emerged out of the store’s success.

Harambe Entertainment 500x333 Take Five at Walt Disney World: Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Harambe Street Entertainment, Africa

While the wildlife is the park’s primary draw, Disney’s AnimalKingdom features some of Disney’s talented Cast Members. Be sure to pick up a Times Guide for the daily schedule of entertainment and “Take Five” with Tam Tam’s of Congo, for West African folk dance, or African percussionist Mor Thiam. While you’re in Africa, check out the Dawa Bar, next to Tusker House, for a refreshing adult beverage and some of the best subtle theming in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. With a few tasty drinks, you might find yourself dancing in the streets.

Tree of Life, Discovery Island

The icon of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, the Tree of Life has 14 stories and more than 300 animals carved into its roots, trunk and branches – including a rabbit, dolphin, lion, elephant, tortoise and armadillo.. Visiting the Tree of Life up close is to be struck by the mastery of the carvings. My personal goal is to identify as many animals as possible over the course of my trips. Because Discovery Island is often less crowded than other parts of the park, it’s also a very peaceful “Take Five” experience, particularly after seeing “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!”

Bonus “Take Five” Bonus, Rafiki’s Planet Watch

Many guests skip visiting Rafiki’s Planet Watchbecause it requires taking the Wildlife Express train. But it’s well worth short, quaintly scenic ride that fits the park’s theming, and there’s more to at Rafiki’s Planet Watch than you might expect. A small treat, for example, is the more than two dozen Hidden Mickeys present Conservation Station’s colorful mural.

Cotton top tamarins 500x375 Take Five at Walt Disney World: Disney’s Animal Kingdom

But what’s so compelling about Rafiki’s Planet Watch is how it realizes the conservation ethos of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Guests of all ages will enjoy the Animal Cam that provides information about animals and include behind-the-scene shots of the theme park. The Hall of Animal Health and Care allows guests to see working animal care specialists, scientists and veterinarians, to learn more about the animals under Disney’s guardianship, and to ask questions.

Rafiki’s Planet Watch is also the site of the Affection Section, a petting zoo appealing for it hands-on experiences. The Disney Cast Members who work there are very knowledgeable, and the chance to get up close and personal with some very cute domestic animals and have an enlightening conversation make for truly memorable experiences.

With its emphasis on wildlife and settings that evoke a natural environment, it’s easy to enjoy Disney’s Animal Kingdom as one long “Take Five” opportunity. I often plan a day at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as an deliberate break from my more tightly scheduled itineraries (envision me as a theme-park commando, minus the unfashionable camouflage make-up).

So take a minute to “Take Five” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. If you’re like me, you might find you enjoy these experiences so much fun that you’ll want to Take Ten! And don’t forget to “Take Five” at Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Take Five at Walt Disney World: Disney’s Animal Kingdom

A Canadian Perspective of the Epcot Pavilion

Mountain Range 300x400 A Canadian Perspective of the Epcot Pavilion

Mountain Range

Only eleven countries have the privilege of being represented in EPCOT at Walt Disney World. And as you probably already know, they are:

Of course, it’s the Canada Pavilion that this article will focus on.

To begin with, I was surprised to find a Canada Pavilion at EPCOT. It’s all-too common for most of the world to see my country as nothing more than an additional State of the U.S.A. and not as the truly unique and beautiful place that it is. So I was doubly pleased to see that Canada was one of the first countries encountered as you walk around The World Showcase, Mexico being the other, if you go in a clockwise direction.

Canada isn’t one of the biggest Pavilions, but it does have a lot of content packed into its compact footprint. For example, you will find:

  • A Mountain
  • A river ending in a waterfall
  • A reproduction of the Butchart Gardens from Victoria, BC
  • A model of the Victorian-style Chateau Laurier hotel found in Ottawa

Gardens 400x299 A Canadian Perspective of the Epcot Pavilion

Gardens

And these are just the physical features of the Canada Pavilion. In these things, this Canadian proclaims that the Imagineers have done a nice job of representing his country. Anyone who visits Canada leaves declaring the beauty and scope of our land, and this is well displayed in EPCOT.

But what of the other features of the Canada Pavilion? They are:

  • A totem pole and Indian canoe
  • An old Trading Post
  • A large French influence
  • Mounties
  • And Off-Kilter

Here we have the same problem that the other ten Pavilions exhibit: Outdated representation.

The totem pole, Indian canoe, and the Trading Post have long vanished from the common landscape of Canada. Any French influences are mostly restricted, at least overtly, to Ottawa and Quebec. Mounties are rarely, if ever seen, in the red uniforms associated with them. And I have never seen a man in a kilt in my entire life in Canada!

Off Kilter 400x263 A Canadian Perspective of the Epcot Pavilion

Off-Kilter

I remember sitting in the Norway Pavilion one day just across from the old Viking Ship, before it was removed. A mother walked by with her two children, and upon seeing the stereotypical ship, said to them: “Oh look, kids: A Viking Ship! We all have one of those in our back yards, don’t we?” The sarcasm told me she was Norwegian and didn’t care for such a representation of her country.

That being so, I can say in Disney’s defense, that without such stereotypical representations of a country’s heritage, how would one stand out from another? Today, we all have skyscrapers, cars, and modernization. EPCOT could thusly consist of just one Pavilion called Everycountry! How boring would that be?

The Canada Pavilion has a wonderful shopping area filled with traditionally Canadian wares. But for the most part, only expensive items are stocked, which the average Canadian wouldn’t buy everyday. Le Cellier Steakhouse does serve an authentic Canadian cuisine. I recommend the beer. And that brings us to the 360 degree Circle-Vision film ‘O Canada’. Recently redone, with Martin Short as emcee, this too gives a nice overview of both old and new, or modern, Canada.

So, as a Canadian, do I approve of how my country is represented by Disney at EPCOT?

I’d have to say ‘Yes!’

But I wonder if this is the case with you, the readers from the other countries represented in The World Showcase? Does Germany, United Kingdom, or even The American Adventure live up to how you would like to be represented?

Why not join the discussion in our comments section and let us, and Disney, know!

Tastes so good – Casey’s Corner hotdogs

Caseys 202x300 Tastes so good Caseys Corner hotdogs

When you’re walking right down the middle of Main Street USA you’ll look straight ahead and see the castle… It will make you sigh!

If you look to your left you’ll look you’ll see Casey’s Corner hotdogs… it will make you drool!

My absolute favorite counter service meal comes from Casey’s Corner! No, its not one of the fancy-shmancy gourmet hotdogs they’re selling for about $3.00 more now. Its a good, old fashion, DELICIOUS hot dog.

My kids love the corn-dog nuggets there, but when I order a hot dog with fries and get some of that scalding hot cheese (that will burn you for real… be careful!), I’m officially one happy woman.

Throw in a few goofy cartoons on the big screen inside while I relax in the grandstands or outside listening to the pianist tickle the  ivories while I enjoy the view under the umbrellas.

Make sure you try one on your next visit! It will have you saying “Yum…. TASTES SO GOOD!”

Drop by our Casey’s Corner Page and tell us what you think! We would love to hear your review.
