‘Castle in the Sky’ Blu-ray Review

castle 331x400 Castle in the Sky Blu ray Review %tag

One of my favorite animated movies has always been ‘Castle in the Sky’, the very first Studio Ghibli film. After a small run in America, it made it was re-released again in 2003, where it gained Studio Ghibli even more traction after the success of ‘Spirited Away’. This was the second of their films I saw, and it has been a personal favorite ever since. The  exciting steampunk adventure has an incredible voice cast including Anna Paquin, James Van Der Beek, Cloris Leachman, and Mark Hamill.  This is one of my all time favorite movies, and I’m excited to say that Disney has done an outstanding job on this new blu-ray release.

When Pazu (Van Der Beek) discovers Sheeta (Paquin) falling from the sky, he decides it his job to protect her. They both soon discover that they’re both looking for the mystical floating castle, Laputa. Together, they set off on a quest to find the castle, while they begin an amazing friendship. But they aren’t the only ones looking for Laputa, as a ruthless mad man known as Colonel Muska (Hamill) follows there trail, as well as a pack of air pirates led by Captain Dola (Leachman). No one can be trusted, so Pazu and Sheeta must stay together as they embark on their quest to find the mythical castle.

‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ Blu-ray Review

secret 341x400 The Secret World of Arrietty Blu ray Review %tag

There are few tales as timeless as ‘The Borrowers’, the acclaimed book series by Mary Norton. I remember growing up watching a live action adaptation starring John Goodman, Jim Broadbent, and Tom Felton, just a few years before he would become Draco Malfoy. I’ve always enjoyed the books, so I was really excited when I heard that Studio Ghibli had decided to take a swing at the stories. And let me say, they did not disappoint. ‘The Secret World of Arrietty’ is not only one of the studios best films to date, but one of the best films of the year. It’s a truly great film with an adventurous spirit, but one that also has some emotional heft that really knocks the wind out of you. With a great voice cast including Will Arnett, Bridgit Mendler, Amy Poehler, Moises Arias, David Henrie, and Carol Burnett, this movie has the chance to be my favorite animated movie of the year, and I’m wondering if anything can top this.

The Borrowers live in secret under the floor boards, never disturbing the world around them. They do what they have to do to get by, often borrowing things from the human hosts around them. Arrietty (Mendler) is an adventurous spirit and can’t wait to go on her first borrowing with her father, against her mother’s wishes. But during her first borrowing, David (Henrie), a young boy who has just moved into the house to be taken care of by his aunt, discovers Arrietty and her father. Having heard stories of the little people before, David decides to befriend Arrietty, something Arrietty’s parents don’t agree with. But when the housekeeper, Hara (Burnett), begins to take notice of David’s actions, she begins a hunt to find the little people she’s always heard rumors of.
