“Vacation Innovations”

MyMagic+With one tap of a MagicBand, Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests can enter their Disney Resort guestroom, access FastPass+ experiences and attractions, use as a payment method for food and merchandise,  enter Disney theme parks and water parks, and connect to Disney’s PhotoPass. With the free My Disney Experience mobile application, park maps and information about attractions, show times, dining, FastPass+ and more are easier than ever to explore and access. MagicBands and My Disney Experience are part of MyMagic+, which has the ability connect nearly all aspects of the guest vacation experience at Walt Disney World Resort.

FastPass+ Thanks to the the technological advances of MyMagic+, all guests can reserve access to favorite FastPass+ attractions and entertainment experiences before leaving home — or in the parks — giving them more time to explore and enjoy Walt Disney World. This can be accomplished via My Disney Experience.com or at FastPass+ kiosks located in Walt Disney World Resort theme parks. Using the My Disney Experience online site, Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests may make FastPass+ selections up to 60 days in advance of their visit, for each day they have a park ticket. Disney Passholders and Day guests (those not staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel) are able to make FastPass+ selections 30 days in advance of their trip once tickets are purchased.

Contactless Payment As part of the ongoing efforts to improve the guest experience, a new form of electronic payment is now being accepted at many Disney-operated merchandise, quick-service food and beverage, outdoor vending, spa and recreation, as well as ticket sales locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort using stationary touch-to-pay devices (stations also used for payments made with MagicBands). Known as contactless payment, this new form of electronic payment is most commonly associated with mobile apps including Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Softcard, as well as Near Field Communication-enabled (NFC) credit cards. Purchases using contactless payment are made by holding a mobile device or NFC-enabled credit card near the touch point (Mickey head) on stationary touch-to-pay devices.

Disney Vacation Account — Disney Vacation Account provides easy to use online tools to help participants estimate the cost of their Disney vacation based on current prices (prices are subject to change) and manage a savings plan that is right for them and their budget. As excitement builds toward the Big Day, participants save at their own pace toward the goal of their dream Disney trip, making contributions using their debit, credit or Disney gift card. There are no fees to create or maintain an account. Disney Vacation Account contributions may be used to pay for pre-arrival vacation packages, cruise fare and hotel reservations at Disney-owned and operated resorts, including Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney, and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawai’i.

Disney’s Magical Express The innovative service offers airport shuttle, luggage delivery and airline check-in for Disney hotel guests. Guests of 24 Disney owned-and-operated hotels at Walt Disney World Resort using Disney’s Magical Express service can check their bags at their hometown airport, bypass baggage claim at Orlando International Airport (MCO) and board state-of-the-art motor coaches to the Vacation Kingdom, where their bags “magically” appear in their room upon check-in. The complimentary service is designed to give Disney hotel guests the stress-free vacation they want. With the service, a family of four can save more than $80 (based on round-trip taxi transportation, plus tip, between MCO and Walt Disney World Resort).

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had my phone, or camera die while at the Disney Parks. The worst is when I totally forget my charger back at the resort. So I was delighted when WDW News Today reported that soon FuelRod kiosks would be coming to Disney World.

The FuelRod kisoks will offer portable charging batteries for guests to purchase for $30.00. Which will include:

  • A portable charging battery
  • 6″ USB Type A to micro-USB cable (for most Android devices)
  • One Apple 30-pin to USB cable
  • One Apple Lightning to USB cable

The purchase is will not be a rental, you will own this after purchase.

The kiosk will be found in the following locations:

  • Magic Kingdom
  • Tomorrowland Light and Power Co.
  • Big Top Souvenirs
  • Pecos Bill’s
  • Curtain Call Collectibles
  • Epcot
  • Disney Traders
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios
  • Celebrity 5 & 10
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom
  • Island Mercantile
  • Disney Springs
  • Marketplace Disney Photo Imaging
  • DisneyQuest
  • ESPN Wide World of Sports
  • ESPN Clubhouse Shop

I love that the FuelRod packs will include charging devices for both iPhone and Android. You can charge the batter yourself with the provided accessories or you may swap a depleted battery out for fully charged ones at any of these kiosks. Once purchased, the battery swap will not be an extra charge for you.

So what do you think, is this something that might help when you’re in a charging dilemma? The micro USB is great for many cameras too!

If you’re looking for a great way to cool off this summer at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, then why not take a stroll through the air-conditioned One Man’s Dream? While you’re there, you’ll even have the chance to view the new Pete’s Dragon trailer, starting July 1st.

If you’re on the west coast you can catch the 10-minute trailer at Sunset Showcase theater in Hollywood Land at Disney California Adventure instead.

Disney has this to say about their upcoming film, being released on August 12th:

In “Pete’s Dragon,” old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children for years with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliot. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliot seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year- old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon.

Pete’s dragon will open in theaters on August 12th, 2016. Will you be going to see it?

WDW Magic has announced that Epcot has released a new park map that now includes some of it’s newest additions to the attractions at the park. In case you hadn’t realized, the new Frozen-themed ride that has replaced Maelstrom opened this week in the Norway pavilion. Frozen Ever After is now up and running, and has been included on the new Epcot park maps. Also included is the Anna and Elsa meet and greet in their new Royal Sommerhus.

If Frozen isn’t your thing, you might be excited to know that the new Soarin’ Around the World has opened as well, and is also on the new map.

Also re-appearing on the guide Map is Sum of All Thrills, which we speculated about possibly closing for good this summer a while back. It appears it is indeed still there and going strong, but we’ll let you know if that changes.

TGIF Characters

One of the best things about traveling to Walt Disney World is that you can get the chance to rub elbows with some of the most famous characters ever – we’re talking Mickey & Minnie, Anna & Elsa, and so many more, too! Character meet and greets are a super important part of each day my family spends at the Disney Parks – and I’m betting they will be for you, too! It can be overwhelming, not knowing where the characters might be or how your little one can get to meet their all-time favorites, but you needn’t worry – help is here!

Here’s our Top 4 Tips for Meeting your favorite Disney Characters at Walt Disney World:

Technology Is Your Friend: Let’s be real – you use your smartphone all the time anyways, you’ll have it out a lot to take pictures while you’re in Disney, so you might as well use it to help you meet characters, right? You’ll want to download the My Disney Experience app well in advance of your trip, so you have time to get used to it and play around with its features – and one of the best features of the app is the Character locater – just click on the “Characters” tab from the main screen and up comes an alphabetical list of characters and the times/places that you can meet up with them. As if that isn’t amazing enough, you can even sort by location so you can view the Characters for the Parks you’re currently at, or plan ahead for the day too!

Character Meals Are A MUST: For those of you who are unfamiliar with Character Dining, let me school you real quick – it’s basically a meal where you get to meet anywhere from 3-5 characters all in one place – and the best part is – they come to YOU! That’s right, pretty much all character meals (with the exception of Mickey’s Backyard BBQ), follow the same pattern – where the characters circulate from table to table, and for most places it takes about and hour and a half to get to see all the characters. Word of warning if you’re new to character dining: these restaurants can be loud and crowded – but you shouldn’t let that deter you from planning to eat at these places – as they can be truly amazing experiences! Character meals allow you to be treated like royalty and meet all the Disney Princesses, or join the Fab Five (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto) at Mickey’s place – Chef Mickey’s. So if nothing else, you’re getting a chance to meet multiple characters in one place, while enjoying a delicious meal – and that’s what we call vacation multitasking at its finest!

The Waiting Game: Even if you come armed with a strategy and have a list and plan out when and where you’re going to meet up with your “must see” characters, be warned – it may not go totally as planned. You might miss a character due to a delay at another ride, or you might end up still waiting an hour in line to see a character (even if you planned ahead!). So the best planning advice I can give you is to plan on doing some standing around and waiting – take that chance to practice patience, and make sure you bring along some snacks/drinks, and maybe a few new little toys or books to occupy your kids (or you!) while you inch forward towards the main attraction – whoever it may be! And remember – it will all be worth it when you see your little one’s face light up when they see Mickey for the first time (trust me!)

Be Prepared: I swear, the main reason the lines to meet characters move so slowly is because people are not ready when it finally is their turn – and there’s nothing more frustrating than watching someone fumble with their camera and waste everyone’s time even more when they should have already been ready to go. So – don’t be that guy. BE PREPARED – Have your camera ready with the right settings and the lens cap off (or have your smartphone’s camera open and ready to fire away), Have your autograph book open and your pen uncapped. Ask your kids what they want to say when it’s their turn and practice it with them if needed. All of this might sound a bit silly, or even like it should be common sense – but believe me it is NOT – so save everyone (and yourselves!) some time and practice good character etiquette to help keep the line moving and reduce the wait times for everyone else

Back in the day (and we are talking the early 90’s here), my family traveled to Disney World every spring – and my dad was our planning guru. He was truly a master of character meet and greets – he knew where they would be, and made sure I got to see every character I could. His method? Well, he always made sure to grab the most updated park maps/schedules as soon as we arrived, and he made sure to study up on them so he could have an idea of what to expect, and if all else failed, he asked a Cast Member, and that advice still rings true today – the staff at Walt Disney World can answer pretty much any question you might have, and they always do so with a smile!

Meeting up with your favorite characters doesn’t have to be hard, and if you follow my tips above, you’ll be sure to have some amazing character interactions on your next trip to Walt Disney World!

Walt Disney World has released vacation packages and pricing for 2017 travel dates. Reservations can be made up to 499 days in advance so guests wishing to travel in November and December will still need to wait a bit longer before they’re able to book.

Consider booking your next Disney vacation with a Disney Travel Agent that specializes in Disney travel. It costs the same whether you choose to book on your own or through an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner such as MickeyTravels. In addition to first-hand knowledge of the Disney Parks, guests will enjoy the following FREE planning services:

  • Detailed Trip Itinerary
  • Discount Monitoring to Help Save you Time & Money
  • Updated Park Hours
  • Schedule of Fireworks, Parades and Shows
  • Assistance with FastPass+ Selections
  • Assistance with Advance Dining Reservations
  • Magical Express Transportation
  • Extra Pixie Dust to Help make your Vacation Magical!

Perhaps the biggest benefit to utilizing a Disney  Travel Agent is that you will have only one point of contact throughout the planning process. Rather than call Disney and wait on hold for the next agent, reach out to your own personal travel agent for a quick response. This especially comes in handy on the days special offers are released.  Why spend the morning waiting on hold for hours when your Travel Agent can do it for you?

Walt Disney World is constantly changing and it can often be difficult for guests to keep on top of it all. Since MickeyTravels only books Disney Destinations, our agents are very knowledgeable about recent updates and any future developments. Trust your Disney vacation to a Disney Travel Agent who specializes in “Making Magic One Vacation at a Time…”

La Cantina

Epcot’s La Cantina de San Angel in the Mexico Pavilion of World Showcase is now open for breakfast.  Breakfast will be available daily from 9am to 11am and consist of the following menu options:

  • Chilaquiles con huevos $8.75
Two fried eggs, layers of fried corn tortilla, with green tomatillo sauce, topped with queso fresco, onions and sour cream.
  • Tamal verde con huevos $8.75
Scrambled eggs, corn dough filled with pork chorizo, covered with green tomatillo sauce.
  • Pambazo de chorizo con huevo $9.95
Bread roll filled with scrambled eggs, chorizo, jack cheese, red onions, lettuce and guacamole.

A kid’s breakfast meal is also available:

  • Huevos revueltos $5.99
Scrambled eggs topped with cheese, served with potatoes and fruit.

The Mexico Pavilion will certainly see an increase in crowd levels once the nearby Frozen Ever After and Royal Sommerhus meet & greet open on June 21st. The adjacent Norway Pavilion will open at 9am whereas the rest of the World Showcase doesn’t open until 11am. Smart move on Disney’s part adding a breakfast option for all of those hungry guests waiting in what is sure to be a very long line.

Tiffins

Rumors were circulating recently that certain character meals such as Chef Mickey’s, Tusker House and Akershus would soon require 2 table service credits rather than only 1 credit. According to the new 2017 Disney Dining Plan guide, it looks like character dining will continue to remain only 1 table service credit per person. The only character meal that would require 2 table service credits is Cinderella’s Royal Table.

DP2

What’s even more interesting is that Tiffins in Animal Kingdom is missing from the list of Signature Restaurants. Tiffins is currently a signature dining restaurant that requires 2 table service credits per person. According to the guide, it will require only 1 table service credit per person in 2017. The restaurant recently opened in Discovery Island at Animal Kingdom and offers unique menu items inspired by global travel.

There are two possible explanations for this change…either Tiffins isn’t doing as well as expected or it is simply a mistake on the 2017 Disney Dining Plan guide. Keep in mind that the guide could still be updated at any time and more restaurants will likely be added once contracts have been finalized.

Many water related activities at Walt Disney World Resort were suspended after last week’s tragic alligator attack at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort. All resort beach areas remain closed to guests as fences along with new warning signs are being installed along waterways throughout the area.

All water transportation has resumed operation including resort water taxis and ferry boats. Guests can once again rent pontoon and Boston Whaler boats. However, watersport activities such as parasailing, water skiing, wake boarding/surfing, tubing and personal watercraft rentals through Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre are still not available.

Guests are not allowed to use their own fishing equipment on any resort waterway and may only fish in designated areas. Fishing excursions on Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake prior to 9:00am have been cancelled.

Lastly, the nighttime event “Movie Under the Stars” will be shown indoors rather than outside on the beach. No word if this is a permanent change or not.
