Disney World Quick Tips – Mousekeeping

Here’s a Disney World Quick Tip!

Tipping is an important part of my Walt Disney World budget planning. I budget for Mousekeeping, bell service, and food servers at all my favorite table service restaurants. Each day, I leave a special Mousekeeping envelope with a few dollars inside when we leave  for the day, and I have been blessed with awesome mousekeeping staff when I have traveled.

Now, making towel animals is not a prerequisite for landing a job with the Disney mousekeeping department, but I wanted to share the treasures that Susan and I found waiting for us after long days in the parks. Our special room attendant, Gilma, at the Port Orleans Riverside left us these special mood boosters each day of our stay.

On Thursday, we received a rose.

On Friday, it was sweet swans.

And Saturday was a couple of little ghosts!

Aside from the artistic gifts, when they have the special talent, Mousekeeping is there to help make your stay better. Here are some tips on ways they can help you. If you need bed boards, bed rails, extra pillows and blankets, baby cribs, safety outlet coers, extra hangers, or to request that your room be cleaned at a specific time, touch HOUSEKEEPING on your in-room phone. If you have forgotten anything at home, or if there is any way they can help to make your stay more enjoyable, I have found often that they are happy to help.

When we were leaving on Sunday, we got to meet Gilma and thank her personally for all our treasures and for taking good care of us. Thank you, Gilma, for giving us that extra special something to come home to each day! We really appreciated it!

Top 5 Disney World Resorts for the Holidays

With the weather beginning to turn cold, many people are beginning to turn their attention to the approaching holidays, particularly Christmas! Christmas is my favorite time of the year; and when it comes to decking the halls, no one does it better than Walt Disney World!

By the time Thanksgiving rolls around each year, Walt Disney World is decorated for the holidays and even hosts their own Christmas festivities. For example, at the Magic Kingdom you can enjoy Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, or check out Animal Kingdom’s  Jingle Jungle Parade. Epcot also offers a Candlelight Processional, and Hollywood Studios glows as bright as the stars with the Osbourne Spectacle of Dancing Lights! Even Disney resorts get into the Christmas spirit with their own holiday touches, which only adds to the holiday fun and atmosphere! In fact, one of my favorite things to do at Disney World around the holidays is to check out resort Christmas decor. If you’re trying to decide which Disney resort to stay at during this magical time of the year, check out my Top 5 Disney Resorts for the holidays!

5. Animal Kingdom Lodge-For a warm holiday stay, check out Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. While live African animals roaming about outside isn’t quite a traditional way to celebrate the Christmas season, this cozy, majestic lodge is an ideal place to make memories with your family. You’re also sure to enjoy the gigantic Christmas tree in the lobby, which is especially beautiful at night!

4. Yacht and Beach Club-At this resort, you can enjoy both a beach vacation and a magical, holiday stay! This elegant, seaside inspired resort offers lots to see and do; and at the holidays, it has something extra special in the lobby, a working carousel made out of gingerbread! You get the best of both worlds at the Yacht and Beach Club, a retreat to those lazy, summer days and some Christmas magic!

3. Fort Wilderness-Don’t want to spend the holidays in a hotel room? How about staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness? If you are staying in a camper, you will feel right at home in your own space; and if you stay in one of the cabins, you have plenty of room and a homey, traditional atmosphere for your Christmas vacation! You can also celebrate a traditional Christmas with sleigh rides through the woods; and even enjoy a Fort Wilderness tradition where guests decorate their campsites for Christmas!

2. Grand Floridian-Disney’s flagship resort goes all out for the holiday season as its gorgeous lobby is transformed into a winter wonderland! Not only can you find a towering, Victorian, Christmas tree, but also a life-size, edible gingerbread house that actually sells gingerbread goodies! At this resort, you can enjoy a classic, picture-perfect holiday in absolute luxury and Disney magic.

1. Wilderness Lodge-When guests visit this cozy lodge, they will feel as if they stepped right into a Christmas card! At Wilderness Lodge, guests will enjoy a taste of the Pacific Northwest and a warm, cozy atmosphere. After a day filled with Disney magic, sip some hot chocolate by Wilderness Lodge’s Grand Canyon fireplace, enjoy the resort’s massive Christmas tree, and then dream about Christmas morning in your warm, rustic resort room. This resort will fill a guest with Christmas cheer and is the best setting for a magical, classic holiday!

Fun things to do OUTSIDE of the Disney World Parks

disneys boardwalk resort photo full 300x200 Fun things to do OUTSIDE of the Disney World Parks %tag

Walt Disney World has four theme parks to offer guests which are all amazing and special in their own ways. But it doesn’t stop there. The vision extends beyond the parks in so many ways, and there are tons of activities you can do that don’t require a park admission, like:

  • Watersports- Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre at the Contempotary Resort has waterskiing, parasailing and wakeboarding, and you can rent all kinds of boats from canoes to jetskis to motorboats at many of the resorts. And if all that isn’t enough, you can go on a bass fishing trip with a professional Disney fishing guide who will have you reeling them in in no time.
  • Resort hopping – After a morning at one of the parks, I love to hop on a monorail/boat/bus to different resorts to take in the scenery and atmosphere there. The Polynesian is a great place to soak in that tropical feeling while enjoying a delicious Dole Whip, and Port Orleans French Quarter and the Grand Floridian are both great places for a romantic stroll with your better half. The Animal Kingdom Lodge is a great place to animal watch, and to grab some lunch or dinner.
  • Food – While the Parks have some great eats, I would argue that as a whole, the food is better outside the parks. The resorts as well as Downtown Disney have some incredible restaurants with a huge variety of foods, there is a place for everyone, from the more formal Victoria and Albert’s at the Grand Floridian, to the more mellow House of Blues in Downtown Disney (where the live music is almost as good as their chicken wings!). If you’re looking to be entertained while dining, then try a dinner show (think wild west fun at Fort Wilderness or a hula theme over at the Polynesian), or a character meal, where the food is usually endless and the characters come right to your table. I highly recommend venturing away from the parks for meals, as I have found the quality and taste higher and there are often fewer crowds to contend with.
  • Downtown Disney – This area is an open market type of setup full of stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. From an exclusive to Disney Cirque Du Soleil show, to a Lego store, to a Ghiradelli dessert shoppe serving up amazing sundaes, to an authentic Irish Pub, to a……well you get my point, there’s a lot to see and do! Downtown Disney is a place where you can spend a whole day (or even longer for me, since I love to shop and they have some of the best stores, including the huge World of Disney)
  • Nature at its Finest – you can head over to Disney’s campground, Fort Wilderness, to partake in horseback riding, bike riding, canoe and pedal boat rentals, or just a nice walk along their many nature trails. It is truly a place to escape to, its quiet and open, green, and best of all its not crowded! I definitely recommend coming here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the parks.
  • The Boardwalk – The resort is reminiscent of the Atlantic City boardwalk in the 20′s and 30′s, and Disney’s Boardwalk Resort really comes alive at night, when the waterfront promenade lights up and becomes its own little mini park. It’s a great place to grab dinner, then take a stroll and check out the street performers and midway games, before checking out Jellyrolls, a dueling piano bar where you can relax and grab a drink. The Boardwalk is truly magical, especially at night.
  • Relax by the pool – every Disney resort has at least one large pool (most have more than one), with plenty of lounge chairs and most have a bar nearby. If the Parks aren’t your thing, then maybe you’re more of a lounge by the pool with an umbrella drink person….or maybe you just want to cool off with a splash after a long day of touring…either way, you better pack your swimsuit!
  • Spa treatments – aromatherapy massages, pedicures, you name it, Disney can do it at one of their three world class full service  If you need some pampering during your busy WDW vacation, be sure to make an appointment!
  • Golf – Work on your game at one of Walt Disney World’s 5 golf courses (4 are PGA approved, and there’s also one nine hole course). If your skills aren’t exactly ready for a full 18 holes, don’t worry – they also offer golf lessons

You could probably spend your whole vacation at WDW doing things outside the theme parks and have an amazing time. Pair some of the above activities with the Parks and you will discover why it’s the Happiest Place On Earth!
