Tom Sawyer: the Man, the Myth, the Island

Tom Sawyer: the man, the myth, the island…or the boy, the novel, the attraction.

Samuel Langhorn Clemens, aka Mark Twain, is one of America’s best-known humorists, lecturers and novelists. His The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) launched him to celebrity status, with his subsequent The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) being considered “the Great American Novel.” Mark Twain’s masterfully written colloquial speech and dialect created lively, authentic characters who, it seemed, lived out the action in front of the reader’s own eyes and helped develop and popularize a distinctive American literary genre.

Twain’s Sawyer/Finn books appealed to Walt Disney as they were set in his familiar boyhood home state of Missouri and they spoke of true adventure, something Walt could never resist. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer chronicled the escapades of a kid who was prone to mischief, loved to explore and often found himself in a heap of trouble.

Of Tom Sawyer, Twain wrote, “MOST of the adventures recorded in this book really occurred; one or two were experiences of my own, the rest those of boys who were schoolmates of mine…Although my book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls, I hope it will not be shunned by men and women on that account, for part of my plan has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and of how they felt and thought and talked, and what queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in” (Mark Twain, Hartford, 1876, emphasis mine). I think Tom Sawyer, the book and the character, certainly reminded Walt Disney of what he once was, and it’s no surprise he added an entire island dedicated to those “queer enterprises” of youth to his beloved Disneyland Park in 1956. The attraction was also added to the Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom Frontierland in 1973.

At Tom Sawyer Island, kids can relive the adventures of Tom Sawyer and his pal Huck Finn. Located in the middle of Rivers of America, this lush playground is accessible only by rafts that periodically launch from Tom’s Landing near the entrance to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.  Here the deepwoods mischief Mark Twain’s characters got into along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River springs to life.

Once ashore, kids can scramble up the hill and explore the old windmill. They can hide from “Injuns” and discover treasure in cool, dark caves. They can man the guns at Fort Langhorn, watch out for river pirates and escape down the tunnel and across the “barrelly” bridge if the enemy gets too close! And if they trek to Tom Sawyer Island first thing in the morning and discover one of the paintbrushes Tom has cleverly hidden in the scrub, they can return it to a Cast Member and receive a special prize. Tom Sawyer Island is a great place for kids to release some energy (and for their parents to reclaim a bit of their youth).

First Annual Easter Egg Display at the Grand Floridian Resort

11 199x300 First Annual Easter Egg Display at the Grand Floridian Resort %tag

We headed over to the Grand Floridian on the monorail to trade the last of our Vinylmations before the trip back to GA.As we exited the shop
we took a moment to look over the balcony one last time before our memorable trip was coming to an end.And we spotted something that wasn’t
there a few days before when we had enjoyed dinner at 1900 Park Fare with Cinderella. There was an amazing display of HUGE Easter eggs.
We had to check it out……
To our delight the lobby wasn’t very busy and it was the perfect opportunity to check each one out and not feel rushed.Apparently from the sign
this was their First Annual Easter Egg Display. They have displayed eggs similar to these for the past 15 years in the restaurants at the Grand Floridian
and have decided to share them with everyone.
I can’t imagine the time and effort it took to decorate some of these eggs. They were all so beautifully done and the cast members did an amazing job
recreating scenes from some of our favorite Disney movies. There were others that were decorated with such detail in the flowers and butterflies they
could be mistaken for  Faberge eggs.
I can’t wait to go back next spring for the Flower and Garden Festival to see what they have on display!! I’m guessing we might see a scene from Brave
on one of them.
Resort hopping is always something fun to do especially around the holidays. You never know what you may discover.
Here are just a few of the photos for you to enjoy!

What is Disney Photo Pass?

What is Disney Photo Pass? %tag

Many people traveling to Disney World for the first time always ask us about Disney Photopass. What is it? How do you use it? What does it cost? We want to answer some of your questions and share some of our experience with it.

Simply photopass is a photography service set up by Disney throughout the parks as well as at some resorts where you can have a Disney photographer take pictures with a professional camera which are than uploaded to a “cloud” and scanned onto your Photopass card (a free credit card sized card with a bar code and unique number sequence on the back).  You can have the card scanned multiple times and purchase pictures from your trip at Disney and off the computer once you get home by using the scanned card.

More complicated is factoring in the price- is it WORTH it to order your photopass CD or buy pictures? That is where it comes down to preference.  What is great about the Photopass photographers is that if you let them take your pictures and scan your card they will almost always take one with your personal handheld camera as well.  They are also at the best photo spots in the parks.  Personally, I find that I NEVER regret pre-purchasing the CD.  It saves you $50 off of the usual price of $150 and you can come home, add signatures and borders, and then create as many different variations of images as possible.  In a four day trip my husband and I came home with over 300 pictures not counting the duplicates I created with borders!

Disney has now thrown another complication into the mix with Photopass+.  This is an added feature that would allow you to ALSO add all of your ride and character dining pictures to your Photopass account.  The catch: it costs $199.95 and you can not get the pre-order discount like you can on the regular Photopass CD.  This one you would really need to think about whether or not your family is utilizing the attractions and restaurants in the program.  The dining locations included in Photopass+ are: 1900 Park Fare, Ohana (breakfast), Tusker House (breakfast), Chef Mickey’s, Spirit of Aloha, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Hoop de do Revue, and Akershus.  The attractions include in Photopass+ are: Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Buzz Lightyear, Tower of Terror, Rock’n Rollercoaster, Dinosaur, and Expedition Everest.  I think it is important to note that not all ride pictures come out good, sometimes other groups are blocking you or you are looking down and its not something you would have otherwise paid for.  Additionally the photos included in character meals are the ones when you first enter, Photopass photographers do not walk around and take your pictures while the characters mingle.

Even with the basic photopass some rides (the only one that currently comes to mind is Test Track) and on certain tours (like Animal Kingdom’s new Wild Africa Trek) you will have a photographer with you or be able to scan your card to add your picture to your account.  Each park also has a “special” picture or two where you will be posed in a certain way and have animated friends added to your images when you look at them later (we’ve gotten Tinkerbell, Stitch, Simba, Mickey & Donald hang gliding, and a bunch of balloons carrying us away).

Here are examples of classic shots from each of the parks (I used Picnik to turn the 4 pictures into a strip and make them have a vintage look):

When push comes to shove the bottom line is that you know your family best and how you take pictures so think about what you would gain and how you would use those images later before you make your final call!

Disney World App Review – Fireworks Photography Field Guide

mzl.zudzkhpp.320x480 75 266x400 Disney World App Review Fireworks Photography Field Guide %tag

We have all been there, taking in the awe-inspiring fireworks at the spectacular Disney Parks night shows but can’t seem to get a great picture. Sometimes blurry, or stringy, or just lacking clarity and focus.  Want to fix that no matter what camera you take with you to the parks? This app from PowWows.com is for you!

Available in the app store for only $1.99 you can get this app on iPhone and iPod touch.  It gives you step by step instructions for not only what you need to take great photos but tips on how to achieve them while you are in the Parks! My only regret while reviewing this is that I can not take a few pictures now that I have all these pointers to show you how the guide can be put to use!

The guide takes you through camera gear and settings, and the app also features examples, tips, and composition input. It really is unobtrusive as far as taking up space, runs very smoothly, and should be an essential on your “must-have” Disney World app list! I feel confident that my photography has improved just sitting on my couch going through the options, features, and tips!
