“Welcome, Foolish Mortals” are the words that you hear when you board one of Disney’s most popular rides, The Haunted Mansion.

The original ride opened in 1969 in Disneyland’s Magic Kingdom, and in 1971 at Walt Disney World. While the idea behind the ride was thought up by Walt himself, he was not alive to see the finished product. The Imagineers had to finish the ride’s design and construction on their own after Walt’s passing in 1966. The ride represents their ability to come together after such a tragedy and to produce something truly amazing on their own.

There are so many things going on in the attraction, from the gravestones with funny inscriptions outside, to the spooky ghouls and spirits inside, it is truly amazing, and I know I see something new every time I visit The Haunted Mansion!

Here are some of the ways Disney scares us with this attraction:

The Endless Hallway: This one is actually pretty simple, as you look down the hallway that appears to go on forever, there is actually a mirror at the end of it, which fools you into thinking you can see twice as far as you actually can, and since it’s dark, the mirror portion of the hallway just seems to continue on into darkness

The Crystal Ball: Madame Leota’s head is created through digital projection – the face is projected onto a head sculpture within the crystal ball. Fun fact – the other floating objects in this area are suspended by fishing wire

The Ballroom: A common thought is that the ghosts in the ballroom are holograms. This is actually not the case – how it really works is a row of columns in front of the mezzanine are supporting gigantic panes of glass, which are nearly invisible to the guests. The “ghosts” are merely the reflections in the glass of audio-animatronic figures, located in rooms above and below the mezzanine, where the walls are painted entirely black.

The Hitchhiking Ghosts: Ever wonder how they get the ghosts at the end of the ride to actually appear to be sitting next to you in your Doom Buggy? Well, its actually quite simple – the mirrors in which you are seeing the ghosts are actually two way mirrors, and the ghosts are audio-animatronics in a room behind the mirrors. They move along in sync with the Doom Buggies, and weak lights shining on them allow them to be seen through the mirrors.

A few random Haunted Mansion facts:

When Cast Members are hired for The Haunted Mansion, they are given a book as a part of their training that explains the “official” backstory of the ride, as well as various safety rules/regulations, and detailed maps of the ride itself.

Walt’s original vision was to have the attraction as something guests would walk through, but the Imagineers ultimately decided a sit down ride with the “doom buggies” made more sense

Remember….there are 999 Happy Haunts currently residing in the Haunted Mansion…who knows, maybe you could be their lucky 1000th resident!

The holiday season at Disneyland Resort gets underway Monday, Nov. 14, and will continue daily through Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012.

For the first time, the Holiday season at Disneyland Resort will be extended to celebrate Three Kings Day, known as Día de Reyes. From Jan. 6-8, 2012, look for special décor and entertainment in Frontierland that showcases western and Mexican heritage, along with food themed to this holiday and children’s activities.

The first Disneyland holiday celebration was in 1955, when Walt Disney placed a Christmas tree in the Hub at the north end of Main Street, U.S.A., near Sleeping Beauty Castle. For many years now, the tree has been located in Town Square near the Main Street Disneyland Railroad Station.

Beginning Friday, Nov. 18, “The Magic, The Memories, and You!” show gets a new, Yuletide glow. The show features photos and video of guests creating memories at Disneyland park, with favorite holiday melodies underscoring images of guests enjoying their holidays at Disneyland.

The lively street show “Phineas and Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party” gets a merry twist at Disney California Adventure park, with holiday décor and songs. The show is performed several times a day in Paradise Pier.

Lanny and Wayne, the techno-savvy elves from the “Prep & Landing” holiday TV specials, make guest appearances in a new holiday prelude sequence in the nighttime “World of Color” show in Disney California Adventure.

Decorating experts at the Disneyland Resort have to get started early. They trim nearly 700 trees for the season, on display in Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, the resort’s three hotels and the Downtown Disney District. The smallest tree is at Storybook Land and the largest is at Town Square – both in Disneyland.

The Disneyland Christmas tree in Town Square has become a favorite spot for snapping holiday photos. The artificial tree stands 60 feet tall and has 280,000 pine-tip branches molded from actual tree branches. It is decorated with more than 2,000 ornaments, including the three-foot star on top, and nearly 4,800 energy-efficient LED lights. When the Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle show reaches its finale crescendo, more than 60,000 LED lights and 1,200 strobe lights are added to the effect.

Mickey’s Toontown is decorated with its own distinctive “toon” trees this 2011 holiday season. Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse each have personal Christmas trees in the front yards of their Toontown homes, and a cartoon-themed tree beckons guests for photos in front of Toontown City Hall.

Since the introduction of the artificial Christmas tree and LED lighting technology in 2008, the Disneyland park Christmas tree has used 50 percent less electricity than it did previously.

Carolers in traditional Victorian holiday garb make regular appearances throughout the season at each of the three Disneyland Resort hotels: Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel, the Disneyland Hotel and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel.

The Dapper Dans, the popular Main Street, U.S.A., quartet, add holiday songs to their repertoire, with holiday chimes as accompaniment. Favorites range from the traditional “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” to “Frosty the Snowman,” “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” and “Christmas in Killarney.

The nighttime Sleeping Beauty’s Winter Castle light show is divided into three “acts” over the course of the evening. Each one begins at the Castle and travels the length of Main Street, U.S.A., finishing at the Town Square Christmas tree. Each act features a magical snowfall, and the final act concludes with “Believe…in Holiday Magic” fireworks.

The nighttime light show employs more than 200,000 points of light, 2,600 individual circuits and more than 85,000 individual wiring connections.

If all the cables and conductors for the show were laid end to end, they would stretch 48 miles from Disneyland Resort – enough to pass the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank.

The entrance to Disney California Adventure and locations throughout the park are festooned with holiday decoration. New this year are the decorations around the newly renovated Paradise Pier area, with The Little Mermaid ~Ariel’s Undersea Adventure and the nearby dining locations.

The largest ornaments used at Disneyland Resort may be found in the “bugs-eye-view” world of Flik’s Fun Fair at Disney California Adventure.

The smallest ornaments used at the Resort may be found in the Storybook Land attraction at Disneyland.

“A Christmas Fantasy” parade

Each performance of “A Christmas Fantasy” features 105 performers, 18 float drivers and 12 musicians costumed as toy soldiers from the Disney movie “Babes in Toyland.” With daily parade performances, it takes approximately 200 performers to stage the parade during the holiday season.

The parade features six major “units,” each consisting of multiple floats. The units are: ”A Christmas Fantasy Opening” featuring Mrs. Claus sorting letters in Santa’s Mailroom; “Winter Wonderland” with Mickey and Minnie enjoying a romantic skate atop the frozen pond; “The Candy Shop” with Goofy leading the bakers from the Gingerbread House; “Candlelight Christmas Ball” featuring everyone’s favorite Disney Royal Couples; “Toy Factory,” the perfect spot for Buzz and Woody; and the “Finale,” where Santa himself waves from his sleigh.

it’s a small world” Holiday

Decorators use 50,000 Christmas lights on the façade of “it’s a small world” Holiday, and an additional 200,000 mini-lights in the trees, hedges and topiaries surrounding the attraction.

Among the holiday special effects inside the attraction: pine tree and peppermint scents in the European scenes; 75 gallons of bubble juice to make bubbles throughout the season in the South Seas scene.

Nearly 150 giant candles decorate the Christmas Tree in the European scene.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

Jack Skellington has his own ideas about appropriate holiday decorations. The Haunted Mansion Holiday exterior is decorated with more than 100 jack-o’-lanterns and the eerie glow of more than 400 flickering candles.

For the holidays, the graveyard in the Haunted Mansion finale is covered with 7,500 square feet of snow. Trees in the graveyard are decked out with 1,000 tiny orange lights.

The gingerbread house in the Mansion’s Great Hall is made of real gingerbread and icing. Each year, the Disneyland Resort Foods and Entertainment divisions partner to create an original design for that year’s Haunted Mansion Holiday gingerbread house.

This 2011 gingerbread house stands six feet tall, consisting of 500 pounds of gingerbread and miles of frosting. The house animates to become a gingerbread monster, revealing glowing eyes and sharp teeth. This year’s Haunted Mansion Holiday gingerbread house took months of planning and three weeks of creation in the Disneyland Resort Central Bakery.

Guests may book guided Disneyland holiday tours which include visits to Haunted Mansion Holiday and “it’s a small world” Holiday attractions, reserved viewing of “A Christmas Fantasy” parade with a delicious holiday treat and warm beverage, plus a 2011 holiday pin and tour tag. (Information and reservations: 714-781-TOUR/714-781-8687.)

Walt Disney said, “I always like to look on the optimistic side of life, but I am realistic enough to know that life is a complex matter.” I know exactly where Walt was coming from when he said that. Some people might see me as simple-minded, walking around with my head in the Disney clouds all the time. But I am acutely aware of how quickly this world is changing. And, it is evident everywhere…including Disney parks.

To me, we Disney lovers have a responsibility of sorts in helping people at the parks realize the magic by making sure nice things touch their lives. When Susan and I were at Walt Disney World a couple of weeks ago, there was a huge celebration – the 40th Anniversary. Magic Kingdom park was at full capacity and people were pushing and shoving and we literally witnessed a man step on the foot of a young woman to barrel his way through the crowd. He did not say a word to her, he just kept going. The sweet young girl, who was a visitor from England, said it did hurt and it was not nice for him to act that way. She and her husband, and Susan and I, were dumbfounded at how some people act toward others in today’s society. Susan said, “well, I apologize for his behavior for him” and I wholeheartedly agreed.

I planned that trip for months, and we even had t-shirts made up for the occasion that said “Celebrating Walt’s Dream – 40 Years.” It was a dream to be able to be there for the celebration and as I was going in I was thinking of how proud Walt would be that his dream is still coming true for families. I was also thinking about how selfless his brother, Roy, was to see his dream come true.

As we were standing in front of Cinderella Castle waiting for the celebration to begin, and watching people pushing and shoving and stepping on people without even so much as an “excuse me” or “I am so sorry,” I said to Susan, ‘this is absolutely not what Walt had in mind!’

Walt Disney World is and always will be the most magical place on earth. Watching the faces of children amazing at the wonder of this beautiful place is exactly what Walt had in mind. People from all over sharing in the happiness and then taking it back home and growing it infectiously around them was also what he had in mind. But I have to wonder what has happened to make some people in our society so cold and uncaring. I think we are going to have to start a new practice at the Disney parks. I call it Disney Darts!

Anyone who remembers the comedian, Gallagher, must remember his dart system. We could call the crime a Walt Infraction, dishonoring the memory of an ambassador of good will. It would work similar to this:

Each person entering the park would be given a vest made of a special material that suction cups would stick to, as well as a sucker-dart gun (similar to this pictured here minus the goggles).

Anytime someone does something at “The World’ that is not conducive with the magical spirit, other guests would shoot these suction darts at him or her. Ideally, there would be several different colors of darts, each one to indicate the type of infraction. Once someone had 3 darts attached to their vest, they would be escorted from the park.

I am guessing the conversation would go something like this:

PARK SECURITY: Sir/Madam, I am sorry but I must, unfortunately, escort you out of the park.

GUEST: But why? I paid good money to be in here.

PARK SECURITY: And we will be happy to keep that sir/madam, but did you notice that you have 3 Walt Infraction darts hanging on your vest? This means that at least 3 times, you have done something against the rules of basic consideration and human kindness that are required to be in the park.

GUEST: You’re crazy, I’m not leaving here, this is a free country.

PARK SECURITY: You are right about that, sir, but people in this country also have the right to experience the most magical place on earth without jerks ruining the good time. Walt had this basic principle in mind many decades ago and I have been retained by Disney fans to make sure you don’t impede that.

I think this would be a great system and they would only need to add maybe a few cents to each person’s ticket and get a great supplier who wouldn’t charge an arm and a leg to make it happen. Let’s take back the magic. Who’s with me?

I took a road trip to my nearest Disney Outlet Store (which is an hour away) last Friday to do some much needed shopping. I ran into another Walt Disney lover. We talked for a while about our favorite person and about all the things we love at Walt Disney World and, during that conversation, I found out something very interesting. Walt’s barn has been preserved for the public to visit. Maybe you already knew this, but I was thrilled to find out about it.

As we all know, Walt Disney really loved trains. You might remember my article that talked about the train he built at his home in Holmby Hills. It was 1950 and Walt built the Carolwood Pacific Railroad right in his backyard. He named it Carolwood after the street on which he lived, Carolwood Drive. He also had a barn built on the property of his home railroad where he monitored and remotely-controlled the switches on the track.

Walt’s barn also served as his workshop, as well as a place to entertain his friends with the soda machine of which he was so proud. Many of Walt’s best ideas came to mind while working in his barn, and the barn itself has been referred to by some as “the birthplace of Imagineering.”

When the Disney family’s Holmby Hills home was sold, the new owners discovered asbestos and so they planned to demolish the home and build a new one on the property. Thank goodness Diane Disney Miller realized the importance of her father’s barn and thus wanted to preserve it. She asked the new owner if she could have it and he agreed. So, she began the process of saving it before escrow would close by contacting Michael and Sharon Broggie, the founders of The Carolwood Pacific Historical Society. They began planning what they would do with the barn.

The Broggies hired a contractor to dismantle the barn and housed it in Griffith Park, which you might remember as the park Walt used to take his daughters to on “Daddy’s Day” and watch them on the carousel — thus sparking the idea of a place where parents and children could have fun together — Disneyland!

With the help of a large number of volunteers, the barn was reconstructed and about 80% of what stands today was part of the original barn. In addition, Bill Evans (who landscaped most of the original Disneyland as well as the Disney family’s Carolwood backyard) donated his expertise to landscape the area around the barn’s new home “to match its original location in Holmby Hills.”

The barn opened in Griffith Park on July 19, 1999. Diane Disney Miller dedicated the barn as a new place to learn more about her father. At the opening ceremony Diane said, “Our heart and heritage is here, in this place.” It has been thoughtfully located in a beautifully-landscaped area of the park where one can enjoy the view of it while having lunch at one of the available picnic tables.

Courtesy of The Carolwood Pacific Historical Society

The barn is said to be small but full of many interesting items, nostalgic memories and wonderful stories. Items on display include an extensive collection of Disney and steam-train-related memorabilia including: Walt’s workbenches, hand-built by Walt Disney himself; the track switchboard Walt used to control the electronic track switches throughout the Carolwood railway;one of Walt’s porkpie-style hats; and an extensive display of memorabilia relating to the Disneyland Monorail, including a working 1960s-era monorail toy.

Walt’s Barn is open to visitors on the 3rd Sunday of each month between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. While visiting you can learn some interesting facts about Walt, the railroad and Disneyland. You can also purchase some unique merchandise.

I have added this park to my Disney bucket list and I hope you will too. If you have visited the barn I would love to hear about it, so please post your personal story here and thanks!

Norwegian architects and historians worked closely with Walt Disney Imagineers to intertwine the natural environment into the design of Epcot’s Norway Pavilion. Aged stone, stucco and wood surfaces enhance the rustic, earthy facades and create an authentic Guest experience. The plaza’s cobbled walkways and grass-covered roofs, like those of Alesund, Bergen, Oslo and the Setesdal Valley, center around a Stave church—or Stavkirke—a pagan building of worship once found in almost every Norwegian town and village. The twenty-eight still standing today are some of the oldest wooden structures in the world. Epcot’s version is a faithful reproduction of Hallingdal’s Gol Stave Church, right down to the use of dovetail joints and lack of iron nails that would rust in maritime air.

And of course, there’s the regal Akershus, modeled after the medieval castle by the same name located in Oslo. Built in 1299, the original castle was renovated in the mid-17th century, acquiring its present appearance. Epcot’s Akershus houses a Character dining experience, serving fine Norwegian fare to the Park’s young Princes and Princesses and their parents.

Epcot Norway Pavilion

The nation’s seafaring heritage resonates throughout the Norway Pavilion. Guarding the north entry stands wreckage of a dragon-headed Norse ship (formerly a children’s play area) tucked into foliage. The vessel itself mimics the ones Guests board to ride the Maelstrom, one of only two rides on World Showcase. (Mexico hosts the other.) The Maelstrom boat ride through Norway’s folklore and culture is almost as exciting as the name suggests, boasting a backward drop over a waterfall, which was a unique feature at its debut, and a three-headed troll who protects the forest.

Trolls, very common in Scandinavian myths and tales, are hidden throughout the Pavilion. Do you like to find hidden Mickeys? Well, try finding the hidden trolls in Norway! According to Norwegian tradition, trolls vary in size and form. Some can have up to 9 heads! They are generally unpleasing to the eye, often big, hairy and slow. Any courageous and quick-witted human, they say, could easily outwit a troll. Trolls often live in mountains, under bridges or at the bottom of lakes. At one time, the Norway Pavilion was said to be inhabited by more than 20 trolls who hid well and often changed locales. Not to worry, though! All of Epcot’s trolls are friendly, and those that might be feisty turn to stone when exposed to sunlight.

Kids can take the magic home and create a troll pencil topper like this one using sculpting clay, beads and feathers. Simply insert a pencil eraser into a ball of softened sculpting clay and shape troll to your liking. Make him as cute or as ugly as you want by adding beads, feathers or other decorations. Remove from the pencil and set out to dry completely (follow directions on sculpting clay package). When the clay is set, replace on pencil to keep classmates from peeking at your homework!

When making your way through the lands of Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, there is one that stands out a little more fantastical than the rest. Sure, you can visit new frontiers, have some new adventures, make fantasies reality, and travel back in time but there is only one place where you are transported into the future: Tomorrowland.

Located due east from the main hub, Tomorrowland includes 8 attractions and 4 quick service eating locations.

Of all the things included in Tomorrowland, I think my favorite has to be THE PEOPLE MOVER! This simple conveyor system, bucket seated ride takes you on a tour of the entire land with some of my favorite views of Cinderella castle in the entire park (especially if you happen to be riding during the second showing of the night parade or Wishes). I can’t help but head right over every time I have to wait for a showing at Monster’s Inc Laugh Floor or Stitch’s Great Escape! And on exceptionally slow days for the People Mover, you can even sometimes get castmembers to agree to let you go for a second spin! And speaking of Stitch, he is a regular character to catch on meet and greets around Tomorrowland, along with Buzz Lightyear!

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is tucked in the back of Tomorrowland and offers a fun glimpse into an old World’s Fair animatronic attraction created by Mr. Disney himself. While the “future” section featured here looks outdated in the way that Back to the Future’s “future” did, its still fun and entertaining. Not only do you get a look at how technology and life has progressed for a family here but one of the catchiest songs is sure to be stuck in your head all day…. There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, Shining at the end of every day, There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow, And tomorrow’s just a dream away!

There are two fan favorite located within this area as well: Space Mountain, the indoor rollercoaster which sends you sky rocketing into the stars, and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, a fun for the whole family target shooting adventure that taking you to infinity and beyond! And towering high about Tomorrowland as you enter, is the Astro Orbiter, which you can enter near the People Move line! Also be sure not to miss the Tomorrowland Indy Speedway! While there is no fast pass for this attraction if you hit the timing right you can walk through with a minimal wait and have a great time racing around the track here!

Once you have worked up your appetite try one of the many eateries here: Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, The Lunching Pad, Auntie Gravity’s and seasonally Tomorrowland Terrace Noodle. Cosmic Ray’s is a go-to spot for lots of visitors since it is right off of the hub and offers many choices (including vegetarian). Aunt Gravity’s is another often-packed snack stop and a great place to stop for a drink or ice cream as you stroll through this land! There is ample seating at most stops and around the area, making it a great place to eat & play!

Unlike Main Street U.S.A. in Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom represents more than Walt’s home town of Marceline, Missouri – it represents Saratoga Springs, NY, to New Orleans, to New England all in one seamless street. From the beginning of Main Street, coming from the Main Street Train Station and heading towards the castle, you literally walk through time – celebrating the 4th of July (notice the flags?) over a couple of decades. As Walt had wanted, Main Street represents 1890-1910, when the street lamps turned from gas to electric bulbs, the horse-drawn street cars were used less as the “horse-less” carriage” became more popular. Main Street represents the changing and optimism of early 20th century America.

Walking down Main Street, you feel as though you are surrounded by huge buildings, while in reality, what Imagineers call “forced perspective” is used to represent the tall buildings that, upon further inspection, are clearly not 3 stories tall. The windows above the multitude of stores and restaurants honor and represent those who made Walt Disney World happen. There are windows for Walter E. Disney “Chief Engineer” at the Main Street Train Station, and also for the Walter E. Disney Graduate School of Design and Master Planning.

Walt’s older brother, Roy O. Disney is represented on a park bench in Town Square, sitting next to Minnie Mouse, because without Roy, WDW may have never happened after Walt’s death.

Aside from the historical references and tributes, Main Street U.S.A. is filled with shopping of all kinds – jewelry, apparel, food, treats, anything you could imagine can be found in those stores. The Main Street Bakery is filled with delicious treats, such as the famous Mickey Mouse rice cereal treats and cinnamon buns. Near the end, closer to Cinderella Castle are Casey’s Corner, The Crystal Palace Restaurant, and The Plaza restaurant – literally food for anyone and everyone.

Main Street U.S.A. is also home to some of the best Streetmosphere in all of Walt Disney World. You can find the Dapper Dans, a barbershop quartet, serenading the crowd, or find the Mayor and his friends mingling with the towns people. On our last trip, we met the Mayor, some lovely town ladies, and watched a saxophone ensemble perform, as they all broke out into song in the middle of the street. If you’re at Casey’s Corner for a hot dog, you may be lucky enough to see Casey’s Corner Piano Man sit down for some extra entertainment.

Next time you’re in a hurry to ride Space Mountain before the crowds gather, slow down and look up. Maybe you’ll see a window that will inspire you to continue your research. And we’ll try to help you discover more, here at Chip and Company!

Anyone planning a trip to Disney or who has been there before knows that are certain attractions that get a lot of attention and fill up the queues really quick. Therefore, some other Disney attractions that may not offer the latest technology or the biggest thrills sometimes get overlooked and are definitely underrated. This is unfortunate since some of Disney’s best secrets are underrated attractions. Therefore, I have compiled a list of Top 5 Underrated Disney World Attractions for you to check out on your next trip to Disney World!

1. Carousel of Progress-This attraction came from the mind of Walt Disney himself and was shown at the 1964 New York World’s Fair to raving reviews! Today, this show still runs in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom and has the honor of being the longest running show in American theater! The Carousel of Progress is unique in that the theater rotates around to different stages where you get to see how progress and new inventions impacted daily life in the early twentieth century. This charming show is both educational and entertaining. It’s usually not at the top of many Disney guest to-do lists; but it definitely should be! All ages enjoy it and it gives us a glimpse into the mind of Walt Disney himself.

2. TTA-This attraction is a favorite among Disney regulars, and it’s one of my personal all-time favorites too. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority WedWay People Mover has guests board a vehicle which takes you on a covered track all around Tomorrowland and even into some of the buildings and attractions! This attraction is rather simple in that the gentle ride and the view is the primary draw; but its underrated because it’s so enjoyable! Our family likes to hop on the TTA to get off our feet, enjoy the breeze you get from moving down the track, and enjoy good conversation. The seats in each car face each other which is ideal for chatting and planning the rest of the day. It’s also a great attraction for parents who have tired kids or who just need a break from the heat and crowds.

3. The American Adventure-This attraction is an audio-animatronic show located at the American Adventure pavilion at Epcot. I think this show gets overlooked as most of the attention focuses on the Magic Kingdom’s Hall of Presidents; but the American Adventure is just as good, if not better, with it’s elaborate sets and variety of American heroes. In fact, one of the audio-animatronics actually twirls a lasso! This patriotic show is moving, entertaining, and I believe it’s a must-see for any Disney guest!

4. Living with the Land-Living with the Land is a gentle boat ride located inside The Land pavilion at Epcot. This attraction educates guest about the earth and different landscapes before taking them through greenhouses where guests witness new agricultural methods. Adults will find it very interesting; and kids will enjoy the ride and seeing Mickey shaped pumpkins being grown!

5. Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse-This classic Disney attraction is based off of the Disney film which was based off of the famous novel! This attraction is one of the most comfortable, innovative treehouses you have ever seen! At The Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, you walk through the different rooms in this tree and see how the Robinsons used whatever they had to make a home, such as a huge seashell for a sink! There are tons of detail and clever egineering everywhere so be sure to take your time and keep your eyes open!

So what do you think? Do you think these attractions are underrated? Are any of these attractions some of your favorites?

It’s officially summer! Kids are on summer vacation, the temperatures are rising, people are filling up their pools, and families are going on vacation. Therefore, Disney World is a crowded place to be! If you’re visiting Disney World during the summer, you’re probably wondering how can I experience attractions without waiting and waiting? Is there anything that has a short line? Yes, there is! Disney World actually has many attractions that offer short waits almost all of the time so I have compiled a Top 10 list of attractions with the shortest lines.

1. TTA/WedWay People Mover-This attraction rarely ever has a wait; and even if it does, it’s usually very short. On really slow days, some Cast Members will even let you stay on the ride if you don’t want to get off, which is great if it’s raining or you have tired feet or tired kids. This attraction also gives riders a sneak peak of Space Mountain and is about 10 minutes long, which is pretty lengthy in comparison to other rides and shows. Regardless of what time of year you visit Disney World, you are almost always guaranteed a ride on the TTA with a minimum wait.

2. Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream-This Hollywood Studios attraction is a walk-through museum where you can learn about Walt’s life, the history of the Disney company, and the Disney parks. There are also models and artifacts and other things to see. I’ve noticed that both kids and adults enjoy this attraction; and since it’s kind of a walk-through musuem, guests can explore it at their own pace and I’ve never seen a line for it yet.

3. American Adventure-This show can be found at the American Adventure pavilion in Epcot. It’s an audio-animatronic show featuring major American characters in major moments of American history, along with beautiful sets and music. It’s a very moving show and usually the only waiting you will do is waiting for the next showtime. If you do arrive a bit before the show starts, you will be treated to a singing group, the Voices of Liberty, who sing just in the show’s foyer. This group is very talented and they dress in period costumes!

4. Spaceship Earth-Spaceship Earth is a very unique attraction in that is located inside of Epcot’s icon and share’s the same name. Spaceship Earth is a slow moving attraction that takes guests back in time to see advances mankind has made throughout history. This attraction can have a lengthy line at certain points during the day, especially early in the morning, but the line moves very quickly and the ride itself is longer than most.

5. Hall of Presidents-This attraction is a patriotic, historical show at the Magic Kingdom featuring audio-animatronics of all of our country’s presidents. This show is housed in a beautiful theater and narrated by Morgan Freeman. It’s an amazing show to experience and because the theater can see large numbers of guests, there’s usually no wait except for waiting for the show to begin.

6. Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse-This classic, walk-through attraction can be found in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom. This treehouse is based off of the classic book and classic Disney film; and at the Magic Kingdom, you get to walk through the Robinson’s treehouse yourself and see how they used their surroundings to make a comfortable home. Since you can walk through this attraction, it is very rare to find a wait! But be sure not to rush through the treehouse as there are lots of details to see!

7. Backlot Tour-This attraction, located at Hollywood Studios, is really unique in that it offers several experiences in one. You will witness how action scenes are shot, see tons of props from popular movies, and even see how filmmakers use special effects at Catastrophe Canyon. This attraction can handle large volumes of guests so the line is hardly ever long!

8. Walt Disney World Railroad-The Walt Disney World Railroad is both transportation and an attraction. The train station, and possibly the train, are the first things you see when you arrive at the Magic Kingdom. You can hop aboard a train here near the entrance and ride a mile and a half around the park, or you can hop aboard at the Frontierland station later on. It’s up to you! The railroad gives you a different view of the park and is enjoyable and relaxing for all ages. Also, the only waiting you will have to do is waiting for a train to pull into the station.

9. Country Bear Jamboree-This classic Disney attraction has been entertaining guests since Disney World opened in 1971. This show has been criticized as cheesey; but it’s also charming andyou can’t help but smile. This show plays throughout the day at the Magic Kingdom and hardly ever has a long wait. It’s a great place to sit down, cool off, laugh a little, and young kids will enjoy it as well.

10. It’s Tough to be a Bug-Whether this show is good or not is often a topic up for debate since it seems to be geared towards kids and is funny, but yet a little too scary and the creepy-crawlers make guests want to run for the door. Despite what you think, this 3-D show almost always has a short wait.

Honorable Mentions: Living with the Land, Mickey’s Philharmagic, The Magic of Disney Animation

Now let me know what you think? Do you ever retreat to these attractions when the lines get too long?

World Showcase is one of the most popular areas at Disney World and at the top of my list when I visit. Who doesn’t like traveling around the world in an afternoon, experiencing different cultures, cuisine, products, architecture, and dining experiences! Of the nine different World Showcase pavilions, which are packed full of things to see and do, everyone has their own favorite; but today, I am listing my own Top 5 favorite pavilions!

1. Norway-This pavilion is my favorite because there is so much great stuff here! Norway transports me to a Norwegian village and back in time to the days of the Vikings! Norway is home to Akershus Storybook Dining, it’s one of my favorite character meals and restaurants. Here adults can experience delicious Norwegian fare while their own little princesses meet a variety of Disney princesses! Norway also has an attraction, Maelstrom, a boat ride through Norway’s history and mythology. It’s actually pretty good too! In addition to this pavilions shops, there is also the Stave Church to explore; and if you get hungry, visit the Kringla Og Bakeri for some famous school bread and then enjoy it at the nearby seating area with grass growing on the roof!

2. United Kingdom-This pavilion is interesting to me because of the history and variety of architecture and detail found here, particularly in the different buildings. Also, who doesn’t enjoythe popular Rose and Crown Pub and Yorkshire Fish and Chips! I like to shop too and the United Kingdom is a great place to do just that. There is also a vast variety of merchandise available here ranging from the Beatles to perfume to British toys and even tea. Tucked near the back of this pavilion is a quiet sitting area which provides a nice escape from the crowds; and you can often find entertainers performing on the street! Also, if you’re a big Disney character fan, as I am, the United Kingdom is a great place to find a vast quantity of Disney characters such as Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, and sometimes more!

3. France-This beautiful pavilion is full charm and detail, and who wouldn’t enjoy seeing the Eiffel Tower in the background? The shopping here is great by the way. I always have to do some browsing while I’m here. I especially like the home decor, mini-Eiffel Towers, and perfume. There’s also two table service restaurants here: Les Chefs de France and Bistro de Paris. Les Chefs de France is one of my favorite WDW restaurants; and throughout the day, Remy from Pixar’s Ratatouille stops by! Be sure to France thoroughly on your visit as it goes back farther than many realize to reveal another shop and one of World Showcase’s best bakeries, La Boulangerie Patisserie. I also enjoy this pavilion due its location next to the International Gateway, where you can hop on a “Friendship” boat to visit the Epcot Resorts or continue on to Hollywood Studios.

4. Germany-This is a popular pavilion with many guests, including myself. The Germany pavilion takes you into the pages of a classic fairytale with it’s clocktowers, turrets, and German village design. Here you can grab a meal at the Biergarten Restaurant or Sommerfest and do some serious shopping! There is a variety of German merchandise, such as Christmas ornaments, steins, toys, cuckoo clocks, soccer gear, and crystal jewelry. If you have a sweet tooth, like me, you must drop in the new Karamell Kuche for traditional caramel candies or some unique, caramel treats! Also, take some time to enjoy the minature train village nearby, kids and adults both enjoy it.

5. Canada-I like Canada because it’s different than most World Showcase pavilions. Tucked behind its shops, which represent both Canada’s rugged, Northwestern culture and elegant, European architecture, is a little piece of the Canadian Rockies. Several paths and bridges take you over little streams and by a waterfall on your way to a tribute film about Canada starring Martin Short, and it’s totally cool that the theater is nestled inside of a replica mine! For fellow shoppers, like myself, be sure to spend some time exploring The Northwest Mercantile; and everyone should walk through the peaceful and picturesque gardens. Need another reason why this pavilion is my favorite? Le Cellier! This is seriously one of the best restaurants at WDW property. Plus, one of World Showcase’s most popular entertainment groups, Off Kilter, can be found here!

So those are my Top 5 choices for my favorite World Showcase pavilions. What did you think? What is your favorite World Showcase pavilion?

It’s been a long, hard, war for the Disney Studios. They’ve had to fight against rival cartoon studios in the early days, and upstart
animation studios in recent years. But looking back into the world of live action, we must acknowledge that it was Disney who was the upstart!

Many asked if Walt Disney was serious when he decided to make live action films. And this skeptical talk only intensified over Disney’s choice of material. Animal documentaries? English period pieces? Sappy comedies?

No one would have picked Disney as the winner in live action films! As a matter of fact, Walt Disney did have trouble getting both the financing and the distribution for these earliest efforts. No one would take ‘The Cartoon King’ seriously.

And then one of his True Life Adventures won an Academy Award.

The competition was stunned! Walt wasn’t surprised and so soldiered on with even more unconventional content. Next, fully live action period pieces like Treasure Island and The Swiss Family Robinson became instant hits and are now enduring classics.

Next came the comedies. The Absent Minded Professor. Herbie the Love Bug. The Parent Trap. And many others. These films drew much criticism because of their hokey humor and sentimental messages. But did this mean a defeat for Disney? Not at all! All of these movies did good box office, and again, are still watched by millions today.

Would Disney be able to keep the momentum going? Again, Walt Disney died sometime during this period, and the live action division of his company suffered along with the cartoon and animation divisions.

The 1970’s and 1980’s yielded more of the same from the Disney live action division. A few notable films stand out, such as The Black Hole and Tron, but neither made a big enough impact at the time of their releases. But with the addition of Touchstone Pictures to the fold, Disney was free to get down and dirty with the competition! Films like Down And Out in Beverly Hills set a new tone for the studio, a tone that resonated with a whole new generation of moviegoers.

Disney was back in the battle! And back to win.

There are many live action films that likely come to your mind from the 1990’s and beyond. And although Disney can’t claim to be the all around best studio in the category of live action movies, they don’t have to apologize either. Far from it actually. For with the release of The Pirates of the Caribbean 3, Disney did what many other studios have never done: They grossed over 1 billion dollars with just one movie! (And if you’re still with me on the Triple Threat angle, they also grossed over 1 billion dollars with just one animated movie the same year, via Pixar.)

So in conclusion, Disney is the Triple Threat of the entertainment business. From endearing cartoon characters to enduring animation classics to blockbuster live action films, Disney stands in a class all its own.

Send up the white flag. Disney has won the war!

In 1937 the world of animation changed. A man named Walt Disney launched an 84 minute ‘cartoon’ called Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and in so doing, started a war that continues to this day!

Of course, the war took some time to really get going. For decades, no other studio was able to compete with Disney’s level of character animation and artistic execution. Many tried, but I challenge you to remember any of the earliest efforts!

It looked like the medium of feature-length animation would belong to only one studio. But then Walt Disney died.

To the credit of the animators left behind, they made a valiant effort to carry on. And many fine films still set the pace for other
animation studios. But it was inevitable that that would change. With better schools and the ‘legitimizing’ of drawing ‘cartoons’, other studios now had access to top rate animators.

The war began in earnest!

As with the cartoons though, the first volleys by the contenders were hit and miss. Many good attempts were made, but again, it is hard to remember them. But the 1970’s and early 1980’s were a time of creative stagnation for Disney, and this allowed other studios to creep up in the rankings. But I believe one of the first films that really put Disney on notice was Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant. For the first time, Disney may not have been losing the war, but they were starting to lose a few battles.

In more recent times, films like Shrek, Madagascar, Kung-Fu Panda, and Despicable Me, have wounded the great Disney Studio.

But have they defeated it?

Not by a long shot! In the late 1980’s, The Little Mermaid let the enemy know that Disney wasn’t going to surrender. A string of hits brought the studio back stronger than ever, albeit, with a few misfires.

Disney really cannot claim to make only ‘classics’, although it does. But it can claim to have two outstanding qualities for its
feature-length animation: Longevity and consistency. No matter what mistakes are made, Disney can be counted on to regroup and return to the top of the box office.

The recent disappointment over the reaction to The Princess and the Frog is a case in point, as it was followed up by the smash hit
Rapunzel.

Disney does it again! And thus cements the second part of the Triple Threat.

But the third part of the Triple Threat is the hardest for Disney to claim. Live action is perhaps the biggest battlefield of all, with
many more studios joining the fight.

How does Disney hold up against such powerhouses as Universal Studios? Find out in Part Three of this series entitled Disney
Versus: Live Action Studios.

The Triple Threat. In show business, this was a reference to a person who could sing, dance, and act. Other areas of entertainment, such as sports, have used the same terminology to indicate excellence in a given field of endeavor. This series of three articles is going to explore how the Walt Disney Studio has earned the right to be considered a Triple Threat.

Few studios are a one-stop viewing experience. They might do cartoons well, like Hanna Barbara. Or they might do feature-length animation well, like Sony Pictures. Or they might do live action well, like Universal Studios. But again, few can claim to have a strong foothold in all three fields. At best, maybe two.

Disney, since at least the 1950’s, can claim a strong presence in all three. But for the balance of this article, we will only consider how Disney stacks up against other cartoon studios, and those other studios that have dabbled in the medium.

In the 1920’s and 1930’s there were dozens of struggling cartoon studios. Most of them had one or two main stars, and, today, are only known for that limited contribution. Walt Disney could have become just such a studio. His first attempts at cartoons were crude, and honestly, just reworkings of what had already been done. Look at the background characters in the early Oswald cartoons, and you will see the same cast found in almost every cartoon of the time!

But then came Mickey Mouse and everything changed! Character. Sound. Color. Walt Disney was finally first and thus followed by others. His stable of stars grew far faster than other studios and most are still not only remembered today, but are also thriving.

There are, however, other cartoon studios that have given Disney a run for its money! Most notably is the Warner Brothers Studio. With a cast of zany characters in a series called Loony Toons, one rabbit has threatened a certain mouse for supremacy of the cartoon world! And Hanna Barbara virtually took television away from Disney with hits like The Flintstones, Huckleberry Hound, and the Jetsons, among others.

Yes, at times, Disney has had to take a back seat to other cartoon studios. But only at times. Overall, Disney has always been in the game, and usually near the front of the pack. And more often than not, well out in front.

Cartoons aren’t what they used to be. Starting out as filler, then becoming art, then a diversion for children, they are now
entertainment for adults. With ample adult content. Thankfully, Disney has opted to lose this battle, and left other studios to promote vulgarity within prime-time cartoons.

So how does the battle of Disney versus the other Cartoon Studios end? Who wins? For longevity and consistency, Disney takes the trophy. At times, another studio might hit one out of the park, but Disney has always won the game.

But what about in the battle of feature-length animation? Even though Disney made this art form popular, have they always been the leader of the medium? Find out in the second article of this series called Disney Versus: Animation Studios.

Most notable in a tour of Disney parks through the eyes of a history teacher, when you enter Animal Kingdom head right into Asia. This does not mean you should overlook the cultural and architectural accuracies in Africa (and the thousands of animals from these continents) as well as explore Rafiki’s Planet Watch to learn about the history of endangered species in our world.

When you arrive near Serka Zong, the Disney-created Nepalese village that houses Expedition Everest, you will see totems. These were handcarved in Nepal and imported to Walt Disney World. You will also notice that Imagineers focused on the culture of those in Nepal when building here. The rooftops have wood stacked on top of them to represent the wealth as Nepalese villagers in the Himalayas would (you could imagine findig wood up in the cold mountains would be tough). You will also see reference to the fear of these villages to the Yeti (Eep!!) when you see the red paint which is a traditional color of protection/warding off evil.

Finally, and possibly the most overlooked is the Buddha Eyes carved into a stone in Serka Zong. Buddhism is a peaceful belief system practiced throughout Asia and emphasizes finding enlightenment and ending personal suffering and desire.

It is amazing that Disney Imagineers plan each land, village, and attraction down to the flora, fauna, and even the rocks in order to make sure every minute detail transports you into the world they have created. Disney surely is in the details!

When you first enter Hollywood Studios, you may just be seeing the best piece of history. On your left you will see a shop named “Sid Cahuenga’s One of a Kind”. This pays homage to California’s Treaty of Mocahuenga. This document ended the Mexican-American war in California and was named for a village in California.

You will also see shops paying homage to real places in Hollywood such as Carthay Circle and Sunset Boulevard. What may be the most fun is within Hollywood Brown Derby which is a replica of the California restaurant in and of itself. The caricatures and signatures in the guest book are those of celebrities who have dined in the park and the original restaurant.

Mann’s Chinese Theater is also a replica of Hollywoods Grauman’s Chinese Theature. Before the Sorcerer Hat began the transformation from the old-hollywood theming of MGM to the current movie studio theming of Hollywood Studios this was the main center piece of the park.

Also be sure to check out the movie memorabilia and movie history that you can find in both The Great Movie Ride and Studio Backlot Tour. And of course, don’t dare miss the Walt Disney museum and show to be seen at the Walt Disney: One Man’s Dream attraction.

Before we go, do you know which attraction finds its home in the fictional Nepalese village of Serka Zong?

The only remaining tale to tell about World Showcase is something you can find represented in statues in both the Italy and Germany pavilions. In the heart of the Bavarian village in the Germany pavilion you will see the fountain with a statue atop. The statue depicts St. George slaying the dragon. Over in Italy you will find a variation of this tale in the statue of Theodore and the dragon (who most tales say accompanied George on his mission).

This is a fun tale to tell so lets begin. The German tradition tells of George’s dragon slaying in a set of poems called The Songs of St. George, but typically this is a European story from the time of the Crusades.

This website provides a nice intro to George and his tale. (Although it is a school site based in the UK, it seems to be the most straightforward.)

“St. George traveled for many months by land and sea until he came to Libya. Here he met a poor hermit who told him that everyone in that land was in great distress, for a dragon had long ravaged the country. ‘Every day,’ said the old man, ‘he demands the sacrifice of a beautiful maiden and now all the young girls have been killed. The king’s daughter alone remains, and unless we can find a knight who can slay the dragon she will be sacrificed tomorrow. The king of Egypt will give his daughter in marriage to the champion who overcomes this terrible monster.’

When St. George heard this story, he was determined to try and save the princess, so he rested that night in the hermit’s hut, and at daybreak set out to the valley where the dragon lived. When he drew near he saw a little procession of women, headed by a beautiful girl dressed in pure Arabian silk. Her attendants were leading the princess Sabra to the place of death. The knight spurred his horse and overtook the ladies. He comforted them with brave words and persuaded the princess to return to the palace. Then he entered the valley.

As soon as the dragon saw him it rushed from its cave, roaring with a sound louder than thunder. Its head was immense and its tail fifty feet long. But St. George was not afraid. He struck the monster with his spear, hoping he would wound it.

The dragon’s scales were so hard that the spear broke into a thousand pieces. and St. George fell from his horse. Fortunately he rolled under an enchanted orange tree against which poison could not prevail, so that the venomous dragon was unable to hurt him. Within a few minutes he had recovered his strength and was able to fight again.

He smote the beast with his sword, but the dragon poured poison on him and his armour split in two. Once more he refreshed himself from the orange tree and then, with his sword in his hand, he rushed at the dragon and pierced it under the wing where there were no scales, so that it fell dead at his feet.”

While some variations of the tale end here others mention his travel party (including Theordore) and some end with his marriage to the princess. There are princes defeating foes scattering throughout Walt Disney World, but where else but World Showcase can you teach the tale of a real man who walked this Earth and maybe, just maybe, did slay a dragon to save a princess??

During my Keys to the Kingdom tour this past November, I learned so many awesome details about the Magic Kingdom. This is another installment of the memories from that wonderful tour. Spoiler alert!

Walt Disney was a genius in many areas. One such area was his attention to detail. He always wanted everything to be perfectly represented in the park as design integrity was very important to him. If Walt didn’t know exactly how something should be represented he would gather a research team to study the facts to determine the most authentic design possible.

After Walt’s death, when the imagineers set out to design Liberty Square at Walt Disney World, they wanted to keep with Walt’s standard. This is the reason you will never find a restroom while strolling through Liberty Square.

If you eat at Columbia Harbour House, and you need to find the restroom, the cast members could tell you honestly, “I’m sorry but you will have to go to Fantasyland for that.” You see, if you go to the restroom inside Columbia Harbour House it is indeed located in Fantasyland. You might ask why this is. It is simply because there were no indoor toilets back in colonial times. Truth-be-known, the only reason there is one inside Columbia Harbour House at all is due to health regulations.

When visiting Walt Disney World, you have to always be on the lookout. Remember to look all around, up and down and everywhere. The magic of Disney is in the attention to detail. Another example of this can be found while strolling through Liberty Square. One might notice that the ground is brown in the center. It is meant to resemble a river – a river of sewage, I’m afraid, as in colonial times. Without indoor toilets, everyone collected their waste and then threw it out of their upper windows into the middle of the road. The brown gravel looking part of the pavement is a representation of that.

It is fascinating how much time has been spent on every aspect of Walt’s vision. There are new and exciting things to discover each time you visit. Plan a trip soon — you’ll be glad you did!

What better park to begin our historical tour than the Magic Kingdom? No matter what the discussion about Walt Disney World, this is always “the beginning”.

When you first enter Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom it is clear how Disney is in the details. As you begin your stroll down Main Street you will see gas street lamps on the streets. Continue walking towards the hub and the lights will move you forward through time and you will find electric lamps here. Just another way that Disney World just keeps you moving forward.

As you reach the hub the setting for this history lesson will be Liberty Square. The first thing you will notice as you enter this land is that you have most certainly turned up at a colonial “American” village. What changes about the ground here? Have you ever noticed the gravel section in the road here? If you had lived in colonial times this would have been your sewer. As your family walkes along the cobbles why not mention that had this been a real colonial town this would be filled with chamber pot waste and garbage that would have been thrown from houses. Ewwww!

Keep your eye out for Paul Revere’s famed “two if by sea” lanterns as you walk through this area as well! There may not be a replica of Christ Church here, but the lanterns represent those famous Revolutionary signals from April 18, 1775.

Also notice that clocks here with Roman numerals use “IIII” instead of “IV” which would be commonly used today, as this was the “4” of that time period.

Also, as a nod to my own home, each section of Liberty Square is supposed to represent different areas in America’s 13 original colonies. The Haunted Mansion area uses architectural cues from New York’s Hudson River Valley.

With a few notes in Disney history, be sure to look out for the Disney family’s coat of arms as you walk through either entrance through the castle. Also, as you leave the park take note of the often overlooked sign on the front of the train station that reads “Walt Disney World Railroad Office, Keeping Dreams on Track” with Walt’s name listed as Chief Engineer.

Here is a piece of trivia to keep you thinking until the Epcot installment:

Disney lore says that Walt loved his dog, Rover, so much he used his likeness in three different Magic Kingdom attractions. Can you name all three??

The Magic Kingdom post ended posing this question:

Disney lore says that Walt loved his dog, Rover, so much he used his likeness in three different Magic Kingdom attractions. Can you name all three??

If you said Pirates of the Caribbean, Carousel of Progress, and Haunted Mansion- you got it! (Although I think the Haunted Mansion was a tough one since there is so much going on in that ride!)

Moving along, lets monorail over to Epcot for a trip through history.

First stop is Spaceship Earth. As a World History teacher, this is one of my very favorite rides in all of the parks. I tell my students every year that I wish I could take them to Epcot because I just know it would bring history alive for them the way it does for me!

While you ride through Spaceship Earth you will find that the images and likeness are made as close as possible to those during this time. Michelangelo’s painting system, the hieroglyphics and papyrus in the Egypt scene… all accurate representations. Not only is the Printing Press in the Johan Gutenberg scene an exact replica, but it can really move! And the animatronic Gutenberg is holding a reproduction of the first thing ever printed on the first real printing press (a bible). Also (while I have not yet confirmed this) a guest during my last trip told me that when you reach the morse code scene the message being sent is headline news about the transcontinental railroad.

Now for the good stuff, lets talk about World Showcase.

Epcot’s World Showcase houses 11 distinct pavilions from 11 distinct countries around the globe. You will find people from all of these nations working in the shops and restaurants, authentic food and drink to enjoy, souvenirs to purchase, and artistry abound. The Disney imagineers took great care in keeping to the architectural integrity of the great nations whose pavilions can be found here.

Ever take a look at the towering ziggurat-like pyramid in Mexico? This was modeled after the Aztec temple for Quetzalcoatl, the god of wind and air. What about Akershus in Norway? This was modeled after a medieval castle with the same name built in Norway in 1299. Or the Eiffel Tower peaking out above France? Even though forced perspective design makes it seem larger this is a one-tenth scale replica of the real deal.

Keep walking until you reach the China pavilion where you will find a half size scale of the Temple of Heaven. Check out the Foo Dog statues out front- can you tell which one is the male and which the female?? Foo Dogs were commonly believed to have mythical powers of protection in imperial China.

As you continue through World Showcase be sure to point out the sixteen distinct coat of arms outside Sommerfest/Biergarten which represent the sixteen regions of Germany (you can also find these printed on shot glasses and steins in the shop nearby).

As you enter the Italy pavilion you will feel as though you have entered St Mark’s Square where real gold tops the bell towers and a replica of King Neptune adorns the back of the pavilion.

Looking to the Japan pavilion, you can’t miss the large red gateway. In the Shinto religion, this gate (called a torii) marks the entrance to a shrine or sacred place. While time has turned these into symbols of traditional Japan it is hard not to feel at piece with the light music, airy flowers, and ambiance of the coy ponds as you enter this pavilion. Here you will also be able to enter the oldest department store in the world Mitsokushi.

Continuing to the Morocco pavilion you will find a replica of a 12th century Minaret towering above the pavilion. You will also find that this is the only pavilion, which was commissioned by the country itself. The King of Morocco even sent his own architects to help in building and designing the pavilion authentically. For some time, they even returned to update the artistry.

When you make your way into the United Kingdom pavilion look out for some fun points here. First and foremost the cottage where you can find the tea shop is a replica of the home of William Shakespeare from Stratford-on-Avon. You will also see that the architecture is built larger on top than the first floor… this represents the medieval architectural design based on the fact that taxes were mainly based on square footage of your ground floor. Therefore citizens often built their second floors larger than the first. And when you move on and reach Canada try and spot the Maple Trees (paying homage to the national symbol).

With the World Showcase being a plethora of historical knowledge I will save the best for last (and the next post) lets just say it involves a knight, a princess, a dragon, and is immortalized in TWO World Showcase pavilions. Do you know which ones?
