A new Express Ticket Purchase entrance turnstile has opened at Disneyland, allowing guests to purchase theme park tickets right at the gate and avoid making an additional stop at the ticket booths.

Visitors simply swipe their credit card and get a ticket printed out for them at the gate.

Tickets available at the Express Ticket Purchase line are the one-day Disneyland ticket for adults ($72), children ($62) and seniors; the one-day Park Hopper ticket for adults ($97) and children ($87); and the two-day Park Hopper ticket for adults ($151) and children ($131).

“We began testing this new service during the holiday season, and the feedback from guests has been very positive,” said Disneyland Resort spokeswomen Betsy Sanchez. “We’re going to evaluate it at the end of the test and see how it works for our future plans.”

Captain EO, the 3D film starring the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, is returning to Disneyland for a limited time starting in February, Disney announced today.

It’s the first time Disney has confirmed rumors of the films return, rumors that have been flying since shortly after Jackson died in June.

The 17-minute film will return to its original home at the theater inside Tomorrowland, replacing Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, which currently occupies the theater and is expected to close in the next few weeks, Disneyland spokeswoman Suzi Brown said.

Disney officials call it a limited engagement. Brown said how limited has yet to be decided.

This is an entertainment experience that our guests are excited about and were happy to be bringing it back,Brown said.

The film was a mainstay at the park from 1986 to 1997, finally closing after its popularity faded. Jackson also was facing molestation charges, starting in 1993, which prompted some people to question the appropriateness of the film playing inside the family friendly theme park.

When asked about the criminal allegations and whether that was considered in deciding whether to bring it back, Brown would only say: The decision was made based on our guests feedback and there was much guest nostalgia and demand for Captain EO.

A powerhouse team from the entertainment industry created Captain EO,including Star Wars creator George Lucas, who served as executive producer. It was directed by Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola, with music from film composer James Horner and from Jackson.

Press reports said the film cost an estimated $17 million to $30 million to make.

Disneyland’s Rivers of America set to be drained

Right after the holiday season, visitors to Disneyland will find a dry Rivers of America.

The river is scheduled to be drained beginning Jan. 4 and won’t be filled up again until May, according to officials with the theme park.

While the river is drained, many Disney fans would like to see something done to add some new life to the Rivers of America and the slow ride on the Mark Twain Riverboat and Sailing Ship Columbia, which some find a little boring.

“They’re only boring to the extent that much of the current view from the ships consists of very large trees and scenes that are old and static,” said Werner Weiss, curator of Yesterland.com.

Some of those scenes include a variety of wildlife statues, an Indian Village and the settler’s cabin.

The settler’s cabin has seen most of the changes. It used to be known as the “burning settler’s cabin.” The back story was that it was set afire by American Indians. At one time there was a dead settler in front of the cabin.

Disney Candy Canes Returning to Disneyland

The 35-year tradition of making fresh candy canes is set to return Friday December 4th to Disneyland.

Disneyland guests often line up for the chance to buy a limited number of the newly made sweets. Others crowd around the windows to watch teams of candy makers stretch the liquid-like sugar into hook shapes.

The canes are in such high demand that Disneyland workers plan to hand out tickets on a first-come, first-served basis so guests can return at fixed times to buy a maximum of two canes each, said John McClintock, a Disneyland Resort spokesman. There will be a stand-by line in case guests with tickets don’t come back.

Canes cost $9.95 each.

Makers usually create up to 135 canes, prepared in three batches, in a day at the Candy Palace and Candy Kitchen on Main Street U.S.A. Each cane is wrapped in bubble wrap.

The canes are about the length of a forearm.

Disneyland-goers can find out when candy canes are being made by calling a special phone number, updated each Sunday with information about what kind of candy is being made each day that week. The Candy Kitchen Menu line is 714-781-0112.

Candy makers restrict the number of canes because of the intense heat — between 90 and 100 degrees — needed to melt and mold the goo.

Fun candy cane facts:

  • It takes two hours to produce each batch.
  • Each batch makes between 40 to 45 canes.
  • A team of three candy makers create the canes in a heat-sealed kitchen.
  • Cooking time is about a half hour.
  • Pulling time is about an hour.
  • A block of candy weighs 15 pounds.
