Opening this February at Walt Disney World is the all new game Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom.

In this role-playing game, guests become Merlin’s apprentice sorcerers and embark on a quest to stop more than 20 Disney villains – including Hades and Cruella De Vil – from stealing one of the four shattered pieces of Merlin’s crystal ball. Armed with spells in the form of special cards, guests search for the magic symbols that lead them to villains’ hiding places in Adventureland, Fantasyland, Frontierland, and Main Street, U.S.A. Once there, apprentices use magic keys to reveal a villain’s hideout and use spell cards to stop them in their tracks.

According to the game’s developers, the cards really are the secret weapons of the game. There will be 70 different spell cards available and guests will receive five complimentary cards when they play. Each card features a different Disney character that offers a spell unique to him or her. Guests can use more than one card simultaneously, casting multiple spells at a villain at one time.

Some of the cards you may encounter include:

• Lumière’s Candle Blast – This card shows Belle’s favorite candlestick spurred on by his loyal ally, Cogsworth.
• Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride – This card shows Mr. Toad’s car careening through the underbrush.
• Prince Naveen’s Army of Frogs – This card shows Tiana’s prince enchanting his amphibian army to action.
• Rafiki’s Wisdom Stick – This card shows Simba’s counselor ready to imbue some knowledge on the enemy’s forehead.
• The Woozles’ Woozle Nightmare – This card shows a Woozle dreaming of his most delightful vision: A gang of other Woozles ready to bang some noggins.

We do have some additional details for guests who want to collect or trade these cards. The 70 cards are divided into nine different spell classes, such as Princess cards, Hero cards or Warrior cards. In addition, all cards are marked with one of three designations – a star symbol, which indicates a rare card; a moon symbol, which signifies an uncommon card; and a planet symbol, which indicates a common card.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom will debut in late February and is included in the cost of theme park admission.

Disney Publishing Worldwide recently announced that two more storybook app titles based on the original Marvel Origins series will join “The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story” app, which launched last month. With the success of Epic Mickey last year it is no surprise that Disney is working on an all new Epic Mickey Game! While still focusing on the darker side of Disney there is expected to be a few welcomed changes.

From what I heard is Epic Mickey 2 will include co-op play, with one player controlling Mickey Mouse and the other controlling Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.

While Mickey’s gameplay will remain similar to the first game, Oswald will allegedly be able to fly and possibly shoot electricity too.

If you remember the first game was exclusive to the Wii. Disney Interactive Studios has learned their lesson this time around and plans to bring it to both the Xbox and PS3!

Expect to see EM2 around fall of 2012

Bottom line
This app is an interactive storybook app where you can go through the verses of the iconic Disney song “It’s a Small World” and trigger different sounds and animations using the touchscreen. Fans of the Disney Park attraction will no doubt enjoy the tribute to the classic art presentation and the memorable soundtrack. The younger set will enjoy activating the sounds of the various animals and children sounding much like their theme park counterparts.

Two cool features to note is the way you can select the various parts of the world using the rotating wheel icon. As a parent it could unlock a world of opportunities to talk about different countries and cultures. Too much education you say? I think not. What a great gateway into the greater world making a great experience for both the child and parent. The final scene of the worldwide trip gives the reader a chance to hear “hello” as said by the featured culture’s language as well as choreograph your own fireworks display.

If you don’t mind hearing the tune over and over in your head, and yes, you will be humming it all day after using this app and enjoy a virtual trip on “The Happiest Cruise That Ever Sailed” than this app is for you. Great training for your kids as you prepare them for your next visit to Epcot’s World Showcase.

This app is designed for both iPhone and iPad and is $3.99 USD and is rated for 4 years and up.

The Muppet Mail Home Screen

I was fortunate to be able to review the iPad app Muppet Mail for Chip and Company.  This app is available at the iTunes App Store, and I have been enjoying playing with the app to learn the ins and outs of it.

In it’s most basic form, Muppet Mail is a way of sending Muppet e-cards to people via email or Facebook.  However, there are so many more layers to this app, so let’s talk about the details in this app.

Muppet Mail lets you create e-cards starting with a character first, or starting with an occasion.  Additionally, you can take a picture, and make your own Muppet!  In this way, you can answer the age old question “Am I a man (or woman), or am I a Muppet?”  I guess you could say that you are both with this app!

Here is just some of the things that you can do with Muppet Mail:

• Create e-cards based on various special occasions.  I created one for my sister-in-law and her husband to celebrate their 25th anniversary!
• Create your own cards based on Muppets that currently exist, or Muppets that you create.  You can add special stamps on the cards, text, even make your own Muppets and give them things to say!
• You can take a picture of someone, or load one from your photo album, and turn that picture into a Muppet!  Or you can create your own Muppet by picking a body style, head, eyes, etc.

There are only a couple of things that I would change about the Muppet Mail app, and they are really quite minor changes.  One thing I would change is that, when you are creating a Muppet, you can only choose one accessory to go with the Muppet.  For example, I could choose a necklace, or I could choose a hat, but I couldn’t choose both.  That is something I would change.  Another thing that I would change is that there are a ton of fonts that you can choose from for text that you put into a card that you might be creating, but the one thing that isn’t in there is Walt Disney font.  I would put that font into the app as a selection to choose from — it is a Disney app, after all!

I have had a great time reviewing this app, and I highly recommend it for anyone with an iPad.  To purchase Muppet Mail, just click on the link to head to the iTunes Store!

Disney and Microsoft announced a new Disney*Pixar game called “Kinect Rush: A Disney*Pixar Adventure,” exclusively on Xbox 360, to be released on March 20, 2012.

Players can now travel to the Dark Dimension to fight the fearsome flame-headed Dormammu in the “Dormammu Mia!” mission, defeat the unstoppable Juggernaut in “All for Jugger-Naught” or take on Doctor Doom’s evil forces in multiplayer action missions.  Trick out a deck to battle friends and foes alike in the collectible Card Game! Marvel Super Hero Squad Online players can also blow off some steam with Arcade minigames like “Whack-A-Moloid”, “Base Invasion” and “Night Patrol” or earn unique heroes leveling up their Squad through the newly released Challenge System.

Players can also explore the many and varied game environments like Doctor Doom’s “Villainville”, soar through the towers in “Baxter Plaza”, swing from the World Tree in “Asgard” or climb to the top of the “Daily Bugle”. The selection of characters leaves no wish unfulfilled.  In the coming months, additional Super Heroes from Marvel’s library of over 8,000 will be available!

Fans can play entirely for free or subscribe to unlock additional Super Heroes, cards, missions and rooms for their headquarters. Spin the Prize Wheel for additional in-game Gold, Silver and items. Visitors to Walt Disney World can now search for hidden Mickeys using their Kindles, iPads, or smart phones.

The publisher of Steven M. Barrett’s book, Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide To Walt Disney World’s Best Kept Secrets, has made the fifth edition of the best-selling guide available in a variety of digital formats. The book recently made its debut on Amazon’s list of Top Ten Florida ebooks.

For the uninitiated, hidden Mickeys are partial or complete images of Mickey Mouse concealed throughout the parks’ attractions, restaurants, shops, and resorts. What began as an inside joke by Disney’s Imagineers and designers has become a major activity of visitors to “the Happiest Place on Earth” and a passion for more than a few of them.

Barrett’s book provides clues to Mickey’s hiding places and families and friends team up to search them out, competing for points in the process. There is also a section of hints for those who need extra help in their search.

The ebook version takes full advantage of the electronic format, providing hyperlinks from the clues to the hints and back again. And because ereaders allow users to search for any ride or attraction, there’s no need for an index.

Disney Publishing Worldwide’s new iPhone App “Don’t Let the Pigeon Run this App!” by three-time Caldecott Honor winner Mo Willems is great for children of all ages!

The App is available for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and touts several interactive features that makes it a stand out among other typical children’s book apps. Users “create their own adventure” by selecting various story element icons for use as the story unfolds. This customization feature will supply your kids with plenty of replay value. Another interactive element of the app allows the user to voice certain plot keywords Mad Libs style for playback during the story. That is one of my favorite features. Last, but not least author Mo Willems, takes you through a step-by-step tutorial on how to sketch the star of the story, the Pigeon. You will even be able to save your Pigeon drawing (as well as anything else you can sketch) in your iPhone’s camera roll.

If you’re a fan of Willems’ books the app will not disappoint. There are several cameos of his popular characters as well as a “read along” feature so parents and children can read along together or turn the Willems voice over off completely for a more traditional story time.

The only draw back is the actual drawing section of the app. As a pretty decent sketch artist myself I found using my finger to draw the Pigeon a bit cumbersome on the iPhone screen. Users would be better served by using a screen shield and a stylus to sketch out things. Secondly the use of motion control by way of shaking the screen to interact with the Pigeon only works during the introduction of the story. These are just minor drawbacks but not enough to detract from picking up this app.

“Interactivity has always been a key to the Pigeon books,” said Willems. “‘Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App!’ takes that interactivity to the point where the child is not only the audience, but the author as well. I can’t wait to see what awesome ideas kids will come up with. They’re going to put the Pigeon through the wringer!”

As a new fan of Willems books’ style, art and characters I’m sure you’ll find this app to be charming and a good way to pass the time with your young ones.
