Robert Downey Jr. Talks about Upcoming Marvel Studios Movies

iron man robert downey jr Robert Downey Jr. Talks about Upcoming Marvel Studios Movies %tag

A great article from Screen Rant talking about Robert Downey Jr. giving his take on Chris Evans as Captain America, as well as the upcoming Thor and Avengers movies.

Here are a few excerpts:

Given that his portrayal of Tony Stark/Iron Man has been met with pretty much universal approval by moviegoers of all creeds, Downey’s opinion about Chris Evans being cast as Captain America will definitely weigh heavily with the general fanboy/fangirl community.

Fortunately – for Evans – Downey seems quite enthusiastic about the decision:

“I do know [Evans] and I think it was a very smart casting choice.  I know that it was a difficult choice for both the studio to make and for him personally, having been involved in other franchises [like Fantastic Four] before.  But if I had to venture a guess, I think he’ll count himself as lucky and he’ll have a good time.”

and

Finally, Downey shockingly revealed that his involvement in The Avengers was not a done deal yet – feel free to roll your eyes in bemusement my fellow readers – but that he’s not exactly thinking about that at the moment.

But what does Downey make of the rumors about Joss Whedon helming The Avengers?  Well, he surprisingly confessed that he’s “not very familiar with the guy” but that “I will let Marvel make whatever decisions they deem appropriate.”

Marvel Studios “Iron Man 2″ Opens at Top Spot in Overseas Markets

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 2″ launched internationally Wednesday with No. 1 openings in six markets for a total box-office gross of $2.2 million from 960 venues.

That represented an auspicious per-screen tally of $2,292, considered an encouraging average for the territories involved. France led the way for distributor Paramount, contributing $1.6 million on a day marked by the balmiest temperatures of the year locally.

The Robert Downey Jr.-starring action adventure also unspooled in Sweden, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands and French-speaking Switzerland, with additional territories to bow the picture over the weekend.

Paramount didn’t break down first-day territorial grosses but said the opening in France was 11 percent ahead of the comparable opening figure of 2008′s “Iron Man,” which premiered “on the eve of a public holiday.”

The original “Iron Man” grossed of $265 million internationally and $318.3 million domestically.

Beginning Thursday, Paramount debuts “Iron Man 2″ in 55 overseas markets, including such heavyweight territories as the United Kingdom, Australia, Korea, Russia, Germany, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, Spain and Hong Kong.

Paramount rushed “Iron Man 2″ into the foreign market a week before the film’s May 7 domestic bow to provide the movie longer theatrical play before the monthlong World Cup begins in South Africa on June 11. The most widely watched sports event in the world, the soccer tournament draws a huge male viewership, a key demographic group for the “Iron Man” sequel and many other summer releases.

Paramount, which handled the original “Iron Man,” is distributing the movie, but the sequel represents the first Marvel theatrical release since Disney acquired the company.

Marvel & Disney Come together for Iron Man 2 Premiere

A major theme of “Iron Man 2” is the churn and burn of public life — billionaire superhero Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is living large but he’s also being poisoned by his celebrity, his past and, yes, even by that bright glowing disc in his chest that keeps his heart going even as it taints his blood.

So, because of the mad public-life theme, the Hollywood premiere for the movie on Monday was big, brash, loud and crazy at the edges. (It was also an interesting moment in the life of Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Entertainment, which walked down their first public red carpet together with the tentative hand-holding that you might expect any arranged marriage.)

The premiere shut down Hollywood Boulevard and hundreds of fans and tourists turned out to gawk at the movie stars, the scantily clad cheerleaders in red-and-gold (they’re called the “Ironettes”) and the assembled press, which rearranged schedules to attend the affair — this premiere was supposed to be in London but the nasty ash cloud from that Icelandic volcano changed those plans. Yes, it sounds like a comic-book plot twist but isn’t that appropriate? I’m not sure I would have been surprised Monday if Mickey Rourke shed his leather-lapeled suit and attacked the crowd with crackling laser whips. He didn’t however, although at one point he did give his agent the slip; in the lobby of the El Capitan Theatre, ICM President Chris Silbermann walked up to a group of reporters and asked (with only mock distress), “Where’s Mickey? Have you seen Mickey? I went to the bathroom and I came back and he wasn’t in his seat.” The star was located and guided to an elevated stage outside, where “Iron Man 2″ director and costar Jon Favreau introduced his cast before fireworks were launched.

Downey had arrived with an appropriate bit of James Bond flair by zipping up a narrow, blocked-off lane in a souped-up, soft-top white Audi R8 Spyder. He stopped curbside, hopped out to open the door for his wife and producer partner, Susan Downey (she’s the executive producer of “Iron Man 2″). It’s amazing to watch Downey these days  along with Johnny Depp, he’s ascended to a star level that no one anticipated a decade and although Depp loses himself in the disguise of his roles,  “Iron Man” succeeds by bottling its star’s singular charisma and bad-boy background and presenting it as meta-entertainment.
