X-Men #1

Then mark July 8th on your calendar!  It is going to be Marvel’s X-Men day!!!  That’s right, a whole new X-Men #1 will start a new chapter in the mainstream X-Men story.  This is extremely exciting news for X-Men fans.  Some X-Men fans have felt Marvel has given the X-Men a “back-seat” as of late.  This new project is meant to be mainstream and up-front, just like the new push for the Avengers!

The project itself is being written by none other than Victor Gischler!  With his work on fan favorites like Deadpool, The Punisher, and Wolverine this is going to get a lot of attention.  Artwork will be lead by Paco Medina who has been red hot recently with Deadpool.  This seems to prove Marvel is putting a lot of weight and effort behind revitalizing their X-Men.  Be sure to check out all the variant covers, I know I’m excited about this new push for the X-Men!

IGN Shares with us some really cool Iron Man Variant Covers:

For months many have wondered when we’d see Disney and Marvel start to work together. While we’ve seen Marvel merch start to show up at Disney theme parks, an announcement from Marvel Comics today elevates the collaboration and corporate synergy one step further. Pixar is taking a stab at the Golden Avenger.

For months Marvel has been unveiling a flood of Iron Man variant covers. Decorating just about every major release for the past couple months, Marvel has called upon a wide, wide variety of comic book artists to do “alternate universe” takes on Iron Man. Dubbed “Iron Man by Design 2.0″ variants, these ideas range from Gladiator Iron Man to iconic, stylish takes on the current iteration of the character. Marvel’s latest variants do the same, but summon two of Pixar’s concept artists, Ronnie del Carmen and Bill Presing, for the task. Del Carmen has worked as Story Supervisor, Storyboard Artist and Character Designer on such films as Finding Nemo and Wall-E. Presing has contributed to Up and Ratatouille as a Storyboard Artist.

Avengers #1

If you missed it, Marvel deemed May 19th, 2010 “Avenger’s Day.”  Many comic book shops celebrated with the release of the newly created Avengers comic that starts at #1.  I visited two different comic book shops, and I can say first hand there was a lot of buzz about Avengers Day!  I even witnessed strict DC Comics fans picking up Avengers items!  As for the new book, there are several variant covers out there and I’m sure some of them will catch a higher price.  Not only does this issue usher in the new Avengers series, it also helps kick start “The Heroic Age” story arc from Marvel.  This new book is only one of FOUR new books being released with the Avengers moniker.  In the coming months Marvel will also release the reboot (or vol. 2) of New Avengers, Secret Avengers, and Avengers Academy.

It certainly looks like Marvel is making the Avengers franchise the “center” of the Marvel universe.  This is somewhat fitting given the recent popularity of the New Avengers and Mighty Avengers books done by Brian Michael Bendis.  The insane success of the Iron Man movies and the palpable anticipation of the Thor and Captain America movies are also adding to this new push by Marvel for the Avengers franchise.

As well Marvel is doing some interesting advertisement for the new story arc and Avengers releases.  It’s called “I am an Avenger” and attempts to capture some of that old comic magic by involving the readers and fans.  Breaking the “fourth wall” has long been what comic books could achieve that other forms of media could not.  This advertisement campaign attempts to tap into some of that.  Check it out: I am an Avenger.
