Disney Food Confession: S’mores from the 50s Prime Time Cafe.

Where to find it:  At the 50s Prime Time Cafe at Disney Hollywood Studios.

What is it? That classic campfire combination of graham crackers topped with melted marshmallow drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Why you want it:  Because the crisp, almost burnt, caramelized exterior hides a warm gooey center.  Just in case that wasn’t decadent enough, it’s covered in chocolate.  It’s enough to make even confirmed marshmallow hater like me say “Oh, well maybe just this once.  Or twice.”  You know,  just to be polite.

Good Eats! Boma – Flavors of Africa with recipes

BOMA1 300x213 Good Eats! Boma Flavors of Africa with recipes %tag

One of my favorite table service restaurants is Boma – Flavors of Africa, which can be found at my favorite resort, the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Breakfast here is standard fare, but dinner time comes alive with a traditional African buffet that is full of authentic flavors and tempting varieties. To me, the dark wood and low lighting of the Animal Kingdom Lodge is so inviting and comfortable. I love the ambiance as well as the food, service and unique Disney style found here.

Boma is a non-character dining experience but you are free to explore to the savannah viewing area outside the main lobby either before or after dinner and see some beautiful animals typical to the African region. Boma and Jiko share a common area, so it can get a little crowded at check-in but they seem to have the system down and will offer you a pager to carry with you while you explore or have a seat, if available.

Once you are seated, your server will soon arrive to take your drink orders and explain how the buffet works. I always drink the Jungle Juice as it is super refreshing and tasty.  The server will explain that the buffet is broken into pods: soups, salads, breads and hummus, meats – you get the idea, and there are many choices at  each pod. There is a section which contains normal, American foods for the less-adventurous kids, but they are also welcome to try some new things in a nonthreatening atmosphere as the foods at Boma are not extremely exotic nor strange.

Please note that I have found that the buffet menu changes but the foods are always delicious.

A special note for anyone with food allergies: the ingredient lists of the food items are not displayed and several items, such as the salmon, contain nuts so please request a walk-through with the chef when you get there if you have allergies. They are happy to assist and we want you to be safe rather than sorry.

Oh, did you say dessert? One of my favorite WDW desserts of all time is Zebra Domes. I absolutely never turn them down. The Boma also serves warm desserts, such as a wonderful Banana and Butterscotch Pudding and a Fruit Cobbler.

Both the food quality and service are exceptional at this table service restaurant in my opinion. If you are staying at the AKL or just looking for a great dining experience, you will not be disappointed. Being a Texan, we fell in love with the Pork Ribs and delicious sauces. I asked the waiter if I could have the recipes and, true to Disney form, they were happy to accommodate. They took my name and address and within a week I was mailed the recipes on beautiful stationery. Because I love sharing, here they are. Enjoy!

Disney World Quick Tips – Disney Food for Less

tongatoast 300x225 Disney World Quick Tips Disney Food for Less %tag

Planning, Budgeting, and Saving for Walt Disney World Vacations are a way of life at the Chip and Co Household. I am constantly looking for ways to save some extra money so I can make yet another trip to our home away from home.

Today I am going to teach you some Quick Tips and tricks to really maximize your money while still taking full advantage of the food at the Walt Disney World Resort.

  • We all love Kona Cafe. I for one fell in love with Tonga Toast. But did you know just downstairs in the Polynesian Resort at Captain Cooks you can get Tonga Toast for a lot less. Great to grab when you are in a hurry. As you can see in the picture above the menu is pretty limited and there is no Kona Coffee.
  • Starring Rolls Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is my favorite snack shop in all of Walt Disney World. I have confirmed this from several sources that if you ask one of the Cast Members behind the counter would it be possible to get a piece of Grapefruit Cake from the Hollywood Brown Derby if they are not to busy they will walk over and grab you a piece. I would be very polite and not get upset if they don’t have the time to do it. I am going to try this on our next trip and let you know how it goes.
  • Every time we have gone to Sassagoula Floatworks and Food Factory at the Port Orleans Resort it has not been busy. What would make me venture all the way out to this resort you might ask? The Beignets of course! Hot, fresh, and delicious! They are a very inexpensive treat and a good way to start the day.
  • Boma at the Animal Kingdom Lodge is my favorite buffet. I love the fusion of Asian and Indian cuisine. Having good friends who are from South Africa we have tried many of these dishes before ever eating here. One dessert talked about a ton all over the internets is the Zebra Domes. But how can you get some ZD’s without having to get the full buffet at Boma’s? Stop by Mara’s of course! Stop by and pick some up to take back to your room for later icon smile Disney World Quick Tips Disney Food for Less %tag
  • Another trick you can try is goto restaurants that serve a la carte or have a menu you can order from. Split appetizers or find where they serve up a fruit trey and split it. For example at the Grand Floridian Cafe you can easily split several items or meals to save money.
  • Drink water instead of Pop, Juice, or Coffee. Bring Mio Water Enhancers to flavor up your water or Star Bucks makes single serving packets to make your own coffee. If you ask any server at a Table Service restaurants for hot water they will bring it for you free of charge.

Well that is all I have for now. These are some of the tricks I use when I visit Walt Disney World. Our next trip we are paying out of pocket so I really need to stretch our dollar much further than previous vacations where we did the Disney Dining Plan.

If you have any Quick Tips let me know in the comment box below.
