RIP Star Wars Concept Artist Ralph McQuarrie – June 13, 1929 – March 3, 2012

RalphMcQuarrie2 362x400 RIP Star Wars Concept Artist Ralph McQuarrie June 13, 1929 – March 3, 2012 %tag

Ralph McQuarrie, the man credited with bringing director George Lucas’ vision for “Star Wars” to the big screen, has died at the age of 82.

Ralph McQuarrie (June 13, 1929 – March 3, 2012) was a conceptual designer and illustrator who designed the original Star Wars trilogy, the original Battlestar Galactica TV series, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Cocoon, for which he won an Academy Award.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of such a visionary artist and such a humble man. Ralph McQuarrie was the first person I hired to help me envision Star Wars. His genial contribution, in the form of unequaled production paintings, propelled and inspired all of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy. When words could not convey my ideas, I could always point to one of Ralph’s fabulous illustrations and say, ‘Do it like this.’

“Beyond the movies, his artwork has inspired at least two generations of younger artists—all of whom learned through Ralph that movies are designed. Like me, they were thrilled by his keen eye and creative imagination, which always brought concepts to their most ideal plateau. In many ways, he was a generous father to a conceptual art revolution that was born of his artwork, and which seized the imaginations of thousands and propelled them into the film industry. In that way, we will all be benefiting from his oeuvre for generations to come. Beyond that, I will always remember him as a kind and patient, and wonderfully talented, friend and collaborator.”

—George Lucas

The Force is getting even stronger at LEGOLAND® California as it adds a LEGO® Star Wars Gallery and expands the popular LEGO Star Wars Miniland! On Saturday, March 3 in Atascadero, and Saturday, March 10 in San Francisco, the family theme park is invading the Galaxy Colony10 Theater and the Westfield San Francisco Centre unveiling: a life-size LEGO Darth Maul; several three-foot tall LEGO models of favorite Star Wars characters such as Princess Leia, Han Solo, Boba Fett and Wicket; sample scenes from LEGO Star Wars Miniland; an opportunity to meet a LEGOLAND Master Model Builder plus chances to win tickets to LEGOLAND California Resort by answering Jedi Trivia!

At LEGOLAND California, guests can already enjoy seven of the most famous scenes from the six live-action Star Wars movies, as well as a scene from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars all made out of 1.5 million LEGO bricks and built in 1:20 scale. But on March 29, Star Wars and LEGO fans alike will be delighted to find even more detail in each episode. For example, in the Naboo area, guests will discover an “underwater” scene featuring an opee sea killer as it pursues Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Jar Jar Binks as they try to reach the city of Theed. Other new LEGO models include a Jawa sandcrawler in the Tatooine scene; Rebels caught in a net trap set by Ewoks on Endor; and a new crystal tower standing more than 6-feet-tall on Christophsis.

For the first time, guests will be further immersed into the Star Wars experience as they walk through the LEGO Star Wars Gallery encountering LEGO “friends”, similar to giant mini-figures, from each episode. Each LEGO model will be 3-feet-tall and displayed on a podium for guests to get an up-close look. The 12 characters feature: Wicket, Princess Leia, R2-D2, Clone Captain Rex, Darth Vader, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Anakin, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Yoda and Darth Maul. In fact, two new Darth Maul LEGO models will be introduced in honor of the release of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace in 3D in February, 2012. One of the Darth Maul models will stand in the LEGO Star Wars Gallery while the other LEGO model will be life-sized, posed in a combat position grasping his double-bladed lightsaber in one hand and reaching forward with the other.
