According to recently released data from comScore Media Metrix, Disney Online, the No. 1 ranked community-family and parenting destination on the Web, reached a record-breaking 36 million unique visitors in July, beating the previous all-time record of 34 million uniques set in June 2009 by two million unique visitors. This growth was in great part due to increased traffic to areas of the site such as Disney Games, Disney Channel and Disney Movies. Most notably, Disney Games climbed to the No. 3 spot in the Online Gaming category.

Traffic growth highlights include:

  • Strong interest in online games (+6% vs. prior month), due to the wide variety in Disney Online’s portfolio of casual games and virtual worlds. Among Disney virtual worlds, Club Penguin continued to be the most popular on the Web (based on monthly traffic), while Toontown Online had a 64% increase in unique visitors and Disney Fairies Pixie Hollow saw an 80% lift month-over-month.
  • High traffic numbers to Disney Movies (+27% vs. prior month) due to the popularity of movies such as “Toy Story 3”
  • Disney.com’s unique programming and special events drew increased traffic and participation from guests, including Disney’s “U Rock” user-generated music video promotion and the launch of the Create portal’s new Group Wall feature, an online mosaic that enabled thousands of guests to create and share original pieces of art
  • Unique visitors in July represent a 16% increase from the prior month

“The online environment sets a very competitive landscape, making record-breaking traffic numbers like these a tremendous achievement,” stated Paul Yanover, executive vice president and managing director, Disney Online. “Year after year, our traffic growth demonstrates our dedication to delivering innovative content and guest engagement, making Disney Online an unparalleled destination for kids and families on the Web.”

In addition to its record-breaking Web traffic, Disney Online continues to lead the way in the online video and mobile Web sectors.

  • Disney Online’s reach of the Web video viewing population came in at an all-time high of 14%.
  • Disney Online achieved a record-breaking amount of video streams with kids ages 6-14 (56.4 million).
    • In the mobile space, Disney reached new milestones in July in great part due to the traffic driven by games and apps including, Toy Story, Camp Rock 2 and Radio Disney.
    • Mobile video views and game starts reached new highs in July with 1.9 million views and 900,000 game starts.
    • The Disney app recently surpassed 1 million downloads, with an app engagement rate 14% higher than the average entertainment app.

Disney/Pixar just launched the brand new virtual world World of Cars Online yesterday, August 11, at the launch event at Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank, CA. I was lucky enough to be there.

I’ve already written a post about the event, but now it’s time to focus on World of Cars itself

I’m 18-years-old, a bit out of the age range that World of Cars is aiming at, but I can say that I am having a blast playing with it. It’s also great that there are 40 different servers to play on. Does the server you’re playing on have too much traffic? Go ahead and switch over to another one, such as Hatchback, Biofuel, Shocks, Nozzle, Chrome, and the many others to choose from.

To start off, a new user must create his or her very own car. This was fun for me because you’re able to customize everything, from the numbers on your side panels all the way to your car’s name. There are so many different names to choose from, the combinations are endless! My little purple car is named Mia Brightcap.

Once your car is finished and your account is set up, you’re off to explore the regions of Carburetor County — Downtown Radiator Springs, Fillmore’s Fields, Willy’s Butte and Redhood Valley.

In the virtual world, you can interact with the characters from the film, such as Lightning McQueen and Mater. They’ll give you quests to fulfill and in exchange you’ll receive money, which can be used to purchase upgrades and modifications for your car. You also have your own yard to decorate so your friends can see.

There are also fun activities and games to play. All regions offer a racetrack to race other players. In Fillmore’s Fields, you can help him make his organic fuels at Fillmore’s Fuel Mixin’ Area, Man. You can also do what Mater loves most, tractor tipping.

In Downtown Radiator Springs, you can blast away enemies in Lightning Storm Space Assault (top), or help Ramone paint cars in Ramone’s Paint Blaster (my personal favorite game).

Players also have the ability to establish their own racing career, trying their hardest to make it all the way to the Piston Cup!

There is also a section for parents where they can learn more about the game as well as set their child’s community settings.

World of Cars Online offers a free to play option, as well as additional features which can be accessed by “sponsored” players, or users with a paid subscription. The subscription costs $5.95 per month. Get out there and start racing!

Disney Welcomes Rookie Racers to Its Newest Virtual World of Cars Online

Racers – log onto your computers – and start your engines! Disney*Pixar World of Cars Online (www.world of cars.com), a new online virtual world for kids based on the hit animated movie “Cars,” debuted to fans, car enthusiasts and the press on Wednesday, as announced by Disney Online Studios, a unit of the Disney Interactive Media Group.

The World of Cars Online premiere event featured celebrity guests Cheech Marin and Jenifer Lewis, voices of “Ramone” and “Flo” from the Disney*Pixar animated feature “Cars” and new online video game, as well as Disney Channel stars, the Road Kings classic car club and other Hollywood families and fans. The event was held at California historical landmark, Bob’s Big Boy restaurant in Burbank, a real life example of the 1950s style “car hop” coffee shop, reminiscent of Radiator Springs’ Flo’s V-8 Cafe depicted in the “Cars” movie and virtual world.

“Our goal with World of Cars Online is to provide a creative and social environment where kids can have fun and use their imaginations in new ways,” says Lane Merrifield, executive vice president of Disney Online Studios. “Our teams worked tirelessly to ensure World of Cars Online authentically represents the characters and storylines that kids and families have come to know and love from the movies, and we’re looking forward to hearing what ‘Cars’ fans think of it.”

“At Pixar, we love seeing the worlds we create in our films extend into other media,” said Jay Ward, Cars Franchise Manager. “We are excited to bring the world of ‘Cars’ to online audiences in a fun and imaginative way.”
