You’ve been to Disneyland. You’ve experienced every attraction, watched every spectacle, and sampled every delicacy the resort has to offer. Or have you? During your daylong Disneyland adventure, you will visit legendary locales seldom (if ever) seen by Disney fans—places that are, shall we say, off the map?

Included in your unforgettable visit will be a tour of Walt Disney’s private apartment above the Fire Station on Main Street, U.S.A. This quaint studio apartment was built during the construction of Disneyland so that Walt could sometimes spend the night and watch his beloved dream of Disneyland became a reality. Once the park opened, Walt and his family would occasionally spend the night—or just use the fully functional apartment (complete with shower and small kitchenette!) as a respite from the busy park below. Lillian would use the outside patio for afternoon tea and for entertaining guests while Walt would conduct studio business using the (still-working) Victorian-era rotary phone.

Interested in a grand circle tour of Disneyland? How about taking a ride in the Lilly Belle VIP parlor car on the Disneyland Railroad? Named after Walt’s wife, Lillian, this converted observation car from the early days of the Disneyland Railroad was actually built in 1928, making it as old as Mickey Mouse. For the park’s 1975-1976 celebration of the American Bicentennial, the car was re-christened the Lilly Belle, an elegantly furnished parlor car whose guests have included heads of state and legends from all corners of the worlds of the arts and sports. Now it’s your turn to be treated like royalty aboard the Disneyland Railroad!

Then it’s time for a dream come true. In 2008, The Disney Gallery above Pirates of the Caribbean was transformed into Disneyland Dream Suite. The space was originally intended as an apartment for Walt to entertain guests and spend the night, but he passed away before it could be completed. As part of the Disney Parks Year of a Million Dreams celebration, the apartment was brought to life by Imagineers, who not only stayed faithful to many of Walt’s original ideas for the space, but enhanced it with some truly magical touches that include a quintessentially Disney  “kiss goodnight.”

Of course there will be ample time to enjoy many of the park’s signature attractions, including Haunted Mansion and it’s a small world, but don’t fill up on churros. We will be meeting at 6 p.m. for a very special dinner (and drinks) inside one of the resort’s most unique restaurants.

D23 announces a new screening series as a part of its ever-growing roster of special events for its members. Our new From the Vaults film screenings is dedicated to favorite films created by Disney that the D23 team is excited to share on the big screen once again. We are kicking off this new series with a 20^th anniversary screening of the 1992 Disney film musical Newsies.

D23 is happy to offer its members (and their guests) the opportunity to see the music-filled film at the historic Walt Disney Studios (presented in the state-of-the-art, 400-seat, Studio Theatre).

Released two decades ago, the film, which followed the real-life newsboy strike of 1899 in New York City and stars Christian Bale and Robert Duvall, wasn’t an instant hit. However, through the years the film has gained a fan following for its impressive songs, exuberant production numbers and timeless tale of good triumphing over greed. The movie’s latter-day popularity recently inspired a stage version, which opened in September of 2011 and received rave reviews at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse.

The film features a musical score by Oscar® winner and Disney Legend Alan Menken and also marked the directorial debut of Kenny Ortega, who had choreographed movies like Footloose and Dirty Dancing and went on to helm the High School Musical series, as well as last year’s Michael Jackson concert film, This Is It.

The movie event will also feature a limited selection of D23 merchandise and a special gift just for each D23 Member who attends, as well as the opportunity to mix and mingle with your fellow D23 Members at the Walt Disney Studios!

This past weekend members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club enjoyed two full days of holiday happenings at Walt Disney World Resort during the club’s annual Magic and Merriment event. In fact, the event was so popular in past years that D23 doubled the capacity this year by offering the event two times. And the excitement was capped with a royal engagement.

The merriment kicked off inside World Showplace at Epcot where guests were treated to presentations that offered an insider’s look at the holidays around the resort. Imagineer Alex Carothers and Holiday Services manager Lisa Borotkanics revealed some of the secrets to transforming Walt Disney World Resort, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, and the Disney Cruise Line fleet into wintery wonderlands. Walt Disney Archivist Steven Vagnini looked at the history of the Candlelight Processional at Disney Parks (later that day, guests enjoyed reserved seating to see the spectacle for themselves). And Disney Legend Kathryn Beaumont (who gave voice to Wendy in “Peter Pan” and Alice in “Alice in Wonderland”) talked about her history with Walt Disney working with Walt on 1951’s Walt Disney Christmas Show.

Imagineer Gary Landrum explored the creation of the Cinderella Castle Dream Suite – and the following day, guests all received a tour of the rarely seen accommodations. It was inside this regal room that D23 Member Amanda Richards received a royal proposal from her now-fiancé, Ben Doughan. Congratulations!

“The Dream Suite was more magical than I expected,” said D23 Member Debbie Bingham who had traveled from New Jersey to attend the event. “It was even more impressive after hearing the presentation the day before where the Imagineer described all the details.” Guests also got a glimpse backstage, visiting the Holiday and Scenic Services buildings as well as the Parade Barn. “It doesn’t ruin the magic,” added Debbie’s husband Gary. “It makes it even more impressive.”

Also included during the weekend were Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and a spectacular holiday feast at Disney’s Animal Kingdom after the park had closed to guests. While Magic and Merriment marks the end of another year of extraordinary experiences, D23 has unveiled an impressive slate of events for 2012 that will bring Disney delights to D23 Members across the country. For the first time ever, Disney fans are being invited to the historic Smoke Tree Ranch to experience the splendor of the California desert and the charms of “The Ranch” just like Walt Disney did over 50 years ago.

Smoke Tree Ranch has been likened to Walt’s own “Laughing Place”—a peaceful retreat in beautiful Palm Springs that he and his family frequented and spent many weekends and holidays, which has been named one of the world’s 10 “exclusive hideaways” by the Robb Rebort. In 1954, Walt sold his vacation home at Smoke Tree Ranch to help finance Disneyland, later purchasing another home in the community in 1957.

Over the years, Walt helped his daughters learn how to ride horses, enjoyed recreational activities, and enjoyed a peaceful desert environment where he could retreat from his busy work life.

Walt’s love for the resort was symbolized by a stylized “STR” emblem emblazoned on his necktie, as seen today in the beloved “Partners” statue found in the Disney Parks. (Read more on Smoke Tree Ranch.)

In 2012, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will take the show on the road as it kicks off a year-long celebration for D23 members with a bold lineup of fantastic events.

Throughout the year, D23 will delight Disney fans from Boston, New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Palm Springs to Orlando, Burbank and even Marceline, Missouri — Walt Disney’s boyhood hometown — with the thrill and excitement of uniquely magical Disney experiences.

“To help D23 celebrate its third ‘fanniversary,’ we developed the most exciting lineup yet of special events to bring our members truly one-of-a-kind Disney experiences,” said Steven Clark, head of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club. “We’re excited to visit our fans all around the country, and to create events we hope will surprise and delight them.”

Starting the year are two new extraordinary experiences: D23’s JOURNEY TO MARCELINE and D23 PRESENTS THE SMOKE TREE RANCH ROUNDUP.

For the first time ever, a special tour of Walt’s boyhood hometown — Marceline, Missouri — will take place for D23 members on March 14. Led by Disney archivists, the daylong Journey to Marcelineexplores this small town (pop. 2,221) in ways that will have special resonance for Disney fans.

In his later life, Walt found unique inspiration at Smoke Tree Ranch in Palm Springs, and during the incredible, three-day Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup (January 23-25), D23 Members can experience this exclusive retreat in a completely unique way. In another first-of-its-kind, immersive experience, Disney fans will get to see what Walt called “my own laughing place,” taking part in screenings, presentations, activities and delectable meals, all while staying in a Smoke Tree Ranch cottage.

In the spring, D23 takes the party on the road with the D23 ‘FANNIVERSARY’ CELEBRATION. It commemorates more than 40 unforgettable Disney magical milestones, each celebrating an anniversary in2012. Hosted by Disney archivists, D23 Fanniversary Celebration events will be held in Orlando, New York, Chicago, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles and revisits some of the most beloved Disney theme park attractions, animated and live-action films, TV series and more from 85 years of Disney history. Fanniversary events will be open to the public, with special admission and surprises created especially for D23 Members in attendance.

In the summer, D23 will offer an all-new “Destination D” event – DESTINATION D: 75 YEARS OF DISNEY ANIMATION, held over two days at the Disneyland Resort in California (August 11-12). As Disney marks the 75th anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, D23 marks the occasion by gathering many renowned Disney animation legends along with topDisney animators, voice talent (past and present) and composers — plus interesting demonstrations, fascinating presentations, autograph sessions and the chance to see entertaining animation rarities from the Disney vaults —all in celebration of 75 years of Disney feature animation.

Throughout the year, D23 will continue its popular series of movie screenings at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. With a new series, FROM THE VAULTS, D23 will bring favorite live-action films back to the big screen, including special 20th anniversary screenings of Newsies (February 25) and Sister Act (May 26), plus the classic Disney adaptation of Treasure Island (September 22). D23’s 50 AND FABULOUS series also returns in 2012, with In Search of the Castaways (June 23).

About Brian Rood:
Brian began his career while in college, studying graphic design. He became interested in the field of illustration and started an internship with a local art studio that was breaking into the comic books industry. It was here, that Brian learned about the airbrush as a commercial illustration tool and quickly caught on to painting with it. Soon Brian was teaching other artists how to manipulate the tool and create images that rival photographs.

Brian attended his first Comic Book convention with only two paintings and not knowing what to expect. About Cindy Morgan:
Best known as “Lacey Underall” in CADDYSHACK, and “Yori” in TRON, Cindy Morgan was born Cynthia Ann Cichorski on September 29 in Chicago, IL, not far from Wrigley Field. The daughter of a Polish factory worker and German mother, Cindy survived 12 years of Catholic school and was the first in her family to attend college.

While studying communications at Northern Illinois University, Cindy spun records on the radio. A commercial station in town wanted her to report the news for them as well, and so a slight deception was needed. She used the name Cindy Morgan, taken from a story Cindy read about Morgan le Fay when she was twelve years old.

After graduation, Cindy gave all the latest meteorological news on a TV station in Rockford, Ill. She also kept her hand in radio by working the graveyard shift at a local rock station. Then she returned to Chicago and deejayed on WSDM (now WLUP). During a labor dispute at the station, she literally quit on the air and walked out with a record still spinning on the turntable.

She found employment at auto shows for Fiat, which took her to both coasts. Cindy moved to Los Angeles in 1978, and became the Irish Spring girl. While she did TV commercials, she studied acting, and was rewarded with her first screen role in CADDYSHACK, playing the role of Lacey Underall, an over-amorous ingenue.
Disney made film history with TRON, the first computer-generated film. Cindy played two characters: Lora, a computer programmer in the “real” world, and Yori, her alter-ego in the film’s computer generated flights of imagination.

Cindy Morgan’s television credits to date include “Falconcrest”, “Matlock”, “The Larry Sanders Show”, “Amazing Stories” and “Bring ‘Em Back Alive”.

Cindy also associate-produced five films with Larry Estes, best known for “Sex, Lies and Videotape”.

She’s now finishing her first book, a story about how a nice Catholic girl became Lacey Underall in CADDYSHACK.

A few weeks ago, I attended Disney’s D23 Expo. The highlight for me was easily the Walt Disney Studios panel where we got a look into what’s on the horizon for the studio. We saw clips from a lot of movies, but one movie stood out the most for me: Disney Animation’s ‘Wreck-It Ralph’.  We got to see four minutes of footage from the movie, which was the entire beginning of it, and I’ll talk a little bit about it after the break.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ stars John C. Reilly as our hero, Ralph, who is also the narrator. The thing about Ralph is, he isn’t your normal hero. In fact, he’s the bad guy in an 8-bit arcade game, known as ‘Wreck-It Ralph’, that has survived the changing times with new games and consoles. Ralph is misunderstood, and he’s tired of being the villain in the game. He watches as his nemesis, Fix-It Felix gets all the attention after he defeats Ralph time and time again. We see Ralph and Felix dueling out in the 8-Bit game, only to have Felix fix everything Ralph has broken and knocks him off the roof. The citizens of the game bring Felix food and throw him parties while Ralph is left to go out into the dump every night and sleep in the garbage. He assures us it’s comfy, but he wants to do more for himself then that. We are then shown that he is in a villains self help group, and we see various characters from other arcade games such as the ghost from Pac-Man and many, many more. They don’t understand why Ralph wants to be a hero, and tell him that his calling will always be as a villain. Ralph doesn’t agree, but he lets it go.

That is where the footage we saw stopped. The rest of the movie will have Ralph on an adventure to become the hero of his own game. He goes into different games, trying to find his true calling. One of the games, a first person shooter, bears a striking resemblance to a very popular series, ‘Halo.’ There is even a rumor that we may see a cameo of Tron in the film, which I’m sure hoping pans out. The footage was really, really funny and showed that this could be the surprise hit of next November. It had a lot of charm to it, and John C. Reilly is the perfect voice for our hero, who is just not satisfied with how his life has turned out. The thing that stood out for me was how well written the movie is. I mean, even with the footage in an incomplete state, I was laughing really hard. And it had heart as well. A lot of that credit goes to the director, Rick Moore, who I’ve been a fan of since he worked on ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Futurama’. It was just so charming, it was hard not to fall in love with it right away. I was honestly very impressed with what we saw, and I can’t wait to see more from the movie. The rest of the cast includes the likes of Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, and Jack McBrayer.

‘Wreck-It Ralph’ will be bursting into theaters November 2, 2012. Keep an eye out for it.

Beer and non-alcoholic beverages will also be served to set the tone for a fabulous event.

We will then proceed to the foyer of The American Adventure rotunda for a sumptuous dinner served in the rotunda with special guest, Disney Legend Bob Gurr. In keeping with our “American adventure,” each station will be themed to a different region of the United States. Guests will be able to enjoy New Orleans crayfish soup, crisp California greens, Pacific Coast salmon, basil-seared North Carolina chicken breast with Georgia peaches, Midwestern grass-fed beef medallions with a Washington State Cabernet Demi and much more! The cross-country dessert selection includes Key Lime Pie, Louisiana pecan squares and other sweet treats.

Monday morning we will convene inside the World Showplace in Epcot’s World Showcase for a morning of culinary delights. Marianne Hunnel and Michael Jenner, event content development area manager and operations manager, respectively, for the festival will give guests a look at the rich (and delicious!) history and highlight some of the new additions to this year’s event.

Then it’s time for a pairing party! Expert chefs and food and wine aficionados will walk guests through a selection of wine and beer pairings with international delicacies from Hawaii, the Caribbean, Portugal, and Scandinavia—all regions being highlighted in this year’s Festival.

That afternoon, guests can join D23 head Steven Clark and others from the D23 Team as we sip and stroll our way around World Showcase—stopping in two special locations around the lagoon for a special Sip & Stroll treat.

Also during the day, take some time to get out of the sun and relax! The VIP lounge inside The American Adventure parlor will be open just for D23 Members as a place to enjoy some water or lemonade. If you haven’t seen the elegantly designed lounge, you will definitely want to stop in for a look and a libation. You also won’t want to miss the selection of exclusive D23 merchandise on display in the lounge, including our new collection featuring Bacchus, the god of wine, as from Fantasia, and his pal Jacchus, which will be available for order. All purchases will be shipped directly to your home!

That evening we will gather at the America Gardens Theatre for reserved seating to the Eat to the Beat concert, featuring Sugar Ray (“Fly,” “Every Morning,” “Someday”).

We’ll then walk over to Isle de France, in front of the French pavilion for private, reserved viewing of the nighttime spectacular IllumiNations and a dessert party that will include such sweet sensations as fresh strawberries, coffee-dusted compressed chocolate brownies, a doughnut flambé station and more! The perfect way to end a fantastic food-filled weekend!
