Brandon Mark Gillman, 30, was charged and plead guilty to possession or use of a controlled substance, a third-degree felony, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a class B misdemeanor, in November. He was sentenced to a short zero to five years in jail but most of the time was suspended and Gillman was ordered to spend 30 days in jail, three years’ on probation, 100 hours of community service and $1566 in fines and fees. The sad part about this story is not just the lax system we have for DUI in this country, but Gillman was a bus driver about to embark on a journey to take some high school graduates to Disneyland to celebrate.

Three Utah Trailways buses and drivers had been hired to take the students to Southern California on May 24, 2012, and were preparing to leave with a K-9 alerted to one of the bus drivers backpack. Mark Gillman was investigated by the Cedar City police; who were on site to search the student’s bags and make sure that no drugs were taken on the trip. Once the dog had alerted to Gillman he was asked to empty his pockets and bags. Police found several different drugs and took Gillman to Iron County Correctional Facility, where he took field sobriety tests. Prosecutors say the man failed all of the tests.

In addition, a urine test was found to be positive for cocaine and oxycontin.

Even though the story has many sad directions on the state of some people and systems, the good news is that this man caught before a tragedy happened and all the graduates were safe!
