Best Things I Love About Disney World: Epcot Holiday Storytellers

Visitors to Walt Disney World during the Christmas holiday season have a number of wonderful holiday-themed events to enjoy above and beyond the regular Disney attractions. With Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, Epcot’s Candlelight Processional, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, in addition to the beautiful decorations, fun parades, and festive music…it is no wonder that this time of the year is one of the most popular times to visit Disney World

It is also no wonder that one of the most special Holiday events is one that is perhaps not as well-known as the others: Epcot’s Holidays Around the World Storytellers. But if you are visiting Walt Disney World in the next month, plan to take some time to visit World Showcase and stop by to see a few of the Storytellers if you can. You’ll be in for a treat if you do.

One of the reasons I love World Showcase is the chance to travel “around the World” in a few hours, sampling the various countries’ food, folklore, customs, and culture. It’s fascinating and fun, and a great way for everyone….but children especially….to learn a little about this great big world of ours. And at no time is it better to do this, than during December, where Storytellers from the different countries share special Holiday stories and customs, often dressed as a specific national/cultural icon from that country. Entertaining and fun, learning about how others celebrate Christmas and other winter holidays is a wonderful way to add to your “Christmas Spirit”.

So, if you do visit, who will you see?

  • In Mexico, The Three Kings share the story of their journey to find the Baby Jesus.
  • In Norway, the gnome Julenissen has a funny and interactive tale.
  • In China, you will meet he Monkey King
  • In Germany, St. Nicholas or Helga will talk about that country’s wonderful customs.
  • In Morocco, Taarji the storytelling drummer, shares the meaning of Ramadan
  • In Italy, La Befana will share how children in Italy celebrate the Epiphany
  • In the U.S. you may learn about the story of Hannukah, Kwanzaa…as well as visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus
  • In Japan, the Daruma Doll vendor talks about celebrating the New Year
  • In France, Pere Noel reads a letter from a little girl that he received.
  • In the United Kingdom, you may find Father Christmas tell you about some Christmas customs that are very familiar in America too
  • In Canada, Papa Noel is waiting to talk about holiday traditions in his country.

Each of the Storytellers is scheduled at several times each afternoon/early evening near their respective countries around World Showcase, and while it can be a bit challenging to make it to see all of them in one visit, even seeing a few will provide a wonderful Holiday experience for you and your family. The schedule you receive as you enter Epcot will note the times that each will be presenting.

Most Storyteller presentations are not especially crowded, so it is easy for children especially to be right up front to see…and hear…the entire story up close and personal. And each Storyteller is always happy to stay afterwards for some pictures, so be sure to have your camera ready.

And if you are going before Christmas, really, what would make a better family Christmas card than your entire group with Father Christmas? 🙂

If you have plans to visit Walt Disney World this coming Christmas Season, put Epcot’s Holiday Storytellers on your “must-see” list. I promise that you will be so glad you did!
