"Bambi" 75th Anniversary Blu-Ray Release Review

The 75th anniversary of Bambi is this year, and Disney is celebrating by re-releasing this classic film on Blu-Ray with tons of bonus features. I got the wonderful opportunity to be invited to the Disney lot in Burbank to kick-off this release.

The big surprise of the whole day was getting to meet Peter Behn and Donnie Dunagan, the voices of young Thumper and Bambi.

Brought up many times is how many fan letters they get per week by children all over the world. It’s very obvious how much the two men appreciated their contribution toward this classic film and toward “Mr. Disney” as well. The environmental statement from the film is something both of them are very proud of and also was something Mr. Disney was proud of as well.

I also got a copy of the 75th anniversary Blu-Ray release of “Bambi.” Besides being able to watch this awesome Disney classic whenever I want to, the bonus features are great! Here’s a break down of the bonus features:

Studio Stories: Bambi
A 1942 recording of Walt Disney talking about the lead into and the production of “Bambi.” It’s a real treat getting to listen to the man himself talk about the details of this beloved movie.

Deleted Scenes:
If you ‘play all’ you can get an introduction from animator Floyd Norman. The deleted scenes consist of sketches and voice over of actors recreating scripts.
One is – Bambi and Snow the other is The Grasshopper.

The Bambi Effect:
Walt’s vision of how his artists treated “Bambi” – from Tyrus Wong’s background art to the study of actual animals for realistic movement – is what blazed the trail for how animation is treated for years after, and to this day.

Bambi Fawn Facts:
Fun facts about deer, skunks and bunnies!

Classic Bonus Features:
From the DVD release of “Bambi” in 2011, these bonus feature might be familiar to most fans.

Deleted Scenes:
Two Leaves, Bambi Stuck On A Reed, Winter Grass. Sketches of possible scenes recreated with voice over artists that didn’t make the final story cut.

Deleted Song:
“Twitterpated” of beautiful song originally scored for the film, that also didn’t make the cut.

The Making of Bambi: A Prince is Born:
An awesome 6 part series covering every single aspect of the making of this stunning film. From finding the right actors to voice the characters to the score of the film, any “Bambi” lover will enjoy every single chapter of these behind the scenes

Tricks of the Trade:
The idea and execution of Walt’s multi-plane camera

Inside the Disney archives:
A glimpse into the archives on the Disney lot to find the hidden “Bambi” artwork from the film (some had never been released)

The Old Mill (Short film)
The classic Disney animated film that started the realistic animation process that was used in “Bambi”

I hope you go out and add the blu-ray “Bambi” to your film collection. It’s well worth owning and revisiting for years to come!
