Hyperion Wharf Concept Sketch

A notice of commencement form filed by Disney on August 4 announces that “improvements will be made to certain retail property” and specifically cites Mannequins, BET Soundstage, Adventurer’s Club, and the Comedy Warehouse.  The forms noted by the Epcot Explorer’s Encyclopedia provide only a broad description with little insight into the nature of the upcoming project.

The Notice of Commencement does, however, specify that whatever plans Disney has for Pleasure Island include the basic structures of the mentioned clubs.  No permits have been filed for demolition; instead the documents specify renovation and construction.

With Disney’s July 12 announcement that construction would be pausing for a re-evaluation of the master plan, the announcement of new construction is surprising, particularly so soon after the announced halt. Neither the permits nor the announcement of the Pleasure Island construction pause mention Hyperion Wharf, the shopping and dining area announced as the new plan for Pleasure Island in November 2009.

Hyperion Wharf was proposed as an area loosely themed to a turn-of-the-century wharf that offered an expansion of shopping and dining without any clearly defined entertainment options. The new construction filed for the area could be the next phase in Hyperion Wharf development, but fans of the former Pleasure Island will wait for further announcement from Disney regarding possible entertainment or further theming of the currently unused 1.5 miles of Downtown Disney.

One More Disney Day promotion tied to environmental awareness at D23?

OneMore1 300x214 One More Disney Day promotion tied to environmental awareness at D23? %tagDisney’s plans to launch an unspecified program titled One More Disney Day may be connected with a special announcement scheduled as part of the Friday programming at the D23 expo on August 19.  Stitchkingdom.com has connected the new program with the announcement and suggested that the program may be a revival of the 2010 Give a Day, Get a Disney Day program.  That initiative proved so popular that it reached capacity and closed after a few months due to the unprecedented response.

Disney press releases regarding the “special announcement” draw clear connections between the statement and activities at Disney’s Corporate Citizenship pavilion, a location being used to promote Disney’s environmental projects with a scavenger hunt that will lead visitors through D23 to boost their “environmental I.Q.”  The booth will also promote Disney’s Friends for Change, a program targeted at children and pre-teens, encouraging them to pledge to change the environment and participate in activities tied to preserving the planet.

starcatchers 202x300 One More Disney Day promotion tied to environmental awareness at D23? %tagThe announcement is scheduled Friday August 18 during to a “storytelling” session featuring Dave Barry, Ridley Pearson, and David Arquette.  Barry and Pearson are the authors of Peter and the Starcatchers, a trilogy of young adult books promoted as a trilogy to J M Barrie’s classic Peter Pan.  The novels,  featuring porpoises that help the main characters, have been used in classrooms as a way of teaching young learners about the importance of the ecosystem and environmental responsibility.  The addition of David Arquette, star of Jake and the Neverland Pirates on Disney Junior targets an even younger audience as well as reinforcing the Peter Pan theme of the group.

Leslie Goodman, Senior Vice President of Disney Corporate Citizenship emphasized the connection between the books and the environmental activities, commenting that ” “By nurturing young readers we help support creativity and imagination, an important part of our citizenship mission at Disney.” That focus on young people’s creativity is echoed on the Friends for Change website, where participants are encouraged to be creative in finding ways to help the environment, and on the Disney Corporate Citizenship site where innovative school projects are selected for reward.

If the One More Disney Day program is to be launched with this special announcement, it seems highly likely that it will be tied into community involvement, particularly environmental preservation. Targeted at children and their families, the program may be more than a reprise of the broad volunteerism embraced by the Give a Day, Get a Disney Day program. It may instead focus on environmental concerns and emphasize the impact that young people and their creativity may have on preserving the planet.

top logo One More Disney Day promotion tied to environmental awareness at D23? %tagWell aware of the overwhelming response to the 2010 volunteer initiative, it seems likely that Disney will design One More Disney Day for greater longevity.  Speculation suggests that the program may specifically offer an additional day on guests’ existing vacations, essentially serving as an “earned” discount.  The rumored promotion has also sparked theories and questions about participation by international guests, who were unable to participate in the 2010 initiative, and annual passholders, who were offered a variety of alternative benefits in the earlier promotion.

If the D23 Announcement centers on One More Disney Day, it is clear that the denizens of Neverland will serve as its icons, much as the Muppets did for the earlier promotion.  Not only does that allow Disney marketing to emphasize environmental conservation as an “adventure,” it also provides appeal for both boys (Peter and the Lost Boys) and girls (Disney’s successful fairies line).

Although it lasted only a few months, the Give a Day, Get a Disney Day promotion generated strong response, not only as proof of Disney’s commitment to community responsibility but also among those who participated, many of whom cite a new enjoyment of volunteering.  Beyond mere corporate posturing, Disney’s offering of a One more Disney Day promotion tied to conservation and literacy, both literal and environmental, will help to cement their image as dedicated to involving children and families in social responsibility.

For more details on the special announcement, watch the Chip and Co website during D23 on Friday August 18.

Shanghai Disneyland Castle revealed in new concept art

shanghaiInt 200x200 Shanghai Disneyland Castle revealed in new concept art %tagNew concept art released today gives a hint of Disney’s plans for its newest castle in Shanghai Disneyland. April 11 concept art of the new park in China revealed a familiar Disney park structure with various areas fanning outward from a  forced perspective castle in the center of the park. That castle, dubbed “Storybook Castle” will be the largest castle ever constructed in a Disney theme park.

Rather than focusing on the story of any one Disney princess, the Shanghai Disneyland castle will celebrate all of them, hosting an attraction called the “Once upon a Time Adventure.”  The new image reveals a breathtaking staircase dripping with pixie dust rising into the upper floors of the castle.

Shanghaiarch 200x200 Shanghai Disneyland Castle revealed in new concept art %tagOn the ground floor of the castle, guests will be welcomed to the impressive structure by a massive, elaborately themed arch.  Inside, they will have the opportunity to take a 10 minute water tour of the park that will showcase the areas and attractions of Shanghai Disneyland.

The new park, managed in collaboration with Chinese property management group Shendi, represents a foothold for Disney in the emerging Chinese entertainment market.  Although Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea have proven popular,  entertainment companies see China as an almost entirely untapped market.  Shanghai Disneyland is attempting to honor both Disney tradition and Chinese culture to create a new, unique experience for guests at the park.

What do you think?  Does that staircase make you want to see what’s at the top?  Do you think the new park will impact Disney’s US tourism?

Ridemakerz at DTD West Side

With the announcement of Splitsville, an upscale bowling and billiards venue, taking over the 50,000 square feet originally occupied by the Virgin Megastore, the fate of the venues current tenant, Ridemakerz has been in question.  In the official Splitsville announcement, Disney indicated that Ridemakerz would be housed in the Marketplace area, but no specifics were mentioned.

Ridemakerz will be sharing space in the Team Mickey store.  Disney evidently feels that the RC car customization shop will be a good match with the sports and ESPN themed merchandise sold in the Team Mickey space.

TMickey 200x200 Ridemakerz to move in with Team Mickey %tagRidemakerz allows guests to choose the pieces to create one of a kind customized RC cars.  Recent contracts with the Disney company have included Cars 2 chassis for the RC cars being added to the existing NASCAR and sports car themed elements featured in the store.  Guests at Ridemakers choose the pieces that will make up the car, then assemble the care at a series of workbenches with guidance from employees as needed.  The West Side location also featured luxury sports cars and NASCAR racing cars from Ridemakerz owners and affiliates.

According to cast members, Ridemakerz will only occupy part of the space in the current Team Mickey store, severely reducing the display area from its current dimensions.  It will be interesting to see if the new location proves effective for the RC car customization company.
