Calling the holidays at Walt Disney World “magical” seems a bit cliché; after all, it’s magical 365 days a year; you don’t need twinkling lights and Christmas ornaments for that. Yet, there’s something undeniably special about the Christmas season at Disney World. And, since the holidays come early (festivities usually begin in early November), guests have lots of time to experience it all.

At the Magic Kingdom, the “Castle Dream Lights” make the castle appear as if it is covered in ice, with over 200,000 individual lights used to create this effect. This happens every night during the holidays in the park (and runs through early January) at around sundown. Make sure you pick up a times guide when you enter the park and check it as to when the presentation is. The lights will stay on the entire night, but in Disney style, there’s a short stage show that goes along with the turning on of the lights, featuring Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Fairy Godmother, and of course, Cinderella. Plus, hearing the “oohs” and “aahs” from the crowd as each portion of the castle is lit up is very special.

If you’re looking for more holiday fun at the Magic Kingdom, then you definitely want to consider attending Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. This separately ticketed event is held on select nights in the Magic Kingdom park and features the Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, a special version of Holiday Wishes : Celebrate the Spirit of the Season fireworks, opportunities to meet lots of Disney characters (in holiday outfits, of course), complimentary cookies and hot chocolate, and best of all, a magical snow fall on Main Street, USA.

Over at Epcot, head over to the World Showcase, where storytellers in each country share their holiday stories and traditions, such as the good-hearted witch La Befana, known in Italy for filling children’s shoes with treats, or the jolly gift-bearer Father Christmas in the United Kingdom. There are meet and greets with Santa and Mrs. Claus in The American Adventure. Kwanza and Hanukah are also celebrated. World Showcase is also a great place to do your holiday shopping and find unique gifts in each country.  The must see at Epcot however is the Candlelight Processional, the telling of the story of Christmas by a celebrity narrator accompanied by a mass choir and 50 piece live orchestra. Although it is secular in nature, it can be appreciated by anyone. Indeed, while I do not consider myself religious, or even spiritual, I find this well worth seeing. Note that this is a very popular event with guests, so I would highly recommend you doing the lunch or dinner package that is available to guarantee yourself seating. If you don’t, be prepared to wait in a long line to get in. Holiday festivities kick off on November 26th at Epcot this year, and run through December 30th.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is sure to brighten your holidays with the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights. No, not THAT Osborne Family. The light display was started by the late Jennings Osborne at his family home in Arkansas back in 1986 to fulfill his daughter’s Christmas wish of seeing their entire home in lights. The display grew so large that neighbor’s started to complain and sought to block the display, and in 1995, the entire operation was moved to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where it has continued to delight visitors from around the world. Starting in early November, every evening at sundown, the Streets of America are lit up with over 4 million Christmas lights. Every 10 minutes, the lights “dance” to holiday music as “snow” falls above you. Admission to the display is free with park admission, and this annual event is a must do when visiting Disney World during the holidays.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom may not have a candlelight processional, millions of Christmas lights, or a special holiday party, but that doesn’t mean the holidays aren’t fun there! No, the animals aren’t covered in garland and candy canes, but the park is beautifully decorated throughout, starting with the large Christmas tree you’ll see outside the park entrance, decorated with animal themed ornaments.

Make sure you catch Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade, a safari style parade led by King Louie and Baloo from the Jungle Book. The parade also features many other of your favorite Disney characters, such as Mickey, Minnie and Chip and Dale, as well as stilt walkers and beautifully costumed performers. And be sure to stop by Camp Minnie Mickey, which during the holidays becomes Santa Goofy’s Holiday Village, and is a great place to stop and meet characters in their holiday outfits, and have your picture taken with them!

Once you’ve visited the parks and experienced all the holiday magic, you may feel like there’s nothing left to see or do, but not so.  One of the most enjoyable things you can do while visiting Walt Disney World for the holidays is tour the resorts. Many people mistakenly believe that if they are not staying at that resort and/or not eating there, they aren’t to visit the property, but you absolutely are. The best part about seeing the resorts during the holidays is that Disney cast members do a wonderful job of incorporating each resort’s theme into the holiday decorations.

I personally have my favorites to get me in the Christmas spirit – Wilderness Lodge (there’s something about a cabin and a roaring fireplace that says Christmas, and the huge tree in the lobby is amazing); Beach Club (you have to see the giant carousel made of gingerbread and chocolate fondant that actually moves) and of course, Grand Floridian (in addition to a massive tree in the lobby, a giant gingerbread house can be found, selling gingerbread cookies and houses).

Whether you’ll be celebrating the Christmas season at Disney this year or just wishing you were, best wishes for a safe, healthy, and happy holiday!

2011 & 2012 Disney Dining Plans Reviewed

Walt Disney World has several Dining Plans. Most people only know about one or two of these different dining plan options (Quick Service and Disney Plus Dining). On this weeks Mouse Chat we review all the different Disney Dining Plans and cover what each plan offers. There are also changes to the 2012 Disney Dining Plans that you should know about.

Also in this weeks Disney news we talk about Lightning McQueen and how he will be coming to Disney Hollywood Studios. Here is the link to the new Lightning McQueen Cars appearance that happens in Lights, Motor, Action (Video). This is coming to WDW soon and is already showing at Disneyland Paris. This is the Disneyland Paris version, which I assume will be what appears at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida soon.

You asked: How much is a Disney Resort Drink Mug? $13.99 and you are set.  It is good for your entire Disney Resort stay.

Please continue to send in any Disney questions you have and you might hear them on a future Mouse Chat Show. 🙂
We have a Disney listener question show coming up in two weeks.

The Disneyland Hotel

The Disneyland Hotel

Welcome to the Disneyland Hotel here at Disneyland Paris.

I have to start by saving that this Hotel is stunning. It is definitely the center piece of the Disneyland Park and is actually the entrance to the park itself. When you walk up this is the first sight you see, the beautiful gardens, ponds and water features, flowers and topiaries, and this magnificent Victorian Era Resort.

Underneath the resort is the entrance to Disneyland Park with covered ticket booths and a covered entrance making easy to get out of the sun or rain to enter the park.

There are several paths to explore and fantastic photo opportunities when you are walking up to the park. Have the time to explore all the nooks and crannies here was a great deal of fun, and I am sure most families with a limited day or two just run right by.

The resort is very much like the Grand Floridian from the outside and on the inside.

To the far right is the main lobby, you can enter the main lobby by car on the extreme right, or walk in from the ground level instead of going into the Disneyland Park.

The Disneyland Hotel lobby has the Grand Floridian feel

The lobby has the same feel as the Grand Floridian at Walt Disney World but on a much smaller scale. This was the only lobby at any of the Disneyland Paris resorts that gave me that “Wow” feeling when I entered. It is also the only lobby that was really built for more than just checking in and checking out people. It is still small compared to the Grand Floridian, but it is perfect for sitting and people watching while the rest of your party is getting ready back in the room for your day in the parks.

There is also a bibbidi bobbidi boutique of sorts just up the stairs tucked away as a temporary room on the first floor walkway.

This is a fun hidden extra spcial thing you can do for your own little Princess

This is a fun hidden extra spcial thing you can do for your own little Princess

The resort is basically three buildings. The Lobby building connects to the main center structure via an enclosed walkway on the top floor. You can get some views, not spectacular, from the park from these glass enclosed walkways between the buildings.

The main center building is the one you will see most photographed as it is the one you see when you walk directly to the park. It houses the majority of shops and restaurants.

The last building has access to the enclosed pool and spa area.

The indoor pool area also has nice outdoor lounge chairs and tables around the gardens

The indoor pool area also has nice outdoor lounge chairs and tables around the gardens

I believe all buildings contain rooms.

The cast members costumes, décor, music, molding, artwork, all will remind you of the Grand Floridian.

If you have the money to spend this is the Disney Resort to stay at during your Disneyland Paris vacation. The resort is stunning, clean, have a friendly staff and you are literally at the entrance to the Park.

This sign invites you to the Hotel Santa Fe

I was very excited about the Hotel Santa Fe when I researched Disney resorts at Disneyland Paris.   The photos, the overall theme and concept, it all looked very cool.  It’s not.  I am very glad I went to all the Disney resorts and spent several days exploring them before staying at Disneyland Paris for a week long vacation.

I would consider the Hotel Santa Fe a value resort if you are comparing it to a Walt Disney World resort in Orlando.  Also you need to understand that prices are much higher in France than in the US and with the weak US dollar it is even worse.

It is not quite this bad but a comparison to staying at a Motel 6 and paying the same price as the Grand Floridian is not far off.
To get a feel for the resort you need to watch the video and decide for yourself.

This hotel is about a 15 minute walk to the park.  It is basically located behind the Sequoia Lodge.  There is also bus transportation to the parks, but it’s probably faster just to walk.

The front desk area at the Hotel Santa Fe

As a guest you would arrive most likely by bus to the main check in building.  Buses pick up at the RER station.  This main build is a long narrow building with neon signs surrounded by pavement and a large parking lot in front and behind.  The lobby is really just an area to get into a que line and either check in or check out.  There is a character photo spot to the left when you walk in to take photos with one of the Disney Characters at set times.

This is really a cool photo, but it's about the only one in the area

There is a long narrow cement floor hallway, like you probably remember from your high school, that has a small arcade, restrooms, and a  Disney shop.  The hallway ends at a buffet style restaurant that looks almost like a slightly smaller Peppers Market from Disney’s Coronado Spring in Orlando.  For breakfast each station in this food court has baskets filled with packets of butter, packets of jam, and more packets of butter.

Maybe I should have gotten the slice of ham

There is a spot that has hard rolls and small Chocolate croissants, a tray with some slices of ham, and three kinds of cereal.  There is also some cubes of cheese.  That’s it.  It’s amusing walking around this massive space from station to station to see how many different ways packets of butter can be displayed.  This “breakfast” is included in your stay.  At lunch time these same stations offer a buffet for about 22 – 26 euros a person so $33 – $35

The Bridge from Hotel Santa Fe toward the parks

The worse part is the resort itself.  It consists of outside lodge buildings that from the outside need a great deal of maintenance.  Some building have graffiti, most the paint is coming off, or are very cracked.  The grounds have signs that are old and falling apart, or covered in dirt and grime, Non of the water features, streams, ponds etc work, the landscaping, what little there is, is not maintained in some areas and some areas are just weeds.

I personally can not recommend anyone ever stay here.

Below are some photos of the resort but to get a true feeling for it you have to be there.  It’s very sad.  It’s hard to believe this is a Disney resort. Maybe a year from now things will be different at Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe, but I spent two days here and walking every inch of this property and just can not recommend this resort to anyone.

Did you know there is an old western town, a ghost town of sorts, just on the outskirts of Disneyland Paris? It’s Disney’s Hotel Cheyenne and the theme is loads of fun. Walt Disney himself always wanted to build a Western town in his park, and it’s nice to see this live on over at Disneyland Paris.

The Hotel Cheyenne is located between the Disney’s Hotel NY and Disney’s Sequoia Lodge. It is set back away from Lake Disney and hidden in the woods. The property shares a river with Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe.

It’s a nice walk though the wooded landscape from the Hotel Cheyenne to the Disney Village, Disneyland, and Walt Disney Studios.

If you are use to staying at Walt Disney World in Orlando, I would say this is similar to a moderate resort / Ft Wilderness.

The hotel theme is fantastic. It is literally an old western town with dusty old streets, a general store, watering hole, wash house and more. Exploring this resort is loads of fun.

hotel cheyenne disney
The best part are the ponies. There is a place by the Chuck Wagon that little kids can take pony rides from down the dusty old streets of this western town. I could just image how much fun my two little girls would have doing that. It also makes for a fantastic photo.

Now in front of the Chuck Wagon is a fenced in stable of sorts. I have to assume this was a petting zoo, or pony stable or something when the resort first opened. This is in the middle of the main area that people gather. The disappointing thing is that now it’s filled with large inflatable balls that kids can climb into and roll around in. These balls look like something out of an Alien movie and they are in the center of this perfectly themed western town. It just does not fit. You can see what I mean here in my video. Disney’s Hotel Cheyenne Video

Downsides:

When I walked up to this ghost town after walking along the woodland path, I first thought it was an abandoned set of buildings. The grass is noting but weeds, and most of the area is dirt with patches of weeds growing. Some of the buildings need to be painted, or have some rotting wood trim if you look closely at some of the corners or backs. There are places in need of maintenance around the grounds and some of the building facades need painting. Also the purple directional signs that you see all over Walt Disney World, they have those at Disneyland Paris to lead you along the paths to each resort. Some of those signs are falling apart, or have not been cleaned in years.

The landscaping overall at all of the Disneyland resorts is not well maintained when compared to Walt Disney World or Disneyland in California. I don’t know if it’s lack of staffing or lack of funds or both, but when you walk around the grounds at Hotel Cheyenne and also at Disney’s Hotel Santa Fe you can see that they are landscaped but not the immaculate grounds and care that you would see at a Disney World or Disneyland California resort.

Now weeds and dirt fit an old western town theme so you can kind of get away with some of the landscaping issues at the Hotel Cheyenne.

Update: Today I went to Hotel Cheyenne again (two days later) and their were ground crews out cleaning up the weeds and also some buildings has scaffolding going up to repaint. So there is work in progress which is great to see.

King Ludwig's Castle at the Disney Village

If you have a prince or princess in waiting that is looking for a royal meal, stop by and see the king at King Ludwig’s Castle.

King Ludwig’s Castle is located at the Disney Village at Disneyland Paris.

I dined at King Ludwigs for lunch on a weekend and I walked right in. There was plenty of seating available as most guests are in the parks. Dinner I am sure can get crowded during peak seasons.

The castle environment is a fun theme. This would be a great place to take the kids. Now there is no show, no jousting, no wenches tossing food at you, just a good selection of meals to choose from.

A look around the castle

The prices here are defiantly not cheap. I ordered a steak shish-kabob. Now this was one of the most expensive items and was around 25 Euros. I also purchased a large water, 1 liter, hey I was really thirsty. My total bill was 30 Euros. That is about $42 for lunch.

My meal consisted of one shish-kabob with steak and vegetables, a small cup of salad, and a side dish of golden brown cheese potatoes in a ceramic dish. I also had my also 5 Euro Vittel water.

Good, but it was 24 Euros for the meal

Now my meal was good and I left satisfied, but $45 for lunch is not my personal style. I am sure I could have had something else for less and maybe that would have fit my budget and appetite.

Personally I would prefer something around 10 – 15 Euros total for lunch, which brings me to a suggestion. Today, Earl of Sandwich opens at the Disney Village and they will have sandwiches for about 6 Euros. That is fantastic and I love the Earl of Sandwich at Walt Disney World for the same reason.

I toured the Disneyland Paris Resorts (DLPR) this week and have put together a review, or more of a pictorial of these different unique resorts. The first resort I visited was Disney’s Hotel NY.

Disney's Hotel NY Skating Rink

Disney's Hotel NY Ice Skating Rink (uses fake ice)

To give you a little background about the Disneyland Paris Resort area let me explain a little bit about how the resorts are laid out. The majority of the Disney resorts are around Lake Disney. If you come to the DLPR via the RER A train from Paris you arrive right in the center of the action. To your immediate right is the Disney Village and just though the Disney Village is Lake Disney and Disney’s Hotel NY.

The Main entrance to the Hotel NY

You can walk to both Disneyland Parks from all the Disney Resorts, except from Disney’s Davy Crockett Ranch which is a Ft. Wilderness like area with Cabins that is away from the main park.

So just like Disneyland you can walk from your Disney resort to all the entertainment options and parks.

The first hotel you come to on Lake Disney is the Hotel NY. It is at one end of the rectangular shaped lake Disney and Disney’s New Port Bay Club is at the other end. The longer sides of the rectangular lake have the Disney Village on one side and the Sequoia Lodge on the other.

Disney's Hotel NY on Lake Disney

When you enter Disney’s NY Hotel from the back, lake side, you first see a large skating rink. The skating rink is made out of fake ice, sort of like the white plastic some cutting boards are made of. There are fountains close to the hotel entrance and modern architecture with earth tones and symmetrical square windows are prominent in the design. If you are familiar with Team Disney at Disney World, this building has a similar feel. The building is constructed to give a modern NY City skyline type feel while using earth tone colors.

I would consider this hotel a deluxe resort when compared to Disney World. The resort has several table service restaurants, a gift shop, indoor pool, and a convention center. I also want to mention that there is an indoor pool which I did not get photos of but will try to on my next trip to the resort.

The inside of the Hotel NY does carry the NY theme. There are large NY Mets and Yankees logos on the floor, framed artwork of NY landmarks and the different bars, restaurants and entertainment areas all are names after locations in NY.

The Main Lobby and Check in Area at the Hotel NY

I did not spend the night at the Hotel NY so I can not comment on the rooms. My overall impression is the hotel is nice, has a fun theme, is clean, and being a Disney resort hotel it put you right there in the action.

Now Prices in Paris are more than at Walt Disney World, so you should except to pay more for your room, meals, and other entertainment at Disneyland Paris.

It is difficult to not always compare Disney World and Disneyland in CA to Disneyland Paris. DLPR is different. I did not get that WOW factor when I walked in like you would get at the Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, Animal Kingdom Lodge, etc. It is not that the Hotel NY is not nice, it’s different because it’s in Paris. The hotel spaces are mostly one floor so you do not walk into an expansive lobby.

Photo Tour:

There is a Character Spot at Each deluxe resort for autographs and photos. A Disney Photographer is there and you can take photos also.
