Calling all Doctor Who fans! It has been announced that David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor (!!!) will be joining the cast of A.K.A. Jessica Jones, a Netflix/Marvel original series starring Krysten Ritter. Isn’t this exciting!?

So, who is Tennant playing? He’s a villain. Yes, a villain. He’ll be starring as Zebediah Killgrave, aka The Purple Man. Killgrave, someone Jessica thought was only a part of her past, will be arriving to shake things up.

For some background, the comic version of Killgrave can release pheromones that enable him the power of mind control so long as he is nearby. He also has the ability to quickly heal from injuries and is, well, purple (hence the nickname). We’re not sure how close the Netflix version of Killgrave will resemble the comic version.

A.K.A. Jessica Jones is slated for a 13-episode run. It premieres later this year. Jessica Jones is the second upcoming Marvel series on Netflix, following Daredevil.

Uncle Scrooge-IDW

Comics and Disney have been pairing quite well lately, but surprisingly it’s not with Marvel this time around. Our favorite classic characters including Donald and beloved Mickey Mouse will be making appearances in comics published by San Diego-based IDW Publishing.

This April, you can expect to see Uncle Scrooge No. 1 at your local comic book shop, followed by a new Donald Duck series in May. Be on the lookout for Mickey Mouse comics in June, and Walt Disney Comics in July. Each of these upcoming series will feature reprints of comics originally created for foreign-language Disney comics. The covers will have art based on areas of the Walt Disney resorts. April will feature Adventureland, May will feature Tomorrowland, and July will feature Fantasyland.

Now that Disney is working alongside IDW, this means that the comic licensing is divided even further between three different publishers: IDW (classic Disney characters), Marvel (Figment, Seekers of the Weird, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad) and Canadian publisher Joe’s Books (Frozen and Big Hero 6).

Which of these comic series are you most looking forward to? Tell us!

Krysten Ritter from ABC’s Don’t Trust the B**** in Apartment 23 will portray superheroine Jessica Jones in a new Netflix original series produced by Marvel, in association with ABC Studios.

Not too familiar with the Marvel universe? No worries.

Jessica Jones is a private eye with a superhero past, with powers caused by exposure to radioactivity. Her Marvel debut was in the comic series “Alias” (2001).

The series will debut some time in 2015.

“Jessica Jones” isn’t the only Netflix series Marvel has lined up — “Daredevil”, “Luke Cage”, and “Iron Fist” are also in the pipeline. Each series will have 13 hour-long episodes.

I know I’m not alone in thinking that Funko’s Pop! Vinyls are adorable. Ridiculously adorable. But now, the cuteness level is reaching new heights. Fans of Guardians of the Galaxy (like me!) can now order a Dancing Groot bobble head. Funko and Marvel announced the release of the Pop! Vinyl last Friday. It is the sixth Guardians Pop! Vinyl that has been made available.

Even if you haven’t seen Guardians, there’s a chance you know all about the Dancing Baby Groot phenomena. Mini Groot appears in a scene at the end of Guardians where he is seen dancing to Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back”. A video of the dance made its way all over the internet and has become a worldwide obsession. (I also caved and purchased a t-shirt from TeeFury featuring a dancing Groot a little while ago.) There are also crafting tutorials online so you can make your own baby Groot! But now you can save some time (and possibly some trouble if you’re just not the crafty type) and purchase your own from Funko.

The Pop! Vinyl is currently available for PRE-ORDER and is scheduled to be released next month. Other vinyls available in the Guardians collection are Rocket Raccoon, regular Groot, Drax, Gamora, Howard the Duck, and (of course) Star Lord.

The original “Toy Story” film hit theaters almost 20 years ago. (Crazy to think, isn’t it?) Woody and Buzz captured the hearts of fans worldwide, and thus began the “Toy Story” franchise.  John Lasseter, the director of the original film and its first sequel, will be stepping in to direct the fourth installment.

The film is slated for release June 16, 2017, almost exactly a year after upcoming “Finding Dory” is scheduled to be released (it’s only off by a day!). Other upcoming films on Pixar’s immediate release timeline include “Inside Out” (June 19, 2015) and “The Good Dinosaur” (November 25, 2015).

After thinking the series had wrapped up and finished, Lasseter, along with Pixar alums and original Toy Story creators Andrew Stanton, Lee Unkrich, and Pete Docter cooked up a new idea and hit the ground running to work on the new chapter. They are joined by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack to write the script. (You may know Jones from “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation”, and McCormack starred in “The Sopranos” and the film “Must Love Dogs”.) Pixar veteran Galyn Susman (“Toy Story of TERROR!”, “Toy Story That Time Forgot”) will produce the film.

I personally feel that there is no need for any additional films. I love seeing the shorts! I think they’re great. But there’s just no need for a full-length feature film. I grew up with these movies and cared about Andy and the toys; I really don’t care about Bonnie at all, and I don’t see myself developing much of a relationship with her. It isn’t confirmed that Bonnie will be a big part in this film, but since she owns Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the gang, I think it is implied.

I’m interested to hear what you all think about this. Was the “Toy Story” franchise ready to finish, or is there more to tell?

Atlantis 2 Movie Collection

The animated action-adventure film “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” and its sequel “Atlantis: Milo’s Return” arrive on Blu-ray next Tuesday, June 11. Luckily, I got my hands on this Blu-ray combo for review. I enjoyed this film as a kid (which was actually aimed more at boys than girls) but had never seen the sequel, as with most of the direct-to-video sequels.  I was excited to reminisce and re-watch “Atlantis: The Lost Empire” and curious to see what “Milo’s Return” was all about. I was pleased and disappointed all at the same time.

Just in case you aren’t too sure what these films are about, here’s a brief overview:

“The Lost Empire” tells the tale of Milo Thatch and his desire to locate the fabled lost civilization of Atlantis, which he believes is located off the coast of Iceland. He joins a crew that is also set on finding the ruins of this ancient, but advanced, city. The crew discovers the mythical Atlantis, but all is not what it seems. It’s Milo’s mission to help this dwindling civilization and protect it from destructive outside forces. In “Milo’s Return”, Thatch returns to the surface and is reunited with some old friends. Some strange things have been happening, all of which have an Atlantean tie, and they have asked for Milo’s help to discover the reasons.

“The Lost Empire” looks amazing on Blu-ray. The animation was already great, but its appearance on Blu-ray is visually stunning. It could not look any better. The film looks like it has even more dimension and some of the visual effects look like that of a fully CGI-animated film (it is only partial CGI). The story’s pace is just as I remember it — it peaks your curiosity, it doesn’t slow down too much, and it’s consistently exciting, even offering what I considered to be a double climax. It’s unfortunate that this film did not perform better during its original release. The fact that Thatch is voiced by Michael J. Fox and the film is produced by Don Hahn (“The Lion King”, “Beauty and the Beast”) is enough of a pull for me. It’s a sign that it’s worth my time. It should also be noted that Joss Whedon (writer and director of Marvel’s “The Avengers” and the new upcoming show “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, debuting on ABC in the fall) took part in writing this film.

The same cannot be said for “Milo’s Return”. Fox did not return to voice Thatch, and there is an obvious loss of charm in James Arnold Taylor’s voicing of the character. The story is so slow and drags on. The animation is significantly lesser quality compared to the first film. It almost looked as if the animators were bummed when they learned they were a part of this sequel project. It wasn’t as fluid; the animation is choppy-looking. Atlantis no longer looks ethereal and crisp — instead it looks as dried up and dull as the southwest that is visited in this second movie. I had the hardest time finishing this movie. I found myself constantly nodding off and distracting myself with other things to do, like playing Candy Crush Saga on my phone. The running time of this film is only 80 minutes, but it felt significantly longer than the first film (96 minutes) because it was so lackluster and boring. I thought it was never going to end. No wonder why I never heard anyone mention this film (I didn’t even know it existed until recently). My pessimistic views toward direct-to-video sequels have been strengthened.

I thought maybe the bonus features wouldn’t be so bad. I was wrong. There is a segment where movie owners can learn how to speak “Atlantean”. I thought it would be kind of fun — WRONG. It was boring and actually kind of annoying. I had hoped the “Making of Atlantis” segment would be much better. It was slightly better, but I still found myself growing tired and bored. The commentary by film directors Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise was more interesting. The deleted scenes were also kind of a bummer but at the same time it made sense why they were deleted scenes. The only one I was surprised was omitted from the final film was the Viking prologue — I thought this scene would have been a fantastic opening to the film and would have provided some foreshadowing that would have made the story that much better. This prologue sequence was also exciting, which lures viewers into the film even earlier on than the opening that is currently in place. The most interesting bonus feature was the mini-discussion about the possible facts (and fiction) behind Atlantis, even though the narration was aimed at younger children.

Purchasing the Blu-ray combo pack is worth it for the first movie alone. I loved the original film and it was just as great as I remember it. There aren’t really any action-adventure animated films out there, and this one took a risk. The risk was well worth the work of the cast and crew. The second film can definitely be skipped. I wouldn’t even consider it as a good background noise film. Instead, it acts more like nails on a chalkboard. Find something else to watch.

I’m so excited that this film is coming to Blu-ray! “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” is one of my favorite films of all time, and it will be landing back on the shelves in a special 25th anniversary edition DVD/Blu-ray combo pack on March 12, 2013. The Academy Award-winning film directed by Robert Zemeckis has been restored and will look crisper than ever with clean special effects and digital restoration.

For those who have never seen the film (gasp!), “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” tells the tale of a bitter detective that hates toons after one killed his brother. The detective must prove that Roger Rabbit, a silly cartoon rabbit, is innocent after being accused of murder.

The Blu-ray release will feature some special features, including digitally restored Roger Rabbit shorts (“Tummy Trouble”, “Roller-Coaster Rabbit”, “Trail Mix-Up”), the original theatrical trailer, deleted scenes, audio commentary, and more.

I never stopped loving that Granny-Smith-apple-looking, single-googly-eyed monster Mike Wazowski, which is why I’m super excited to welcome Monsters Inc., back into theaters!

The 3D version of Pete Docter’s masterpiece (yes, I think it is a masterpiece) will be hitting theaters December 19. The film was originally released in theaters in 2001 by Pixar. (It’s been more than 10 years already. What in the…?) But even though a chunk of time has passed since the film’s original release, it’s still just as amazing as when it first debuted.

Be sure to be on the lookout for a review of the 3D version right here on Chip & Co. I’ll be seeing a special screening of the movie the weekend prior to release. Also be sure to look for tweets about the film on Chip & Co.’s Twitter account (@chipandcompany).

The re-release of this film is also getting me hyped for next year’s release of Monsters University, which tells the tale of how Mike and Sully became friends in college, not that I wasn’t super excited before. It will be fun to see these films back to back in the future! But in the mean time, we’ll see how big Sully looks in 3D. I think he’ll look like a furry, cuddly Hulk.

First off, I’d like to thank Chip for letting me review this one. ‘Pocahontas’ has always had a super special place in my heart. When I was 3 1/2 my parents and I won a trip to New York City for the release of the film. I’ve loved the film pretty much my entire life. Having the chance to watch it remastered in Blu-Ray was so exciting for me and I’m glad I had the opportunity.

If you haven’t seen ‘Pocahontas’ in a long time, here’s a (very quick) refresher: The film tells the story of free-spirited Native American Pocahontas and her tribe’s encounter with settlers from England. Pocahontas falls for white-skinned settler Captain John Smith, helping the English and Native Americans set aside their differences.

I had actually never seen ‘Pocahontas II’ until I got to review the films. I was a little nervous watching it since I hadn’t heard the best things about it, but it actually wasn’t as awful as I was told. It wasn’t nearly as good as the original film, but it wasn’t completely un-watchable.

In ‘Pocahontas II’, Pocahontas journeys to London with John Rolfe on behalf of the King. There, she tries to create peace between the Native Americans and the new English civilization of Jamestown in America, but Governor Ratcliffe interferes.

The original film on Blu-Ray — gorgeous. I love the way animation looks on Blu-Ray and this is no exception. The sound is crisp and the movie is just as amazing as I remember it as a child. The bonus features for the film were a nice addition but I didn’t spend too much time with them. I was more concerned with moving onto the next film. The quality of ‘Pocahontas II’ isn’t amazing, since it was released by Disney Toon Studios, but it’s not completely awful. That being said, I wouldn’t go out of my way to purchase this film (and I’m sure many others wouldn’t either), so it makes sense that it’s bundled with the original ‘Pocahontas’.

I was really excited to get to explore the special features that Disney brought to ‘Pocahontas’. Their track record with many of the animated features is pretty great across the board, and I’m happy to say that they didn’t skimp here. There is really interesting commentary track, featuring the directors of the film Eric Goldberg and Mike Gabriel, and producer James Pentecost. It’s standard, but I learned quite a few things I didn’t know, which I can’t complain about it. It’s a very fun listen, and fans will very much enjoy it. The best feature on the disc though is ‘Drawing Inspiration: The Lost Story of Hiawatha’. This feature has Eric Goldberg narrating the original storyboards of the scrapped Walt Disney animated Hiawatha film. It’s an incredible behind the scenes look that shows a beautiful behind the scenes look at a history that almost was. As a Disney geek, there is nothing more amazing than getting to see something like this, and this feature, while only about twelve minutes long, is just incredible. To see a lost piece of Disney history brought to life, in a new way of sorts, is a truly surreal experience. There is also fifteen minutes of deleted scenes, plus another deleted song ‘If I Never Knew You’, for about twenty minutes altogether of deleted content from the film. The song is good, and so are many of the scenes, but they don’t add too much to the overall story, and I could see why they were taken out. And of course, if you have internet, you can go into the virtual vault which lets you access even more special features, many from previous versions of the movie that have been released, that weren’t brought over to this disc. While I wish Disney would have ported them over, I’m glad I can access them at all, and the virtual vault is perfect for that.

Regardless of how you feel about ‘Pocahontas II’ it’s definitely worth picking up the Blu-Ray for the original film alone. This classic needs to be in your Blu-Ray collection!

Jessica lives in Orange County and practically lives at Disneyland when she isn’t at work or school. Her favorite princess is Belle and loves drinking “apple drank” (AKA Red’s Apple Freeze) in CarsLand.

I was lucky enough to be invited to attend California Adventure’s grand reopening this past weekend. If you’re planning a visit sometime in the future, you’re definitely in for a treat.

Hundreds of people filled up the esplanade area, lined up to get into DCA for a chance to see the opening ceremony. The lines zig-zagged for what seemed like forever! Before the ceremony began, I was lucky enough to be standing right next to the new “Storytellers” statue. Someone very special came over to pose for a photo with young Walt — John Lasseter! I was definitely at the right place at the right time.

The ceremony began with a performance by the new Red Car News Boys cast (they’re wonderful). Mickey joined them onstage to greet Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger.

With the newsies looking on from the sides of the stage, Iger spoke about Walt’s journey to California and how that man with a dream created so much magic that exists today. After some chit chat with Mickey and being joined by other Disney characters, DCA was officially open.

Cars Land cast members led the official Cars Land rope drop. It was a gas hose! Guests were anxious to explore Radiator Springs and closely followed the cast members to the new land. The Fast Pass time for Radiator Springs Racers kept getting later and later as guests snatched up their FPs as quickly as they could. (Later in the day, the line would grow to be approximately seven hours long!)

While the park was crowded, opening day was so much fun. I want to take this little moment to give a few shout outs:

Erin Glover — thank you SO much for allowing me to attend as media. I had a blast. Everything was incredible. The entire time I was there I kept thinking, “Wow, I’m so lucky to be able to do this!” You’ve made this a truly magical experience for a young blogger! I look forward to keeping in touch with you and hopefully meeting you in person at the next event. You’re awesome.

Kevin A. Healy from DOSArtistry.com — thank you for playing photographer for me on opening day. There’s no way I could have gotten photos like yours. I just don’t have that kind of skill. You all can see Kevin’s photos in my other DCA post.

Shaun Brookhyser, Mike Pero, and Luke Meeker — you guys managed to make crazy busy opening day so much fun. Thanks for hanging with me and dealing with me all day long. I didn’t think such a busy, hectic day could be so amazing. Can’t wait to do it all again.

Be on the lookout for my other post with photos from Buena Vista Street and Cars Land!

I’m very excited to announce that Disney is launching the Art of Frankenweenie exhibition this month, which is set to tour seven countries! Tim Burton’s latest stop-motion masterpiece arrives in theaters on October 5, 2012.

The exhibition’s tour kicks off in Barcelona, Spain, June 18 through the 21st at CineEurope. It will make its way to the US by heading to Comic Con San Diego in San Diego, California, July 11-15. Once the tour is complete, the exhibition will have visited seven countries, including Mexico, Spain, Canada, France, the US, England, and Japan.

The exhibition will show the filmmaking process of the stop-motion film. There will be sketches by Burton, props, and puppets from the film on display.

What makes this so exciting for me is that, A) I love Tim Burton films and I’ve been looking forward to this one, and B) Patrick and I will be covering Comic Con, so we’ll be able to see it and write about it! Woohoo! I can’t wait to share it with you all in July!

I remember the very first time I ever saw “The Princess Diaries”. It was for my birthday and I had all of my closest girlfriends with me. My mom took us to the AMC at Downtown Disney out here by Disneyland. We all wore tiaras while we watched the film.

I loved the film then, and watching it on Blu-Ray reminded me how much I enjoy the film. I think I’ve always enjoyed it because Mia is such a relatable character – she’s dorky and quirky and doesn’t quite know how to handle herself. She’s a regular girl that finds out she’s not as ordinary as she thought.

I knew I already loved the first film, but I also got to see the second film, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”, for the very first time. The first one is the better of the two, but it’s still a cute, fun film that’s great for younger aspiring princesses.

The films themselves looked fantastic on Blu-Ray. The landscapes of Genovia in the second film stood out in the Blu-Ray format. (The gardens especially looked gorgeous!) I also liked the fact that both films were on one Blu-Ray disc; it was a lot more convenient and I didn’t have to get up to switch discs. (Sure, it sounds lazy, but it made the viewing experience that much better.) There are some silly bloopers and outtakes on the Blu-Ray, but the majority of all of the special features are on the DVD copies.

The first DVD disc has the first “Princess Diaries” film as well as outtakes, deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes featurette, music videos for songs featured in the film, and commentary by Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway. The second DVD is the second movie along with bloopers, deleted scenes, the music video for “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson, commentary by Andrews and film director Garry Marshall, and a personality quiz to find your inner princess. The deleted scenes are probably my favorite features because it gives an idea of what the films could have been, and sometimes you can see why the scenes were deleted. (But I won’t deny that the personality quiz is a fun, silly thing to do!)

I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to review these films. It brought back so many memories! But I’m still in denial that the first film came out ten years ago.

The special combo pack is exclusively available at Target (one of my favorite stores ever!). Be sure to pick up your copy today to watch with your own little princess!

Jessica is currently in denial that she’s not a princess after watching these two films. At the moment, she’s waiting for Cars Land and Buena Vista Street at California Adventure to open so she can take ridiculous amounts of photos for you all.

The Princess Diaries film synopsis: Mia Thermopolis is the average teenager – sweet, a little geeky and pretty much invisible to everyone with theexception of her mother, best friend Lilly and Lilly’s older brother Michael. Making it through high school without throwing up is a challenge in itself for Mia, so it doesn’t come as welcome news when her estranged grandmother shows up out of the blue and calmly informs her that she is in fact the heir to the throne of a European country called Genovia. Suddenly Mia’s life is thrown into complete overload. She’s being taught about scarves, waves and pears in order to become a perfect princess, she gets a makeover and a tough looking yet sweet bodyguard/limo driver called Joe. Things get out of hand when the media gets a hold of the story and suddenly Mia is thrust into the spotlight in both the newspapers and in school. On top of all that Mia has a choice to make. She must decide by Genovia’s Independence Day Ball whether she longs to relinquish her claim on the throne or to become the princess and heir to the throne and father and grandmother want her to be.

The Princess Diaries 2 film synopsis:  Starring the irresistible Anne Hathaway and Academy Award winner Julie Andrews (Best Actress, Mary Poppins), this modern-day fairy tale picks up right where The Princess Diaries left off!  As future queen of Genovia, Princess Mia (Hathaway) has everything a girl could want – except the magical romance she’s always dreamed of.  But soon, Mia’s shocked to discover that she needs to get married right now or her family will lose the crown! Comic complications rule the day in this delightful family story about finding out who you really are and discovering what it takes to make your dreams come true!

Tomorrow morning marks a very special day for Alice Davis: she has earned her place on Main Street with a window. Employed by Walt himself, Davis is known for developing costumes for the theme parks, films, and television programs. She was married to Marc Davis, an Imagineer and one of Disney’s “Nine Old Men” animators.

Davis’ work in Disneyland park ranges from the costumes the children wear on “it’s a small world” to the dirty, raggedy attire worn by the pirates in Pirates of the Caribbean. She retired from WED (Walt Disney Enterprises, now known as Walt Disney Imagineering) in 1978 but still consults on film projects, most recently Disney/Pixar’s “Up”.

Davis was named a Disney Legend in 2004. Her window will be right next to her husband’s.

I will be there tomorrow morning (before school!) and I plan to tweet live during the event. You can follow me on Twitter at @ocswaynee to follow along with the event as it happens.

Marvel Comics and Benefit Cosmetics have joined together to bring the world a new female comic book hero, SpyGal. SpyGal’s persona is based off the POREfessional product from Benefit Cosmetics, which features a vintage female hero with a pore-zapping ray gun.

I’m excited to see these comics. I’ve been looking for new comics to read, and having one featuring a respectable female figure is really catching my attention (not all female superheroes need skimpy outfits!). I plan on getting my hands on these as soon as I can.

Here’s the official press release from Marvel:

Benefit Cosmetics & Marvel Custom Solutions Transform Beauty Bestseller into Comic Book Action Hero

Get ready for thrills, frills & espionage! Marvel Custom Solutions, the custom publishing division of Marvel Entertainment, and Benefit Cosmetics, the San Francisco beauty brand known for its fun instant beauty solutions, have co-created SpyGal, the FIRST EVER beauty-inspired comic book hero.

SpyGal’s wise-cracking, pore-zapping persona was modeled after the POREfessional pore minimizing primer. With over 1 million products sold worldwide, the POREfessional is an international sensation. The POREfessional packaging evokes a vintage female action figure complete with a pore-zapping ray gun and touch-up pro case. “The superpowers of our bestselling pore minimizer, the POREfessional, created such an international sensation, we knew it was destined for greatness!,” explained Julie Bell, EVP Global Marketing at Benefit Cosmetics. “Marvel, the world’s top storytellers, helped us bring our action hero SpyGal to life in the first ever beauty-inspired comic book.”

Inspired by SpyGal’s covert mission to empower women around the world, Marvel and Benefit assembled a dynamic creative team including fan favorite writer James Asmus (Uncanny X-Men,Captain America) and acclaimed artist Phil Noto (Avengers: The Origin, X-Men Origins) to bring SpyGal to life in her collectors’ item debut comic book. Together they seamlessly blended the trademark humor of Benefit with the iconic action & drama of Marvel storytelling to create a witty, globe-trotting espionage adventure.

“It’s exciting to bring Benefit Cosmetics and Marvel Custom Solutions together for such a historic collaboration,” said John Dokes, Marvel SVP of Integrated Sales and Marketing, Publishing and Digital Media. “SpyGal is a dynamic, nuanced hero for a new generation and combining that with the unparalleled storytelling of Marvel brings fans one of the most unique comics they’ll read all year.”

In addition to pulse-pounding beauty action, this very first issue of SpyGal also delivers an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek into the collaborative process that transformed our globe-trottin’, face-savin’ secret agent into a comic book hero. Plus, fans can use the FREE Marvel AR app to access video content from the glamorous world of makeup using their smartphone or tablet!

“Marvel and Benefit both know that humor and intelligence can be a heroes’ greatest strength, especially when faced with life’s modern problems,” said Marvel Custom Solutions Editor Bill Rosemann. “SpyGal dispenses justice, beauty tips and witty life advice with an effortless grace, while also grappling with work and dating worries. On Friday, April 13th, TCM and D23 screened “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. The screening was for TCM’s annual classic film festival and welcomed special guest, and star of the film, Kirk Douglas.

The experience started with picking up our media passes at the Roosevelt Hotel. I had always wanted to visit the Roosevelt, as it’s said to be haunted by Marilyn Monroe. (Visiting the Roosevelt was actually on my bucket list. Now I just need to stay the night!) The hotel was beautiful inside. I felt like a giddy little girl while we walked through it. Then it was time to head out and wait in the line that snaked down Hollywood Boulevard. It was raining outside, but the folks from TCM were kind enough to provide us with umbrellas to use while standing outside. (Thanks again!)

When we walked into the theater, I had to make sure I wasn’t leaving a trail of drool anywhere. It’s gorgeous in there. Absolutely gorgeous. Grauman’s Chinese Theater was another place on my bucket list to visit. (I got to cross off two things in one day. That’s pretty awesome.) When we were in the screening room, I couldn’t stop staring at the ceiling. It was so ornate and pretty. Next thing I knew Mr. Douglas was coming out onstage.

Photo by Jason Merritt, courtesy of TCM.

After a brief chat with Douglas, the film began. This experience was one of a kind for me. I had never seen the film prior to the screening. I remember loving the attraction at Disneyland as a child but I don’t recall ever seeing the movie. This first viewing experience for me was quite special — I was at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theater AND Kirk Douglas was there. I’m pretty sure the only other experience that could even compare to this one was being at the film’s world premiere in 1954.

I’d like to say a big thank you to Chelsea Barredo and the rest of the staff at the festival for taking care of us. I enjoyed attending the festival and hope to be back next year.

Recently I had the privilege of listening to a lecture by the man that helped guide Disneyland to great success: Jack Lindquist. Disneyland’s very first president came to speak to my Walt Disney and Charles Darwin: In Pursuit of Happiness and Knowledge course at Chapman University. I was blown away by what this man had to say.

Since we are not allowed to have any kind of recording device in this class, I jotted down some notes from the lecture. I thought I would share some of what I have written with you all. I apologize in advance if there is lack of structure.

Mr. Lindquist started off by telling his origins. He came to work for Walt after leaving an ad agency in LA. His very first job working directly for Walt was writing remarks for Walt to say with Shirley Temple at the castle walk-through opening. He recalled seeing Walt lift his eyebrow, as he always did while he was thinking, and question who wrote it. His first instinct was to deny it was his doing, but he stepped up and claimed the work as his. Walt didn’t give any remarks of disapproval; he had succeeded at his first assignment.

When it came time to start figuring out the plans for Disneyland, the Stanford Research Institute went to find the right spot for the park. The top two contenders had been in the San Fernando Valley and the border of Anaheim and Santa Ana down here in Orange County. The Anaheim location was chosen. One of Lindquist’s direct roles in Disneyland was helping bring Snow White to life as an attraction. There was a lot of work to be done if this park was going to be any sort of success.

“We were lucky that we were ignorant; because we were ignorant, we did things we couldn’t do.”

Disneyland finally opened on July 17, 1955. While we would like to think that the grand opening of the park was wonderful, it was anything but. The weather was sweltering hot, there were no drinking fountains, and the asphalt was still sticky. The live broadcast on ABC was disorganized and all over the place. Anything that could go wrong, went wrong that day. Journalists wrote that Disneyland was a failure. Lindquist recalled it took two years to get all opening day media to return to Disneyland after such a terrible opening day. They had a hard time believing this next trip would be any better than Black Sunday, as it came to be known.

Lindquist was also involved the first hard-ticketed event at Disneyland: New Year’s Eve, 1957. The park needed to market this party to young people that couldn’t go out and drink; there weren’t places for underage people to go for New Year’s that didn’t involve drinking. Tickets were sold at $3.95 each. The challenge was figuring out how to sell the tickets. At that time, tickets weren’t sold in advance for the parks, so they had to figure out how to market this event. Thousands and thousands of people weren’t going to buy their ticket the day of. So, they made deals with local businesses to sell the tickets. In the end, 12,000 tickets were sold and the event was a success. This sparked the idea of selling advanced tickets in the future.

“Disneyland was one adventure after another.”

Throughout the years, Lindquist was involved in all sorts of projects. Grad Nite started happening after Alhambra High School parents requested to have their graduating seniors have grad nite in the park, since they wanted a safe place for them to have fun on the night of graduation. The Disneyland execs thought it was great that they wanted to go to Disneyland, but there was a big problem: there were only a few hundred graduating seniors, not nearly enough to justify having the park open all hours of the night. That’s when other high schools in the area were brought in; there needed to be an attendance of at least 5,000 students. Anaheim Police Department thought the Grad Nite was a terrible idea — thousands of crazy teenagers would cause a ruckus in the park. But Lindquist and the others moved forward and made Grad Nite happen. Attendees were required to dress up nicely, be in the park by 11PM and not let out until 5AM the next morning. Students had to sign in and out, and there had to be one adult chaperon per 20 students. In the beginning, students were allowed to transport themselves, but later it was enforced that all students must arrive by bus. While Lindquist reminisced about helping Grad Nite come to be, he made a comment about the current state of Grad Nite and how he feels they may discontinue the event. (I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with that.)

One story in particular that Lindquist (and the class) found hilarious was about a female student attending Grad Nite. She wore a one-shouldered dress and was dancing with guy after guy, who would rest his head on her shoulder. It seemed strange. Lindquist sent over a female security guard to escort the young lady backstage and ask what was going on. Turns out she had a flask of gin hidden in her dress, with a straw running up through her bra. She had been charging money for guys to drink.

Later, Lindquist went on to be involved with the other parks — Walt Disney World, Tokyo and Paris. He was also involved with Marty Sklar in the placement of the famous “Partners” statue in the hub. Lindquist also helped name Fantasmic! After 38 years of service, he retired. He now currently resides in Orange County, not far from the parks. He recalled the most pivotal point of his entire Disneyland career was the first Christmas in the park. He was walking down empty Main Street U.S.A. when he came across a family on their way out. They stopped to admire the window displays. The little girl looked up at her mother and said, “This was better than having Santa come.”

At the end of it all, he graciously signed my copy of his book In Service to the Mouse: My Unexpected Journey to Becoming Disneyland’s First President and shook my hand. I had taken a photo with him with my phone, but technology isn’t reliable 100% of the time. Getting the chance to exchange words with a man that worked directly with Walt and was so involved in something that has been such a huge part of my life was an amazing and overwhelming feeling. This was a once in a lifetime lecture. I’ll never forget it.
