The nearest ocean is a good hour’s drive away in either direction from Walt Disney World. Although the Resort is landlocked, all is not lost for Guests who love the open waters.

I feel like Bubba Blue from Forrest Gump, except instead of spouting shrimp dishes I’m listing boating options. You’ve got…

  • Pedal boating
  • Canoeing
  • Kayaking
  • Motor boating
  • Sailboating
  • Parasailing (pulled by a boat)
  • Tubing (pulled by a boat)
  • Water skiing (pulled by a boat)
  • Wake boarding
  • Specialty cruises
  • And of course, Friendships and ferries

No kidding! I’m telling you, Walt Disney World truly has something for everyone. Here, Captain Mickey and Sailor Donald know they are not the only ones who like to set sail, so they’ve arranged plenty of options for your seafaring hearts.

Friendships that cruise Seven Seas Lagoon, World Showcase Lagoon, and the waterways between Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios and between Downtown Disney and the Port Orleans Resorts, as well as the larger sternwheelers on Seven Seas, are all part of the complementary Walt Disney World Transportation System, carrying Guests where they need to go. But if you’re seeking a bit more water world adventure, it can be arranged.

WDW searacers

Pedal boats are available at Disney’s Caribbean Beach and Old Key West resorts. Grab a canoe at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground or the bay at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort. Kayak the waterways of Disney’s Port Orleans Resort and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. Motorized boats include sea racers, whalers, and pontoons, and are available at a variety of docks across Resort property. Try out a 12-foot sailboat at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, and take on a 13-foot catamaran at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. Parasail, water ski, tube, and wakeboard at Sammy Duvall’s Watersports Centre on Bay Lake for beautiful views of Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Magic Kingdom park. And enjoy a specialty cruise—celebrate a landmark birthday, commemorate a golden anniversary, or just enjoy a fireworks spectactular—on Bay Lake, Seven Seas Lagoon, or Crescent Lake aboard a pontoon or yacht for a private outing full of memories that last a lifetime.

See! I told you there’s a boating option for just about anyone! If you’d like to know more, call (407) WDW-PLAY or (407) 939-7529 for more information or to arrange reservations.

Yourfirstvisit.net is astonishingly helpful in ensuring both first time and repeat visitors have a magical visit to Walt Disney World. Highly recommended.” ~ Lee Cockerell, former Executive Vice President of Operations for the Walt Disney World® Resort

Walt Disney World Resort is an amazing place to visit, but it’s so big and contains so much magic that it can easily overwhelm the first-time Guest. If you take your first Disney trip without adequate preparation, you might be so miserable you vow never to return—and you would miss out on a lifetime of incredible experiences that only Walt Disney World can offer.

If you’re having that first-trip-planning anxiety right now, don’t fret! There is a solution. Yourfirstvisit.net provides exact instructions—and next best options—for first-time Walt Disney World visitors to help them know what to expect and know how to avoid things that can zap the magic right out of the trip. The site, which just had its fifth birthday, now serves more than 200,000 visitors a month, and is growing like crazy.

On the home page, Dave of yourfirstvisit.net addresses the best times to visit Walt Disney World, how long to stay, how old/tall your children should be, where to stay, how much to budget, when your plans need to be firm, how and where to eat, budgeting your time, families with special circumstances, and a myriad of additional resources. Other pages (more than 1,500 pages of deeper content, with new material published almost daily) fulfill the “next best options” by ranking in order stuff such as the best weeks of the year to visit and the best hotels. Returning visitors may especially like the Week Picker, which is one of the few pages on the site designed particularly for them.

According to yourfirstvisit.net, crowd levels are the first factor to consider when planning a trip to Walt Disney World. Why? Let’s look at Magic Kingdom, the Resort’s signature park. Dave tells us Magic Kingdom’s attendance varies from about 20,000 people on its slowest days to 90,000+ during the Christmas holidays. On average, the park can process 40,000 people per hour on its attractions, so you can see how higher numbers would affect wait times. Increased wait times means you get to do fewer fun things. (It also means grumpier travelers, tired feet and legs, and increased agitation. Add those three together and you get negative happiness at the Most Magical Place on Earth!)

Yourfirstvisit.net’s detailed crowd calendars help you save literally days of waiting in line, and they provide suggestions for how to maximize Disney magic even if busy times of the year are the only dates your family can travel. Dave also takes into consideration other trip planning factors, such as seasonal pricing, the hurricane season, ride closures, and special events in his suggested travel dates.

Also extremely beneficial are Dave’s suggested itineraries. He factors in budgets, crowds, length of stay, time of stay, and must-do activities and offers you ideal plans OR guides you to create your own touring plan with his helpful tools. Dave includes a comprehensive guide to rides and attractions too, so you know in advance what’s where and how to map your days at the parks.

An overview of Disney Resort hotels is also included, with great attention given not only to the price factor, but also to kid-friendliness, convenience of location, and additional amenities each has to offer. Dave has thought of everything! He has suggestions for large families, military families, and even “tightwads,” lol! He also has a listing of where not to stay. And Dave truly knows what he’s talking about, because he has stayed at every hotel on property—and in each type of room offered at each.

Probably the handiest tool for first-timers on yourfirstvisit.net is the step-by-step to-do list. Dave goes through a checklist of instructions for you, including specific times to book dining reservations and tips regarding special room requests. Honestly, though, if you follow Dave’s instructions at yourfirstvisit.net for your first family visit to Walt Disney World, you will save thousands of dollars, avoid dozens of hours waiting in line and prevent yourself many headaches, and you will allow yourself and your family to have the most magical experience of your lives!

MORE ABOUT DAVE:  Dave Shute (who writes the site under the pen name “David Hobart”) completed most of the work for a PhD in English lit, focusing on Shakespeare, before switching to an MBA program and becoming a strategy consultant. He also has a lifelong amateur interest in architecture and design. He brings this combination of insight into story, poetics, space, business and numbers to his Disney and Disney World observations.

Disneynature has done it again! From the studio that brought you the captivating films earth, oceans, African Cats, and Chimpanzee comes Wings of Life,  “a stunning adventure full of intrigue, drama and mesmerizing beauty.”

Wings of Life is the latest documentary from Disneynature. Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress, Meryl Streep, the film takes an up-close look at some of the littlest things on our planet that make the biggest impact on life as we know it.

Unlike its Disneynature predecessors that followed the daily lives and life spans of particular species, Wings of Life focuses (and very closely, I might add) on the correlation blossoms, birds, bees, bats, and butterflies have on the earth’s life cycle—how their activities, that may seem trivial to us, affect not only plants and animals in nature, but also food provision for humankind.

The story is told with evolutionary overtones, using the theory to explain how certain creatures and/or plants adapted over time. While I do not subscribe to that belief system personally, I did not find it offensive or overwhelming. I found that once the dialog moved past that portion, seeing creation in action was really quite captivating! You see the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, from mating habits to egg-laying to larva and metamorphosis. You see hummingbirds battle for territory. You see bumble bees “buzz pollinate” flowers. You see bats feed with their hours-old infants clutching their bellies. The details and clarity are spectacular!

From an educator’s perspective, Wings of Life is a nice introduction to “the birds and the bees” discussion. My elementary-aged children watched the film with me, and actually asked several questions throughout the viewing. I was disappointed there were no featured extras on the disc or online as there have been with previous Disneynature releases, but overall I found Wings of Life a refreshing—and beautiful—reminder that the little things do matter.

The DVD/Blu-ray combo will be released on April 16, 2013, for the suggested retail price of $27.99 (available for pre-order online). As with previous Disneynature films, a portion of the proceeds from Wings of Life benefit the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. And in case you were wondering, there is another film in the works! The Wings of Life DVD contains a sneak peek at the upcoming Disneynature Bears, to be released on Earth Day, 2014.

Spring has sprung—although a lot of areas across the U.S. aren’t exactly feeling it yet—and while Walt Disney World Resort is smack in the middle of the Spring Break craze, we’re already looking ahead to what’s next.

Memorial Day will fall on Monday, May 27, this year. It’s a great time of year to visit the Parks, with perfectly balanced spring/summer weather. Plus, many kids across the nation are still in school, so the crowd levels haven’t yet peaked. So what kinds of Memorial holiday happenings can you expect to unofficially kick off summer fun at the Disney Parks? Well, while there are no specific Memorial Day holiday observances at Walt Disney World, the Parks will offer extended weekend hours, and some Resort events will make the holiday extra memorable.

Guests visiting Magic Kingdom can observe the Flag Retreat, a [somewhat] formal ceremony that is held each day at 5:00 p.m. in Town Square near the park entrance. It is conducted by Walt Disney World Security members, Main Street Operations personnel, the Dapper Dans, and the Barber Shop Quartet, along with a randomly selected Guest who is a veteran of the United States military. It’s a very touching event and a special time to take pride in the nation that flag represents.

A rather non-patriotic activity that will already be in progress is the annual Star Wars Weekends, taking place from May 17 to June 9 this year at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Celebrity Guest appearances, parades, and autograph signings are scheduled to occur, and Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite Star Wars garb.

If you’re a sports fan, head on over to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex for the Disney Memorial Day Soccer Shootout and the Disney Sun & Surf Baseball Bash presented by Rawlings®.  Both events promote youth sports participation and feature hundreds of teams competing in programs of national recognition.  Last year, the Soccer Shootout attracted over 500 teams that played more than 900 matches in just three days!

No matter what you choose to do this Memorial Day weekend, please remember what—rather, WHO—we are celebrating. Take time to show your appreciation to the brave men and women who sacrifice their lives daily to serve us, to protect our national security, and to defend our homeland: members of the United States Armed Forces. And if you are headed to Walt Disney World, have a magical, memorable holiday!

Call me crazy (you have before!), but I like downtime at Walt Disney World. I didn’t used to be that way. The first few times my family visited Walt Disney World, we pushed ourselves to the limits, trying to do everything we possibly could. Every moment that wasn’t spent sleeping was devoted to park time. And it led to many miserable days—we refer to them as Grumpy days—when everyone’s on edge and the Disney magic is more annoying than it is uplifting. That’s when we started searching out some hidden ways to get the Disney experience without wearing ourselves thin. What we discovered is that at Walt Disney World, even the mundane is pixie-dusted.

Did you know there are fishin’ holes on property? Grab your rod and reel (or rent them on site) and kick up your heels for some old-fashioned, dockside fishing in the well-stocked waters of Fort Wilderness Campgrounds & Cabins (at the Bike Barn) or do some cane-pole fishing at Port Orleans Riverside’s Old Man Island. If that’s a little too down downtime and it just doesn’t reel you in, you can venture out on the water for a guided excursion.

Walt Disney World Guests can experience bass fishing at its finest all year round with guided fishing excursions on Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon, Village Lake, Crescent Lake, and World Showcase Lagoon. Whether you’re a veteran angler or an amateur hobbyist, you’ll enjoy these options. Choose from Guided Bass Fishing on a 21-foot Tracker pontoon with up to five Guests and Bass Nitro Fishing on a Nitro Bass boat for one or two people. Two- and four-hour excursions are offered, and when available, an extra hour may be added at the Marina. Solo fishermen may book an afternoon excursion at a reduced rate.

Fishing excursions are available at:

  • Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground
  • Caribbean Beach Resort
  • Coronado Springs Resort
  • Contemporary Resort
  • Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • Old Key West Resort
  • Polynesian Resort
  • Port Orleans Resort – Riverside
  • Wilderness Lodge
  • Yacht Club Resort
  • Downtown Disney Marketplace

All Walt Disney World Resort dockside and fishing excursions are catch-and-release. Excursions include an experienced guide; rod, reel, and tackle; bait; non-alcoholic beverages (no food, beverages, or coolers allowed); and one year BASS (Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) membership (one per excursion), which includes 11 issues of Bassmaster Magazine.

Excursion reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance by calling (407) 939-BASS or (407) 939-2277, or by submitting a BASS Reservation Request Form online now and a Fishing Coordinator will contact you in 12 to 24 hours.

Now, next time you find yourself or your family floundering to find the fun in all that Disney magic, you’ll know how to avoid a Grumpy day at Walt Disney World Resort!

Phineas and Ferb Animal Agents

PHINEAS AND FERB: ANIMAL AGENTS coming to DVD February 26, 2013!
12 Adventures Featuring Perry the Platypus and His Animal Comrades

How well does anyone really know their pet…or ANY animal? Behind a cute and/or cuddly exterior there may lurk a cunning crime-fighter with a brown fedora, a top-secret identity, and a license to thrill!

Perry the Platypus, family pet of the Flynn-Flethchers, may seem like an animal who “doesn’t really do much,” but when no one’s looking and before anyone asks, “Where’s Perry?” he dashes down a hidden passage to answer the O.W.C.A. (Organization Without a Cool Acronym) call. In Phineas and Ferb: Animal Agents, Perry—aka Agent P—is joined onscreen by his fellow secret animal avengers in 12 different episodes of the popular animated television series.

Adventures include:

  • “Journey to the Center of Candace”
  • “Traffic Cam Caper”
  • “Bowl-R-Rama Drama”
  • “Vanessasary Roughness”
  • “Isabella and the Temple of Sap”
  • “Cheer Up Candace”
  • “Robot Rodeo”
  • “Lotsa Latkes”
  • “Agent Doof”
  • “Where’s Perry Part 1”
  • “Where’s Perry Part 2
  • “What’d I Miss”

My kids were ecstatic when I told them, “Hey kids, I know what we’re gonna do today! Watch Phineas and Ferb!” They were thrilled to find some of their favorite episodes on the disc, like “Robot Rodeo,” in which many alter-egoed pets appear to thwart their nemeses at the evil scientist –inator convention, and “Isabella and the Temple of Sap,” in which we get the unusual opportunity to follow a minor character throughout her day. It’s also a bonus that my daughter’s favorite O.W.C.A. agent, Pinky the Chihuahua, is featured.

Also on the DVD are special bonus airings of the animated/live action “Take Two with Phineas and Ferb,” a talk show hosted by the inventive brothers that spotlights the many talents of their special guests (Cedric the Entertainer, David Beckham, Jason Segel, Shaun White, Miss Piggy, and Ben Stiller), and a few sneak peeks. And included with the video is a cool spy activity kit complete with paper binoculars, agent trading cards, an O.W.C.A. I.D. badge, and instructions on how to be a secret agent, all of which my kids promptly put to good use!

Disney’s Phineas and Ferb: Animal Agents (Rated TV-G in the United States and PG in Canada) will be available on DVD February 26, 2013. Run time is approximately 155 minutes, including special features and bonus options. Suggested retail price for the 1-disc DVD is $19.99 in the United States and $24.99 in Canada.

Be sure to check out my chat with Phineas and Ferb creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh to see what Perry and the crew have been up to lately and to find out what’s coming next!

Jodi Whisenhunt is the author of MAGICAL MOUSE SCHOOLHOUSE: Learn While You Play at Walt Disney World Resort, and operates a blog by the same title. Her book is available for purchase at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and  CreateSpace. (Kindle and Nook versions also available.) Come, think outside the textbook and stretch the walls of your home classroom with Walt Disney entertainment!

Mickey Minnie Valentine

Valentine’s Day is days away! Last week, I showed you some heartwarming, homemade Valentine gift ideas from Disney’s Spoonful.com, and today I’m showing off a few of the projects my kids made. They’re very simple and require few materials, most of which you probably already have on-hand. They make great gifts for moms, dads, grandparents, friends, and even favorite teachers!

Mickey Mouse heart cookies

Project #1: Mickey Heart Cookies
You will need: sugar cookie dough (either buy pre-packaged or make your own recipe), heart shaped cookie cutter, red food coloring, small tube of white icing, and dark chocolate candy melts.

What to do:
1)      Prepare cookie dough and roll out to about ¼-inch thick.
2)      Use heart shaped cookie cutter to form heart shapes in dough; place on baking sheet. (Follow recipe directions for baking.)
3)      When cookies are cooled completely, prepare chocolate by following package directions for melting.
4)      Dip rounded top half of heart cookies into chocolate and place on plate or serving tray. Use white icing to mark two “buttons” on the remaining red portion to look like Mickey’s pants.
5)      Share with your sweetheart and enjoy!

Matchbox Valentines

Project #2: Matchbox Love Notes
You will need: cardboard match box (the type that slides out like a drawer), gift wrap or tissue paper scraps, glue, decorations, piece of paper, pen or marker, brass paper binder brads, and scissors.

What to do:
1)      Remove matches from boxes and safely store elsewhere.
2)      Spread glue on all sides of box, and cover with wrap gift wrap or tissue.
3)      Embellish box with stickers, adhesive jewels, markers, or other decorations. Set aside.
4)      Insert a brass paper binder brad into the “drawer” of the box to use as a knob or handle. Insert “drawer” into box.
5)      Cut small piece of paper, write a Valentine message on it, and fold and insert it in box drawer.
6)      Deliver to your Valentine!

Tissue paper flower

Project #3: Paper Flower Bouquet
You will need: tissue paper, chenille craft sticks, and scissors.

What to do:
1)      Cut 8 to 12 4-inch squares of tissue paper.
2)      Fold each piece of paper back and forth like folding a paper fan.
3)      Stack all accordion-folded pieces together.
4)      Bend 1-1/2 inch hook on chenille stick, wrap around stacked papers, and twist to secure.
5)      Fluff each folded piece by twisting it one half-turn. The opened pieces make a beautiful blossom.
6)      Repeat the steps to make several blooms for a bouquet, and surprise your honey with home “grown” carnations!

Last week, my daughter and I made these three together: Friendship Rings, Pencil Toppers, and Mad Love Mad Libs Scrolls. You can find them over at Magical Mouse Schoolhouse!

LINCOLN Spurs Educational Campaign

All Middle and High Schools Across the U.S. to Receive DVDs of Steven Spielberg’s film as Part of Education Outreach

Jim Berk, Chief Executive Officer of Participant Media, announced Monday that Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed film, LINCOLN, will be distributed to all middle and high schools, both public and private, throughout the United States when the film becomes available on DVD. Participant Media, DreamWorks Pictures and Fox/Newscorp are funding the unparalleled effort with Disney In-Home creating the packaging and Disney Educational Productions handling distribution.

Participant Media conducted a standard research study for LINCOLN prior to the film’s release, which revealed that more than half of Americans think it’s important to learn about Lincoln, but two-thirds say they know little to nothing about him. This clearly indicates a need to better educate our nation’s students about the 16th president’s accomplishments. The tremendous positive response the film has received from educators, politicians, historians and the general public testifies to the fact that an understanding and knowledge of history can be an enlightening and powerful tool for all Americans.

Abraham Lincoln

As the film gained popularity in theaters, director Steven Spielberg received letters from teachers asking if it could be available in their classrooms. He says he and his associates realized the educational value LINCOLN could have would benefit not only adult audiences who have studied Lincoln’s life in history books, but also students in the classroom as well. As a result, schools across the country will gain new knowledge and better understanding of a man who greatly shaped this nation.

Compiled and designed by Disney Educational Productions, the DVD package each school will receive includes an Educator’s Guide complete with lesson plans relating to the significance of Abraham Lincoln’s leadership and of that period in our nation’s history.

Today, February 12, in honor of Lincoln’s Birthday, Participant Media’s Social Action Campaign, “Stand Tall: Live Like Lincoln” will bring the film to 8 U.S. towns named Lincoln, followed in mid-March with screenings at 15 Lincoln high schools across the country in largely underserved communities. Moderated conversations and distribution of Disney’s educational curricula will follow the screenings. In addition to the DVD packets, each of these schools will receive brand new audio-visual equipment—including a 120” portable screen, a Blu-ray and DVD player, a projector and new speakers—to best experience LINCOLN and any future films they screen at their school.

Povenmire Marsh Phineas Ferb

In anticipation of the all-new Phineas and Ferb: Animal Agents—releasing to DVD on February 26, 2013—I had the opportunity to interview the show’s creators and co-executive producers, Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh.

Since it was a phone interview, they began by identifying themselves, so I would know who was speaking when. I told them if they would just speak in character, I’d have no trouble…so they greeted me as Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Major Frances Mongram! That set the tone for the very friendly conversation that follows.

Here’s what the guys had to say about the show in general, the new production, and what’s in the works.

JW: Good afternoon! Thanks for speaking with me today! My kids and my husband and I are all huge Phineas and Ferb fans, and it’s great to have this chance to talk to you. I have read that it took you guys 16 years of pitching the show to various producers before Disney picked it up? Is that so?

P&M: Yeah, it was about 13 years before someone finally took a look at it, and then another couple years of negotiating and working out the details before it actually aired, so yeah, about 15 or 16 years total—1993 to 2008.

JW: How does the current show differ from your original concept? How has the show evolved over the years?

P&M: Our original concept did not take place just during summer vacation. Disney brought that up. We liked it, because we didn’t want to draw all those school desks, so it worked out well and saved us countless animation hours. Also, the character of Isabella was not in the original.

JW: I have to ask, why a platypus? Do they have inherent secret agent qualities?

P&M: Actually yes, sort of! The platypus is like a mishmash of other animals. It’s like they are almost in disguise already. Is it a duck disguised as a beaver or a beaver disguised as a duck?

With the creation of Perry, we have come into what the Shrek creators call “mental real estate.” Before Shrek, people didn’t really have an image in mind to connect to the word “ogre.” But since the success of those films, what comes to mind when you hear that term? The character Shrek! We have kind of achieved the same with Perry. Now when you hear the word “platypus” mentioned, you think of Perry or Agent P, right?

And, we also liked the platypus because no one else had used one before.

JW: You guys each provide voiceovers to key characters (Povenmire: Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Marsh: Major Monogram), but you aren’t involved in much of the script writing anymore, are you?

P&M: We are co-executive producers. Dan is involved in the drawing and animation and the writers’ room; Swampy directs episodes and records the voicing.

JW: Do people recognize you on the street, or does working behind-the-scenes help you lead a “normal” life?

P&M: We blend in pretty well. We can choose to be recognized. Of course, people at things like Comic Con kind of search us out, and now kids recognize us sometimes because of the caveman episode in which we appear in live action. (Dan said he’s been recognized twice recently at the mall.) The weirdest one, though, was when a guy approached us at Bowling for Soup concert in a dark L.A. night club and came up to me and asked if I was Swampy!

JW: Do you write or have you written any of the original songs?

P&M: Yes! We’ve written over 200 original songs, including the theme song.

JW: I am always on the lookout for ways to apply Disney entertainment to homeschool activities. Phineas and Ferb provide lots of options—like un-domesticating squirrels, hosting robot rodeos, and shrinking submarines (all featured on the upcoming DVD)! Of course, many of their projects need to be scaled way down before we could attempt them. Did you intend for the show to be at all educational (if not subliminally)?

P&M: Well, we intended it not to be overtly educational. We wanted it to be about fun and not about teaching lessons. We wanted the characters to be smart and learn in subtle way.

(JW: Just like I say at Magical Mouse Schoolhouse, “Learn while you play!”)

JW: Even Dr. Doof’s “inators” are pretty creative! Who comes up with those crazy projects anyway?

P&M: Writers kind of brainstorm them. They have a whole wall of ideas and just pull ones for Doof/Perry that will intersect well with what Phineas and Ferb/Candace are doing (and vice versa).

JW: Later this month, Disney is releasing Phineas and Ferb: Animal Agents to DVD.  Congratulations, by the way! The episodes featured in the new DVD all focus on the secret-agent-pets side story. It’s fun when the animals collaborate, like in “Where’s Perry? Part 2,” where Perry trains some new recruits to help him tackle evil. Have they all previously aired, or are there any new ones?

P&M: No new. All have aired. We get so much fan mail and excitement over the minor characters who get sparse screen time—the other O.W.C.A. agents—that we wanted give the fans a whole collection of episodes that feature them.

JW: I have to admit, as a parent, when the show first debuted I was skeptical. There are so many shows targeted to kids that portray parents and other adults as complete idiots, but your show doesn’t do that—and I appreciate that! Thank you! Although the parents are a bit out-of-the-know. But what I love about Phineas and Ferb is the clever writing. Honestly, there are times when I’m home alone and I don’t choose an adult show to watch; I choose Phineas and Ferb—and I literally laugh out loud.

P&M: We didn’t feel like anyone would pick up on that! (They thanked me!) We didn’t want any character to be a jerk or idiot. The kids respect their parents. The boys don’t want to do anything Mom wouldn’t like. In fact, they often want Candace to show Mom! They just don’t realize what they’re doing could get them in trouble. We wanted to make a show without anyone being genuinely mean to each other.

JW: So what other Phineas and Ferb things are in the works? What’s coming up?

P&M: A Disney/Marvel Phineas & Ferb crossover episode is currently in production, and is turning out very good! We’re very pleased, and early reviewers seem to like it too! (Didn’t say exactly when, maybe this summer or later this year?)

Another episode like the “Isabella and the Temple of Sap” episode (included on the new DVD) is coming up soon that’s actually two 11-minute, back-to-back stories. The first one will look at what Phineas and Ferb are doing, and the second part will follow Isabella as she does whatever Phineas has asked her to do.

There’s also an episode like that Isabella one that follows minor character “Paul the delivery man” (voiced by actor Christian Slater) through his day and only glimpses what the major characters are up to.

JW: Well, I have to ask before we close, Jeff, where does the nickname “Swampy” come from? Just kinda goes with the last name, or is there a story behind it?

P&M: It is because of my last name. I was living in England many years ago, and friends I worked with started calling me either Boggy or Swampy Marsh just to joke around. I told them Swampy was bad enough, and it just stuck.

And just like that, our time was up! But I was allowed to listen in to the remaining interviews, and I was able to note some more information that fans want to know:

  • How old are Phineas and Ferb? I didn’t get a chance to ask, but in answering someone else’s question, Dan Povenmire said it was like trying to think like a 9-year-old boy, so I’m assuming they’re supposed to be about 9 or 10.
  • What is your favorite episode? Dan: “Summer Belongs to You”; Swampy “Rollercoaster” and “We’re Getting the Band Back Together” (because it was the first episode where Candace and Phineas work together)
  • Aren’t you too young to be making a hit TV show? Actually, we’re a little old to be doing this (laughing!).
  • What are your favorite recurring gags? Giant floating baby head, farmers wife (things fall from the sky), Dr. Doof is unable to recognize Perry without his hat
  • What’s your key to success? Just trying to make each other laugh—and it helps we have an immature sense of humor! We have never taken out a joke because it was too smart for kids or too dumb for adults.

I enjoyed talking to these guys almost as much as I enjoy watching the hit TV show they say they’re too old to be producing! You wouldn’t believe how quickly 15 minutes flies by when you’re having fun with new friends. Did we answer your questions? If not, leave them in the comments below and we’ll work on getting answers!

Disney DIY: Vacation Countdown Craft

Counting down the days to a Disney trip increases the excitement and keeps the anticipation growing right up to the moment of arrival. At our house, if we’re not ticking days off the calendar to our next vacation, we’re reminiscing about the last visit. Today, I’m sharing a Disney DIY that is multifunctional. It keeps the Disney magic alive when you’re away from “home” and it provides a fun way to mark the days till you return.

The wreath itself is the base for this craft. Once it’s done, you can change it up to fit any holiday season, or, as with today’s how-to, set it up to serve a very special purpose.

Disney vacation countdown wreath

You will need:
For the wreath:
1 Styrofoam craft wreath
Several spools of grosgrain ribbon
Scissors
Straight pins

For the countdown:
Wooden placard that fits inside wreath
Chalkboard spray paint
Chalk
Adhesive Velcro
Stickers
Construction paper or poster board
Scotch tape

What to do:
To make wreath:
1) Cut strips of ribbon long enough to wrap around the wreath. I cut mine about 7” each, long enough to wrap at an angle and slightly overlap. I used 5 different ribbons, at 3- or 4-yard spool lengths.
2) Wrap each piece of ribbon in the pattern you desire and secure the ends on the backside of the wreath with straight pins.
3) To create the bow, simply loop ribbon and secure pinched end into Styrofoam with straight pins. Group them closely together in a fluffy bunch. I used about 20 pieces of ribbon for mine.

For placard:
1) Create a 3-circle Mickey stencil. You can use a protractor or trace different size lids, or you may have a Mickey cookie cutter you can use. After you trace the shape, cut it out.
2) I attempted to create a 3-circle chalkboard Mickey by spraypainting black chalkboard paint over a stencil on the placard’s white background, but there was too much bleed under my stencil. It worked out well, though, because when we went back over the whole placard with the black paint, the original stenciled part showed through darker than the surrounding area. We then traced the Mickey with a silver Sharpie so it would stand out. (My son helped!) You may need to tweak this part yourself.
3) Add stickers or embellishments of your choice to the placard and secure it to the wreath with a chenille craft stick. (Our placard had a hanger hole. You may need to punch one yourself or determine a different way to place your placard.)
4) Secure a piece of chalk to your new chalkboard with a small piece of adhesive Velcro. Chalk doesn’t stick very well, so you’ll either need to wrap the Velcro around it and adhere it to itself, or, as I did, wrap a small, unnoticeable rubber band around it to hold it in place. Each day, adjust your countdown number with the chalk in the 3-circle Mickey.
5) For additional fun, I added paper chains to the bottom. Simply cut strips of construction paper or poster board. Shape one into a circle around the wreath and adhere with tape. Loop subsequent links through each other in a similar manner. I used Mickey colors (red, yellow, black, white) and mixed it up by adding some large 3-circle Mickeys. Remove one loop each day.

I hung my wreath with an over-the-door wreath hanger. (It actually says, “Merry Christmas!” but who’s going to notice?) A piece of ribbon makes a pretty hanger too. I say use what you have and be creative!

Now, if only my Disney vacation were really just 12 days away…

Frankenweenie combo pack

The latest feature film from Walt Disney Pictures and Tim Burton Animation, Frankenweenie, was released to
4 Disc Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, Digital and On Demand yesterday, January 8, 2013.

The stop-motion Frankenweenie was an immediate success when it hit theaters last fall as a “plussed” revival of Tim Burton’s 1984 live-action short by the same title. Burton’s original effort featured a young boy named Victor Frankenstein who uses the power of science to bring his beloved, deceased dog Sparky back to life. (You can view a clip here; also included in the Combo Pack.)

I viewed the movie with my kids over the weekend, and I had to agree with the critics: This is one of Burton’s best works. The allusions to classic fright fests are brilliantly done! I’m not a big fan of modern horror flicks, but I get a kick out of the silliness of old scary movies, and I thought Mr. Burton did a wonderful job working in so many references in Frankenweenie. I could clearly see the Hunchback of Notre Dame in the Edward character, Dracula in the cat/bat, Godzilla in Shelley the turtle, Gremlins in the sea monkeys, and of course, traditional Frankenstein in Victor and Sparky and throughout the film.

My teenager was entertained and appreciated all the classic film references too, but my younger two weren’t as impressed. My daughter, who’s nine, did not like the movie at all. She thought the characters looked creepy and it was just too sad that Sparky died twice. My youngest (age seven), however, got a kick out of the whole thing. He didn’t know the old film cues, but he liked it all, even without that frame of reference. He thought it was sad that Sparky died (and laughed that I cried about it!), but it didn’t bother him, because he knew Victor would bring him back to life. All in all, a great film for the whole family!

The Combo Pack includes some cool extras, like the video of Burton’s 1984 clip, an all-new original short, a behind-the-scenes featurette with Tim Burton of how the film was made, a showcase of the film’s touring exhibit, and a “Pet Semetary” music video performed by the Plain White T’s.

Disney Trip Savings Jar

Our family just confirmed our Walt Disney World travel dates for 2013, and we are so excited! The trip is several months away, though, so to help the time pass till we get back “home,” we have Disney crafts planned. The one I’m featuring today is both fun and functional, utilizes found items around the house, and creates a little cushion for the wallet when the trip finally arrives. Our Disney Trip Savings Jar!

Create a Disney Trip Savings Jar
Get the kids involved in this one! Look at the supplies list below. Write each item on a strip of paper and send the kids off on a scavenger hunt to collect them. Have lots of kids? Split them into teams. Have an only? Let him race the clock.

You will need:

  • A container – You probably want something transparent, so you can see the money adding up. Maybe recycle a spaghetti sauce jar & cut a slot in the lid, or use an old vase with a narrow neck (don’t want grabby fingers pulling coins back out). We chose a candy/miscellaneous jar we had with a snugly-sealing lid and a chalkboard strip on one side.
  • A hot glue gun with refills – If you don’t have one, grab some Scotch tape.
  • Decorations – Whatever sparks your creativity! Gather up some ribbon, jingle bells, Disney stickers, buttons, pompoms, chenille sticks, paint, glitter, sculpting clay, dried pasta, pebbles, duct tape, etc.

What to do:

  • Be sure you wash your container before beginning your craft. I know that’s common sense, but sometimes kids just want to get going and don’t check first.
  • Moving on. If you choose a jar and lid, you may want to hot glue the lid onto the jar so it cannot be opened and the funds “borrowed.” Be sure to cut the coin slot before you glue the lid on! Our jar is openable, but more in that in a minute.
  • Get decorating! We chose ribbon with Mickey and Minnie colors. I hot-glued them around the jar’s lid and tied a pretty bow. Then, we strung jingle bells onto a small ribbon, hot-glued them into a Mickey shape, and threaded it through the bow. (Here’s the “more in a minute” part!) This way, IF that jar gets opened, the jingle bells sound an alarm! That way, we can jingle them to celebrate too, whenever we add money to the jar.
  • We added some white buttons to the jar lid in a 3-circle Mickey shape and secured a piece of chalk to the front with adhesive Velcro strips, so we can update the amount as the funds grow. My daughter later added some Mickey and friends stickers and additional jingle bells (lots of alarms will sound now, lol!).
  • Let your imaginations go wild and personalize your savings jar to suit your family’s Disney passion!

Disney Trip Savings Jar

Now that your jar’s ready, empty out your pants pockets and coin pouches, search under sofa cushions and between car seats, raid those piggy banks (ok, let the kids do that themselves!) and clean out the bottom of your purse. Then dump all your loose change—and even surprise dollar bills—into your savings jar. Repeat that process daily, and watch the money add up. Earmark the savings for whatever suits your family’s needs, like paying of the trip or maybe purchasing souvenirs onsite.

Hop over to Couponing to Disney for more saving ideas, like this one I learned from Kristen: if your family was planning to eat out but opts to dine in instead, bank what you would have spent into the Disney Trip Savings Jar.

A trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth, aka Walt Disney World Resort, awesome as it is, can wear even the most seasoned traveler to the bone. Walking miles a day, waiting in crowded lines, eating delicious meals (ok, that’s not really a problem), basically pushing yourself physically, trying to “do it all,” can really fry the nerves and put a damper on an out-of-this-World vacation.

My family has found that if we don’t spend at least one evening in during our trip, we will have one totally Grumpy day where noone’s happy and everyone’s one edge. It actually took us two or three trips to figure the pattern out. We were always trying too hard to take it all in, to do as much Disney stuff as we possibly could without missing a thing that we just kept on going and going and going…and we’d end up regretting that choice.

But now we are older and wiser and more experienced at “Doing Disney.” Once we accepted the fact that we will never be able to see or do all there is to do at Walt Disney World, we were able to relax and enjoy whatever we could get to. And whatever we missed would wait till our return—and we will return.

Spending the evening in at your resort doesn’t have to be boring. You don’t have to go to bed at 7:00 (unless you really want to!). There are plenty of activities to slow the pace that will not only help everyone in your party to relax but will also rejuvenate their Disney spirit.

So, check your game plan, double-check the Park guides, and make sure there’s no place you need to be, and then…

  • Take advantage of the fine eateries onsite. Too often we bypass the fabulous food that’s right around the corner in favor of Park fare, but don’t forget about your resort restaurants. They’re on the Disney Dining Plan!
  • Take a dip in the resort pools. Most resorts have small, “quiet” pools in addition to the large main pools for a more relaxing time away from crowds. All are kept at 80º F yearround.

  • View an outdoor movie viewing and/or play games, dance, and enjoy other activities near the main pool. Ask for a schedule at the concierge.
  • Take a walk, rent a bike, go for a jog, hike a trail, fish from the banks, paddle boat, or ride in a horse-drawn carriage. (Offerings vary by resort.)
  • Color Duffy craft stick from Epcot Kidcot Fun Stops.
  • Visit Downtown Disney
  • Sort pins and/or vinyls and see what you want to trade.
  • Download camera pictures onto your computer; clear the memory stick so it’s ready to capture hundreds more memories.
  • Charge your camera and cell phone batteries.
  • Do laundry.
  • Name the geckos.
  • Pack things you won’t need for remainder of trip.
  • Watch Monday night football. (Or bowl games or whatever’s in season.)
  • Go to bed early.
  • View fireworks from your balcony. (Not viewable from all resorts.)
  • Let your kids play with all the new toys they had to get at World of Disney.
  • Hit the arcades. Prove to your kids what a Galaga hero you were.
  • Decorate your room window/door.
  • Look for hidden Mickeys in the stars 😉

I promise one night away from the Parks will not equal a single moment of magic lost, so take it easy, embrace the down time, and tackle the Parks tomorrow!

Frankenweenie

The latest feature film from Walt Disney Pictures and Tim Burton Animation, Frankenweenie, will be released to 4-Disc Blu-ray™ Combo Pack, Digital and On Demand on January 8, 2013.

The stop-motion Frankenweenie was an immediate success when it hit theaters last month as a “plussed” revival of Tim Burton’s 1984 live-action short by the same title. Burton’s original effort featured a young boy named Victor Frankenstein who uses the power of science to bring his beloved, deceased dog Sparky back to life. (You can view a clip here; also included in the Combo Pack.) With an all-star cast that includes Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short, the 2012 version takes that story line a little farther with its plot twists and quirks, paying homage to classic fright fests like Dracula, Frankenstein, and Gremlins. Critics have called Frankenweenie one of Burton’s best works and recommend it for anyone who is a fan of these films, or is a fan of Tim Burton’s work in general.

The 4-Disc Combo Pack includes an all-new original short, a behind-the-scenes featurette with Tim Burton, a showcase of the film’s touring exhibit, Tim Burton’s live-action short of the same name, and more electrifying content (see below).
